Hacks, Hardware & Emulation, Oh My

Okay, followed this tutorial farther up the thread and it worked even on the most recent FirmWare.

I am now ripping my hundred plus PS3 games and it is making me breath a heavy sigh of relief about my ability to play these games in the future. Do this now if you can.

I just finished intalling a switchless Multi BIOS mod on a Sega CDX and it‘s pretty freakin’ sweet. This mod rocks! I always get apprehensive about putting holes in a case for a physical switch when doing a traditional region mod and this is a really neat solution, with some cool tricks like holding the reset button to switch regions and changing the color of the LCD display.

anyone in the los angeles area know how to or know of someone that can mod a ps1? specifically the older square model if it makes a difference. i had been using a power replay to disc swap for the longest time and it stopped booting into it. dunno if the serial port or the power replay went bad. i wanna get at that mizzurna falls translation!

@seasons#24586 I am in the Los Angeles area and in 2019 I installed over 5 PSIO switchboards for my friends in OC! I wouldn‘t be offering to help if you needed something that annoys me like a Game Gear recap, but of all things, Ps1 mod installation is something I’m super comfortable with and would be happy to take care of for you!

also @milo OKAY now that I've seen your twitter, I need to DM you to talk about burning ICs

@treefroggy#24590 tighttt, i'll move this over to DMs once i figure out how

ALSO the new OPL 1.0 has been released

I must have had one of those "good" Gamestar adapters

I got a question about arcade emulation. How do people use mame? There are so many options, front ends, ect. It's always been overwhelming to me.

pretty sure Wint is actually @Moon

@hellomrkearns#25021

Depends on what sort of setup you want.

My ideal MAME setup is a small, dedicated PC loaded into a custom built cabinet (you can get pre cut kits on ebay that you just put together). You can set it up with Retroarch or similar software that frontends MAME. Then get yourself some buttons, joysticks and some USB arcade adapters, a decent sized LCD screen and speakers and you're golden.

@hellomrkearns#25021 i just use the version built into fightcade regardless of if i‘m playing online or not. despite the name, it’s not just for fighting games. under the hood, it uses final burn neo which is built off mame. i haven't had any issues with it.

on the topic of mame, the video game history foundation just put out a pod with one of the main contributors. they talk about a lot of cool stuff!

Don't know if people have been paying too much attention to the Vita scene lately, but the homebrew scene has been going nuts lately with porting games that never got official releases. GTA 3, SA, VC, and Chinatown Wars. Max Payne. All those got ports using their Android versions with some magic to replace calls to Android functions with calls to Vita functions. Game Maker Studio games have also been getting ported now all of a sudden. A bunch of free itch.io stuff got Vita versions recently and the guy who did those has now also ported over Minit (requiring the steam files, thankfully). It rocks to see a console that never really got a fair shake have an afterlife like this.

@donrumata#25319 I did not know about Minit for Vita! Link pleaseeee.

@donrumata#25319 I knew about the big ones like GTA but didn't know about the itch games! Would love to check some of that out.

@robinhoodie#25322 @sabertoothalex#25323

This guy has been doing a lot of those ports, Minit included. VitaDB is a good place to follow for these too, because most of the tooling they're using is publicly available so a lot of stuff is getting worked on at any given time.

Big news for unlocking your PS2, especially the Slim model

@Syzygy#25572 Yeah ESR made playing PS2 back ups pretty easy a decade ago. I think the big addition for me is being able to play PS1 back ups with no hassle. Even just being able to do the mod once for people and have them pop in and old PS1 back up they might want to play and have it boot up would be nice. Lot of friends have PS2s still kicking around under their HD tvs. Let them get that hit of FF7 nostalgia.

@Syzygy#25572

If I understand this correctly this mod does seem to enable you to region unlock your console for both PS1 and PS2 games which is pretty big news. Historically that hasn’t been possible without a modchip and it’s nice to be able to get around that without relying on those still being manufactured.
