Here we are again: the thread where we discuss the games we are playing in 2024

As a giant fan of MOBAs I’ve had Deadlock on my radar, but I’m hugely disappointed to hear there’s a last hitting mechanic. Just hearing that might be enough to keep me from ever checking it out. Last hitting is an uninteresting and tedious relic left over from Warcraft III, that needs to go away.

Sorry for the mini rant.

I doubt this will win you over but it’s implemented in such a way that the minions explode over time when they’re about to die, so it’s not as precise, I doubt the mechanism is the issue though.

It at least sounds like less of a chore, but the presence of the mechanic period is annoying to me. No one particularly enjoys last hitting and all it does is distract/take away from more compelling things like lane match ups, team fighting and map macro.

i don’t disagree but League has beaten it into me.

I love the art direction and character designs in this — Not sure if I’ll play it, but excited to see it in its fully polished state.

I don’t have a strong opinion on last hitting other than I’m bad at it. However it seems a lot easier in deadlock? Minions glow when they are ready to be last hit and I feel like there is some leeway when they get killed by your minions to still get the last hit in. What I find really cool/fun is being able to steal farm from the enemy in lane with the little ghosties that pop up after killing a minion. The sound design for getting farm stolen is brutal tho I always feel so bad.

Yeah, the art is super pretty, and it being New York feels pretty apt.

In terms of CSing, I love that they solved denying, in Dota denying mental stacks you so fast but I can shoot a little orb.

I broke down and bought the DS Castlevania collection. It was a disservice to put those games on such a small screen originally. They’re surprisingly detailed and look good on a large screen.

The DS games are easily my favourites in the entire series. They are so full-packed with stuff and extra modes that it’s almost silly. Enjoy yourself!

I am curious how they changed the touch screen functions for Dawn of Sorrow.

So far it looks like you can draw on the Switch touchscreen, or hold a button and use the stick? It works pretty smoothly.

And can I just say? Haunted Castle Revisited is GORGEOUS.

I’m still wading through the swamp that is Red Dead Redemption 2. It’s just such a weird, messy, overcooked video game that I can’t put down. The morality and politics of the game are also very intriguing, and I don’t remember a vocal outcry of this game being “woke” when it came out.

Not saying that the moral message and politics in this game are “good” but they are interesting, albeit clumsy and stumbling.

It’s been a tough couple of weeks and I’ve made a habit of drinking tea while playing Bauldr’s Gate 3. I really like it so far. I’m completely new to the genre so again I’m not sure what this game does that has/hasn’t done before, but overall I’m very impressed.

I’ve been so engaged that I forget to drink, finishing the session with about a third of the mug still full – a good sign but a sad waste of Oolong tea. Still, I’ve been able to clear my head for a couple of hours at night which is what I wanted.

I noticed that I spend a portion of my time with the game wondering if I broke a storyline or if I’m doing something in the incorrect order. I’ve already come across one thing that felt like I accidentally skipped but that the game accounted for sort of awkwardly. That and I think that the fast travel is almost too generous. I can get into particulars but to those who haven’t played the game it would read like gibberish.

I bring that up because those moments seem to interrupt my enjoyment of the game. It’s like driving a nice car but every few minutes checking if the wheels are still on.

I also thought the turn based combat was going to be incomprehensible but so far it’s one of the strongest aspects of the game for me. It reminds me of how it felt to play Into the Breach. Staring at the chessboard for a while and trying to come up with strategies that ultimately work is very fun, something I wasn’t expecting to like with this game.

Ash Parrish said in her beginner’s guide that she wished that there was a “restart at the beginning of an encounter” button and I kind of agree. It’s something that can only be partially ameliorated by saving your game A LOT. Which is fine, just a bit cumbersome.

Tales of:

I know very little about this series and this is a sincere question: are there common design elements shared among the “-ia” games which are not present in the ones named after common nouns or abstract concepts, and vice versa? Do some fans have more interest in one over the other? Does the team know there is an even number of each of them/is that intentional? (not counting direct sequels)

(All I know is “Berseria” was supposed to evoke the word “berserk.”)

It’s interests me that you’re picking up on things like this while new to the genre. I had similar observations about the game as a cRPG vet that didn’t seem so noticeable to folks not as versed in them

I spent a lot of time with this one analyzing how it was put together as a result, and honestly, I’d recommend against that, but I also know from experience how difficult it can be to turn off that part of one’s brain

I am really enjoying deadlock’s take on last hitting. Every last hit gives off an orb that can be contested by the enemy. First one to shoot it gets the gold (if it expires it goes to who scored the last hit). Also if you melee the creeps then you automatically capture the orbs, which interacts in a fun way with the parry mechanic that is available to every hero. Adds a lot of interactivity to the otherwise lame mechanic.

That doesn’t sound too bad, I’ll have to give it a shot. Reminds me of how in Pokemon Unite the creeps were all neutral units(like the jungle in other MOBAs) to be fought over and sniped, which made the mechanic a bit more interesting.

I’ve hated every other MOBA I’ve tried but this one clicked a lot more. Turns out the moment to moment gameplay of shooting things excites my monkey brain.

That being said, I haven’t touched it since I first tried it so I dunno if I’ll be coming back to it much

My family from Maine so mudrooms abound! My dad and I both live in vans in california but we call the entryway of our vans the mudroom lol

Did anyone else grow up calling a “Mudroom” a “Foyer” (pronounced “foy-yay”) or were we just putting on airs and trying to be fancy?
