I just got a gaming PC, what did I miss? (aka cool games of years past)

Samurai Gunn 2 hasn’t come out for anything besides Steam (so far) and it looks fun

Let’s just say 2024 has been bountiful in terms of goty-worthy games and leave it at that

Some of my favorite games of the last decade on PC include

  • Pentiment. Someone else mentioned it, but it’s a period-pretty-accurate mystery adventure set in 16th century Germany. Very good at creating an atmosphere.
  • Vampire Survivors. Brief iterable game (30 minute rounds, lots of unlocks) that I imagine would work well in handheld. It takes a few runs, but you too can feel like a god of death.
  • Space Rangers HD: A War Apart. So I have a thing for huge open-ended space games where you can be a trader, a fighter, a pirate, or something else. Elite Dangerous and the flight sims that do this are technically impressive. But I love this game. You have five main species, three Dominator species trying to wipe them out, pirates flying about, and all of this unfolds on 2D star system maps with 1 turn equalling 1 day of progress. Then they pack in a bunch of mini games you can engage with or skip, many of them on the level of wonky adventure games or word problems, along with an RTS game that I actually enjoy.
  • 80 Days. Simple, charming writing for an 80 day journey around the world. Good Jules Verne homage.

some very good recs already. The Beginner’s Guide was also the first that came to mind for me as a quintessential PC indie game. The Stanley Parable from the same guy is also good. it started as a Half Life mod, just like Portal, Counter Strike and Dear Esther.

games like Her Story, Unpacking, The Forgotten City or Papers, Please have ports elsewhere but they feel at home on PC.

Thirty Flights of Loving, Starseed Pilgrim, Octodad: Dadliest Catch, Anodyne, Receiver, The Yawhg, Eversion, Antichamber, Nidhogg and Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy are quirky PC games that had their moment and are still worth playing. actually you don’t really need a Gaming PC for any of these, any modern PC will do.

This thread rules because every post reminds me of something really cool that I forgot about.

Indika is worth a play, but Nine Sols is GOTY.

I got a big list of “obvious” ones that might get your brain going. Some of these games have ports you may have played already (or are themselves ports), but for the most part I believe they are either unavailable on current gen consoles or they just look and perform better on PC:

  • Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode Two
  • Portal, Portal 2
  • Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout: New Vegas
  • Pathologic 2, The Void, Cargo! - The Quest for Gravity, Know by heart
  • Deus Ex
  • Thief, Thief II: The Metal Age
  • Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, Hitman: Blood Money
  • F.E.A.R., F.E.A.R. 2
  • Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
  • Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure
  • Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
  • Stephen’s Sausage Roll
  • Myst, Riven
  • King of Dragon Pass
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
  • Mount and Blade: Warband
  • The Witcher, The Witcher 2, The Witcher 3
  • System Shock, System Shock 2
  • X-COM: UFO Defense, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, XCOM 2
  • Vampire: The Masquarade - Bloodlines
  • Condemned: Criminal Origins
  • Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
  • Penumbra Overture, Penumbra: Black Plague

And then a SPECIAL MENTION for the Off-Peak series by Cosmo D: Off-Peak, The Norwood Suite, Tales from Off-Peak City, and Betrayal at Club Low. They are The Best Games.

As an FMV sicko, I can’t recommend this enough, especially in the fall. It hit that perfect sweet point that only really existed for a couple of years in the 90s when the budgets and the talents were both almost there enough to generate some real golden b-movie situations.

Absolutely. I recommended Tales From Off-Peak City Vol. 1 above, but they’re all something special, Even Saturn V, which is just an interactive gallery.

got my first gaming PC (since 2005) in 2021. If you like curating libraries, besides steam, I really like using Playnite, cause it lets me add games willy nilly, wether they are installed or not. So I curated my library of PC games, ranging from the 1970’s to today, that I would like to play. A backlog of sorts. Also I agree the Xbox One Elite 2 controller is great, so is the normal Xbox One controller.

That last recc also reminds me of another game that is ported elsewhere but feels quite at home on PC: Return of the Obra Dinn

Oh! Also, the Lisa trilogy, and either the first or second Darkest Dungeon game (I like the overall structure of the first game a lot more, but the combat improvements in the second are immense)

I think pound for pound this thread might have the most cool ass games on this whole forum fr

yeah I want to second that ZeroRanger and VoidStranger by System Erasure are some of the best games made …period… in the past few years. Both are very inventive within rigid genres, that help make them approachable to newcomers, and great for genre vets. And these games did the rare thing where I’m now a “System Erasure fan”. Can’t wait for their next game

Lunacid owns.

My PC kinda died last year and the only reason I want to revive it is to play more Lunacid
