I just nabbed a GC Loader, which is a cool way to modify the Gamecube. Basically you replace the disc drive with an SD Card reader that pretends to be a disc drive. It's neat!
Notably this makes it really easy to launch homebrew. The thing I'm mostly interested in (besides just booting raw ISOs, which is nice) is a homebrew program called Gameboy Interface. There's an add-on for the Gamecube (the Game Boy Player) that lets you slap a Game Boy/Game Boy Color/Game Boy Advance into the bottom and play it on your screen. To use this you need to have the Game Boy Player disc in, but if you have homebrew you can skip the disc! You can also do a million other things, like:
* Reduce lag
* Dump ROMs of the carts you put into the Game Boy Player to an SD card
* Play back Tool Assisted Speedruns
* Make the graphics crisper
Among many other things. Gamecube homebrew, actually pretty cool!
@TheFragranceOfDarkCoffee#26420 Gamecube homebrew is far between and rom hacks are also rare. But I was able to play Super Mario Sunburn directly through this and it was very cool. There‘s also patch to let you directly boot to F-Zero AX. I’m hoping there's even more in the future.
@robinhoodie#26407 Ah good to know about Wii U! Guess I unknowingly made the right decision for myself by going with Wii. Retroarch is definitely way too fussy for its own good sometimes. Genesis Plus core inside Retroarch is not the best because you can't set the correct resolution. Getting shimmers and what not compared to straight standalone Genesis Plus.
So i'm running emulators on my wii > hdmi adapter> receiver> projector
there's no way I get that sonic waterfall lookin right, right? like in addition to the source, the screen has to be crt, or at least able to imitate one?
i only have nintendo emulators on there at the moment, so i haven't tried sega stuff yet
like, i'd love to be able to at least have the OPTION fo the crt look with my current setup, but the convenience of my setup i think might be worth the slight tradeoff there, i dunno.
a modded wii
ps2 slim
hopefully-soon-to-be-modded ps3 slim
is there any way i can get Saturn and/or Dreamcast emulators workin on any of those? feel like i have basically every other old system i want available but not those.
EDIT: I was gonna say I wanna play Jet Grind Radio but apparently it was ported to PS3?? How did I not know about that? does anyone have a list of what saturn/dreamcast games are available easily as ports on other systems??
@rainbowbattlekid#26492 Saturn exclusives, especially the Sega made stuff you're going to be hard pressed for ports. Their arcade stuff and the Treasure games are well represented on Xbox 360 though. A lot of the Dreamcast stuff because of timing got ported to the other concurrent systems or again to PS3 / 360. Better in that instance to research things that are still only on Dreamcast.
And yeah emulator wise for those two systems, a PC is the way to go for now. Or an Xbox One Series X
@TheFragranceOfDarkCoffee#26420 I assume if I was interested in playing some of those $200 GC games like Chibi-Robo that there's no reason to not just mod a Wii instead of modding a GC with this? Besides just like….wanting GC hardware, which is understandable!
@Syzygy#26568 for awhile Nintendont couldn’t emulate the Wii Broadband adapter but even that has been solved. GB player is the main draw but also with like the Carby you can get a clear HDMI video Signal. My set up now is GC for FB player and GC games. Wii U for Wii games. Wii for emulators Wiiware.
@Syzygy#26591 The bigger one for me is you can play Double Dash LAN play via this set up. Though it barely works over wifi, it really needs a USB to ethernet adapter connected to the back of your Wii.
I mostly started down the GCLoader rabbit hole because I‘m using the Game Boy Player to speedrun, and booting homebrew for that seemed like a good stopgap until the Analogue Pocket actually came out. Plus, I have an obscure ROM I’d like to grab to test out, again for speedrunning, and as far as I know Gamecube homebrew is the easiest way to dump carts.
@TheFragranceOfDarkCoffee#26661 just playing GB games on there with an NES controller via an adapter made the whole thing worth it. Like perfect GB on tv experience. And then I can just pop the cart out and continue playing on the go.
Especially for my gamecube, I am not interested in replacing the disc drive. I‘ve been using the action replay SD loader boot disc to run Swiss and Gameboy Interface for years now, and yes, it is the easiest way to dump all gameboy carts. I love it, I have used it a lot for myself and others. Usually I’m using it to back up, hack, and transfer Pokemon save games for myself and others, or put a save from my everdrive onto an actual cart. But I've also used it to take screencaps of my gameboy camera photos. I love my gamecube so much. I installed a region switch as well, and the same SD card adapter I use for homebrew works with the officially supported screenshot feature introduced in Doubutsu no Mori E+ ! ^______^
( I can also help anyone trying to use Nintendon't on Wii, I'm very familiar. Been hacking Wiis since 2009! )
In fact, Wii hacking was **my bread and butter, main source of income from 2016-2018**, because I found several sources where I could get them for $5-$15 consistently and in large enough supply, spend 10 minutes a piece hacking them with 4GB SD cards I bought in bulk, then sell them on ebay for a clean $65 shipped all day in a $6 flat rate USPS mailer! Those were the days!
@treefroggy#26702 I gave away a LOT of pre-modded Wiis for sure. Mostly salvaged, with salvaged HDD filled with my ripped collection. The other main reason I put the GC loader in my 6 Cubes is so that I can loan them out without worry. I mean I basically sold me entire GC collection to do this as I was weird to have these super precious discs around. Also 4 GCs which can go right into GBI makes it easier to get 4 player link of GBA games going. I think that has always been my prime goal. 4 player, 4 screen F-zero Climax. God. If only the F-zero AX hidden inside GX worked with the Broadband Adapter.
@robinhoodie#26704 Ah yeah that‘s dope. Since ideally I would only have 1 of each console in my van, I have my main unit pimped out. But yeah that’s what I love about the Wii, you can easily have a lightweight unit with solid state storage, totally shock proof for throwing around! With no gameboy player on the bottom, a solid state gamecube is also quite an extraordinary device. And yeah, the inflation of Gamecube games excites me. I sold all of my US copies aside for my original melee and Animal Crossing, the rest are all Japanese versions I like for the art and small cases. I got Cubivore for $12 at electronics boutique in the early 00's and sold that original copy for 100 times that amount recently. :j
Also yeah I never thought of a 4-player F-zero GBA session all on CRTs, that is boss and sounds like something I'd do at my friend's house in OC. I've said it here before but once at my friend's Bday party it was late and I was drunk and I come into the living room and dude has Mega Man Battle Network on the 60" 4k monitor upscaled, and Boktai 2 on a PVM on the floor, and they were connected doing the crossover missions that I had never heard of and my inebriated mind was blown to smithereens.
They were still working on getting 4 sets of component cables las tI heard before covid, but I think one time they did do 4 Swords Adventures, with main screen on the 60" and 4 gameboys on CRTs, even though that's super cool and worth doing at least once, I think having something like 4 Swords adventures on the gameboy screen is more appropriate lol. I have made a couple sets of custom spliced Gameboy Micro to gamecube link cables, since nintendo never made those, even though the pinout is the same for the micro link cable, so it's super simple to make one using OEM cables. But yeah, there's so many possibilities for Gameboy Advance on CRTs in what would essentially be a full video wall :j , only thing holding back most people is getting those component cables, but s-video and composite would still be impressive as heck given you are using GBI!
What are some other GBA games that would be cool to have a 4 player 4 CRT setup on, besides the obvious racing games? Mario Party Advance? LOL
@treefroggy#26711 Sonic Advance, though that is also racing, same with Mario Kart. Mario Tennis would be fun though pretty extra. Same with Doom and Doom 2. The one that is up there with 4 Swords are the 2 Kirby games, especially Amazing Mirror as you all can just go where ever you like in the game and then run into each other on the huge map. I also built the set up as a way to play an on TV version of 2 player Gameboy Tetris since that is one of the most accessible games of all time.
And yeah I have all the stuff needed to do 5 screen 4 Swords, 5 Screen Crystal Chronicles, and my personal would build and entire handmade home cabinet around 2 screen Pac Man VS. Though there is less need for that now thanks to the Switch Namco Museum.
Well I was gonna be all excited and come in here and post about my new CRT and the PS2 I set up but USPS didn’t properly deliver the PS2, HDD, and adapter so it got swiped from our building’s porch(The Oakland Special) so my joy will have to wait.
I am excited to eventually get it all together still
off the bat I will say... the FMCB card does NOT work with my 30001 PS2. It works with my slim model, but for some reason not my phatty, which is a problem coz obviously I want to use that one for the hard drive loader.
so... I'm in the market for another PS2. I went to the local goodwill today that often has $20 units but they had none at the moment... this sunday I'll probably stop by a local games shop, but if they do have a console I imagine I'll be paying a lot more than $20 >_<
my decision to learn about this stuff is coz I think I've officially been outpriced of gaming collecting, with the price of Chulip suddenly rising to a level that makes me regret the recent opportunities I had to buy it for as "cheap" as $125 :(
@p3ters#27179 You can use the FMCB on the slim to write to another card (though Ulaunch elf) and hopefully have it be more compatible with you 30001 model. Here is the installer that you can put on a USB stick. There is if I remember correctly an option to pick the model you are trying to instal for. Also careful with that harddrive adapter. It might be the source of some issues when it comes to Open Ps2 Loader. But please report back on your experience.
