@“treefroggy”#p146702 please I'm begging you
@“mtvcribs”#p146705 I love kings field maybe more than I should, but I gotta admit there’s only so much of dark & ugly I can take
@“treefroggy”#p146707 it‘s a lot more colorful than KF.
I would even possibly say it’s…delightful?
But also, if you‘ve just played a lot similar games, maybe it is best to wait a bit so you’re able to fully appreciate it for what it is.
@“mtvcribs”#p146711 yep. just waiting for inspiration to strike and go on an FS binge again… until then Mega Man Legends 1/2 is the joyous and colorful borderline king's field clone I crave
@mtvcribs is correct Eternal Ring is a different vibe than King's Field. It's bright-mysterious vs KF bleak-mysterious
I‘ve played Eternal ring enough to know. Still after how much I’ve played of KF1-4, it‘s daunting idk just gotta be in the mood. I’m lucky Mega Man Legends even snapped me out of a weird lul I was in where no games felt like anything but a waste of time. none of this is a problem. I just approach my commitment to games from a completely emotional standpoint.

MML2: better at doing a lot of the same things that Vagrant Story did very well
{“sticky”:true}
It‘s taken me over 2 years but this year for sure I’ll finish Persona 5 Royal
I played like 12 hours of games in the last 7 months so decided I might play some games for real this year. I downloaded that abandonware Outrun 2006 and got it running and had some fun yesterday. The resolution was awful so I bumped it up to normal, and at first I thought it didn't change because the menus still looked horrible, but then when the level started it was high resolution. Weird thing going on there. Fun game.
After too many attempts to count, I finally conqureed Ornstein and Smough in Dark Souls Remastered. Immediately leveled my health lol. Only took a few tries, first since before Christmas, but overall the hardest I've been stuck on a From boss in awhile. More than anyone in Bloodborne for sure. Going to do some Estus leveling and then go after the final few bosses.
Last year I completed 12 games and I am hoping to double that this year. I have a running list of ~50 games that I would like to get to this year so hoping to clear Dark Souls soon and make some progress on that front. I'm trying something new and breaking my year into four "semesters" so hoping to knock out one major long game per and sprinkle in some short games along with them. Thinking SNES Mario RPG next but not set on it. May put a poll up for selection assistance over the weekend...
I am finally getting around to checking out Cave Story and found myself still playing a hour after booting it up just to see if it worked. So, I'm excited.
@“cass”#p146662 Game OWNS, dude. Don‘t know how far you’ve gotten, but I realized that it‘s very easy to get waaay to deep before you’re ready to be in an area.
And I say, dive too deep. The game can go from chilled out fun time to OHSHITOHSHITOHSHIT, WHADDISTHA?!?!? AAAAAAAAHHHGGG on a dime and it's great.
I‘m playing through FF7 for the first time (on my series x plugged into a crt, lol). it’s so much more playful and weird than I was led to believe. lots of really unique storytelling tricks. insane main cast (what is a cait sith. what is his deal). I am also…not really engaging with the battle system at all w/ the 3x speed, infinite limit break, and turn off random encounters options. my loss I guess, but I know for a fact that I would not be able to finish it without the cheese
On new year‘s day I 1CC’d the original arcade Kiki Kaikai for the first time. But it won't be the last!!
Last night I enjoyed the absolute whiplash of playing Doom 64 and then Sonic Advance 2 in bed with headphones on while being pretty goodly high. Just oscillating between hypnotic dread and absolute euphoria with eyes equally wide:

Playing Doom 64 on the tiny screen of a handheld emulation device also really lends those late-era pre-rendered spites an uncannily smooth Silicon Graphics look that sort of enhances its strangeness -- I think the forum might blow the image up a bit, but something like this:

And I know we have a Sonic thread but like they say on the podcast, who cares. Saying right here that the Dimps Sonic games are great. Breezed through the primordial Dimps joint, Sonic the Hedgehog for Neo Geo Pocket Color, this week and it avoids the pitfalls that I believe are what typically make people think Sonic is "bad," at least in my observation in really sitting with Sonics 1, 2, 3 and CD last year (and Frontiers in late '22): poor signposting in levels/bosses that halts momentum -- often related to a stage gadget, stuff that makes you say "how am I supposed to move forward?," or friction from confusion rather than friction from skill. Sonic Neo Geo feels a little "greatest hitsy" and straightforward, but it does avoid that communication problem. Advance avoids it to a lesser extent, but has more style, more Amy, more Chaos and is still pretty smooth sailing, relative to stuff like Sonic 3 or CD (shame about that GBA audio, though). As of Zone 4 in Advance 2, it's the smoothest Sonic experience I've had since Sonic 2, and if it holds up like this, it'll be total Sonic 2s domination for me, Big Double Sonics, Sonic Deuces Supreme
With Infinite Wealth and Persona 3 Reload both rapidly approaching I‘ve been spending my time with some shorter indies to try and have some solid variety in my life before I’m in JRPG world for a few months.
8-Colors Star Guardian was my first game completion of the year. It ended being more of a puzzle game than an RPG which was unexpected but a welcome surprise. It has a lot of heart and some humorous Sailor Moon-esque dialogue that I had a lot of fun with. Only took me roughly 3 hours to get through the whole game.

The next game that I'm currently digging into is Gato Roboto which I've had in my library for awhile. Very charming presentation and the movement feels great. I'm really enjoying how the game compartmentalizes the difficulty into the boss encounters while the exploration is very leisurely and loose though I expect this may change later in the game.

im playing beacon pines right now and enjoying it!
I especially like how chibi all the characters look in the overworld

its cool how the mystery unravels - viewing similar events from different angles
but, even with all the clarity you gain as a detached observer, you are still tied to the perspective of a child who could only gather or even understand so much information... the true happenings of beacon pines remain an enigma even once youve reach the end of every path
My brother got me Super Mario Wonder for Christmas, so I played that in small sessions over the course of a few days. Mostly, I just like being able to play as Peach without any hand-holdy changes to the original control scheme.
After a few days though, I really wanted to dive back into Mario Maker 2 for whatever reason — maybe the level of difficulty? Chaos of design choices? I don't know. But I've been playing that again for a few hours in the evenings over the past week and loving it. They might be onto something with this mario guy...
If anyone here got into the design side of MM2, send me some codes please!
