Hacks, Hardware & Emulation, Oh My

@treefroggy#25619 you’ve triggered a memory. I haven’t thought about my cut up credit card disc swap tool in years. Lol

I need an SNES flash cart. Are Everdrive ones worth the price?

@fetus8#25629 It looks like the X-6 is up for sale now and not a bad choice if you want to save money. But I‘ve had the FXPak Pro model for years and its pretty amazing what it adds. Play Alpha 2 with no load time and arranged MSU-1 music. It’d s bizarre feeling of playing a sort of SNES CD.

@fetus8#25629 It depends on how much you want to spend. I love my SD2SNES and I was very okay with paying full price back in 2016 or so for one. I think the second best one is the everdrive now? I'm not totally certain but it may now be the case that the only step down from the top of the line is you will not have MSU-1 CD audio or Super Gameboy integration. If the second best cart plays all custom chip games like FX and the chips Kirby 3 uses, go for it.

@robinhoodie#25632 the FXPRO in green translucent was enough to convince me to just go for it. It will be perfect with my new Super NT. Thanks everyone.

Circumstances have changed and I‘m all of a sudden in the market for a CRT(13/14in, so, p small). I have all the pieces to set up a PS2 on the way so that’ll be the primary use for it with maybe a Dreamcast and Gamecube down the line.

I guess my question is, at that small size, what should I be looking for? I did a little research and people are all about a couple particular Toshiba and Sony models(14AF45 and KV-13FS100 respectively) but those seem to be in the tier of scalpers asking $200 for them because they know that people value them. The selling point seems to be that they're some of the only smaller CRTs that have component inputs. Most of what I'm seeing in my area for that small are TVs that only have the white and yellow AV inputs. I did find one smaller Toshiba for super cheap that looks great with the full yellow, white, red input line-up. Is there much of a difference though? I'm not really in a rush and am planning to hit up some garage sales and thrift stores but kinda just want to get an idea of what is and isn't good for 6th gen games.

@sabertoothalex#25757 i have one of those tvs that just have the white and yellow inputs. since i live alone and have no friends i pretty much always use headphones. right now i’m plugging directly into the tv, which obviously only outputs mono, but i keep contemplating buying a rca to headphone adapter so that i can get stereo. they’re not expensive, so i guess i’ll just order one today. if you’re also a headphone person, that might be a good option so that you can broaden the range of tvs you’re in the market for. but it sounds like that toshiba might be fine if you go for just rca av inputs.

SO I have a hacked 3DS mostly just to use emulators for like, NES, SNES, GB, GBA etc. Really mostly the handhelds since I USUALLY play the console games on my hacked Wii.

Would a DS flash cart let me play ds roms on there? I have less interest in playing 3ds roms cause i have carts for most of the games i really want on there, but also would be slightly interested maybe if that's easy as well.

@rainbowbattlekid#26171 A DS flashcart would work but a free and super compatible way to do the same thing is just to get TWiLight Menu++ which, if I understand it correctly, just uses the 3DS's built in DS functionality to play the games.

@sabertoothalex#26199 Ah thanks I'll look into that.

I've seen some conflicting info, anyone know what size micro sd card i can use in my new 3ds xl? figured i may as well buy a new one since i think mine is like 8gb, plus i need to order a screwdriver for it anyways

@rainbowbattlekid#26213 I have a 128GB card in mine and it works perfectly fine, I think I‘ve seen people say that even up to 256 should work, though that’s an absurdly large card for 3DS stuff. I have a ton on mine and it still has something like 50GB left on it.

One thing to keep in mind with the bigger cards is that some GBA injects have a weird issue where the [screen wraps around](https://gbatemp.net/threads/how-do-i-fix-this-gba-cia-screen-crunch.458161/). There's conflicting info out there about what causes it but it's a big card exclusive thing. Formatting your card with different cluster sizes(32 or 64) can fix it. Or playing them in original res. Some more info on that [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/3dspiracy/comments/ad74y7/when_injecting_gba_vc_games_what_method_is_best/edf0l26/).

Component is overkill on smaller consumer crts. Svideo is pretty close and looks super good. Even composite look really good! But for future proofing svideo is really good to have because there is no good solution for converting digital to composite like from Mister and retro consoles. My friend got a bunch of digital to composite converters from one build specifically for Mister to pro equipment like Extron and they all look bad. Digital to svideo is super good.

I also have composite 13 inch Sony with just yellow and white inputs, which looks fantastic. I route red/white audio using female adapter plugs --> red/white to audio jack --> little headphone amp (you need amp to adjust volume) --> headphone

Or you could connect regular RCA cable and plug into speakers, receivers, or boombox like this beauty I just dug up. Also great for driving your headphone this way.

Man I have no room in my life to do the whole CRT thing. Wish there were good filters or something on the snes/nes/genesis emulators on the wii at least, but I feel like nothing really gets the vibe right.

@KennyL#26252 what do you use to convert the mister signal to s-video? i ended up ordering one of these which hasn‘t gotten here yet, but curious what you’ve had success with.

@seasons#26259 That's what my friend got. He said svideo looks super good on that, sharper than stock genesis composite, which is super clean!

He also got vga to svideo/composite adapter from linuxbot3000 on ebay. Their stuff is really good and go out of stock pretty fast (currently out of stock). I'd buy that if I had crt with svideo because it can be used with other devices besides mister. Again, super good svideo, ok composite. Not able to find good composite solution for my mister is pretty frustrating heh......

@seasons#26259 I ordered this converter which is supposedly on its way to me, but really interested to see how the one you ordered turns out. Just being able to send the MiSTER to even the most crusty of grandma TVs soothe something in the apocalypse thinking side of my brain.

@KennyL is doing it right

I softmodded my Wii and tried couple of PCE 240p hacked virtual console games suggested by @robinhoodie. They look great on my composite Sony crt! But screen position is off and there is no option to adjust. There are pretty much no options for anything in VC. I tried Ys which is not part of those 240p hacks and its aspect ratio is pretty off. Stretched too wide so sides are cutoff further beyond overscan boundary.

Also tried that infamous Sonic waterfall and VC version is not good...

Whereas standalone emulator Genesis Plus GX looks great!

Sooo... I'm gonna stick with standalone emulators for Wii.

Overall, Wii is fantastic for crt with composite only. I'd suggest modding Wii instead of getting Mister for people with composite only crt tv because there is no good composite options for Mister right now. Wii U is even better option because like PS3, it has both analogue and digital AV outputs but also goes portable with gamepad.

@KennyL#26399 My only knock against the Wii U is it can only go as low as 480i and not all the way down to 240p. I haven't fully tested to see the difference, but worth considering.

And yeah, I feel like the VC pales in comparison to the emulator options. But I certainly get why someone would not want to futz with the endless menus of Retroarch. Having LESS menus certainly sold me on MiSTER

@robinhoodie#26276 heck yeah. i saw that mavster and woulda went for it had it been in stock just cause it was cheaper heh. i‘ll keep y’all posted on the one i ordered when it gets here.
