I’m doing the thing where you finally watch the thing people have been telling you you’d like for years, and then you have to admit that it’s good. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Just a good ass time. My only complaint is that the main character tends to downplay the genocide his people inflicted. The serial killer character who only kills people who participated in the genocide of his people is the victim in this story and I will not be dissuaded.
This one has been sitting in my drive for a while now. I wasn’t planning on watching because i guessed it was Fan service: the anime. Now i’ll give it a shot!
Did you ever watch the 2003 version? Something made me revisit a scene from it the other day and I just decided to watch the whole episode. I’m thinking I need to do a re-watch.
I recommend, if possible, to watch the OG FMA. He first episodes of Brotherhood are essentially a summary of around half the OG episode, and in my opinion you miss a lot if you don’t give the OG a chance. Sadly it goess off path by the end, since the manga wasn’t complete,so you could skip that part.
I think the direction FMA03 goes toward the end is interesting and the show maintains its more thoughtful tone throughout. Do not skip (and watch the weird movie too).
Brotherhood being more faithful to the manga doesn’t automatically make it the better show. For one, its slapstick moments are overwhelming and for another, like you said, it makes a beeline for the part where the original diverges and so skips a lot of detail in its first 13-ish episodes.
@2501 are you around?
Well I was told to skip 03!! I have seen a bit of it here and there but never watched it. I knew about a lot of the spoilers in the first 12 or so episodes so I definitely felt the rush. That part of Brotherhood has easily been the worst part of the show for me, so watching season one of 03 instead probably would’ve helped. The milk is spilt now though and the next 35~ episodes have been much better.
If you’re set on finishing Brotherhood then go for it. It’s still FMA. It’s still Bones. But I implore you to give 2003 a chance afterward. Ignore anyone parroting what they read on reddit or /a/ telling you to skip it.
Noted! Probably won’t get to it right away but down the road I’ll give it a go for sure. I’ve only got like 15 episodes left of Brotherhood so I’ll finish that up soon and some day check out 03.
FMA03 has an ED that has lived in my head for twenty years
Started watching Dungeon Meshi and it makes me hungry
Anyone watching Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede destruction? Curious particularly of non-manga readers opinions.
I haven’t because I’ve read the manga - I am also curious about non-manga-readers’ opinions. I am guessing the anime will not work for me because of fake young people voices and fake raspy monster voices, but curious how others have fared with it.
Having read the manga all the way thru, and watched the first few episodes, I can tell you the voices are absolutely as described.
It starts at an interesting place id be curious to know your thoughts on. Something also to flag is the subtitles are the dub script which is annoying as someone who speaks a little Japanese.
Nuisances caveated - nothing has made me angry and I’ll prob see it through.
I didn’t read the manga, i didn’t even knew there was a manga.
My problem is that i watched “ep 0”, and after watching the regular episodes i’m really confused of what is the timeline, what time are we on the series and what is really going on. Maybe i missed some details, so i’m hoping it will get clear as the series progresses. I will probably finish it out of curiosity.
This is what I was most curious to hear, the manga decidedly does not start there - at risk of spoilers I won’t say much more. I dont think it needed to start there? Like at all?
Based on seeing it talked about here I continued on watching Dead Dead Demon’s Dedede Destruction last night, and I’m super happy I continued on with it after almost ditching after I watched ep0. It turns out the rest of the series is extremely different in tone from ep0, and it might end up being one of my all time favourites. It’s got a bunch of bits to it that are all things I enjoy in anime and media in general, but slotted together in a way that it turns out causes my brain to vibrate in the best possible way.
My advice, if anyone wants it, is to wait and watch episode 0 later on, since it takes place chronologically after the rest of the series. It’s extremely violent in a very up-front way, which is fine and all, and I’m sure there were Reasons to place that episode at the beginning (?), but it also throws the viewer into the deep end of the plot, which just didn’t work for me. I almost stopped watching it because of this, and I’m glad I didn’t.
Something else to note that’s irritating: unlike a bunch of modern anime subbing, this one doesn’t caption most text that appears on-screen, even extremely important things that tell you when a scene is taking place chronologically. I was able to infer a lot by having some kanji recognition and by context, but this is a kind of basic stuff that I’m surprised they didn’t bother with, especially with a show like this that isn’t exactly perfectly straightforward.
Gunsmith Cats is so good!
