Near the end of Schreier’s second book, Press Reset, he raises the question of what the video game industry would look like if it doesn’t chew up and spit out its key staff (not exaggerating: “It chews them up and then spits them back out, leaving nothing but gristle and bones behind” (263)). The developer Disbelief is used as a key example, a company that treats staff decently and maintains steady contracts rather than going all-or-nothing on one game.

How’s that going for them? Have other companies taken up that kind of contract work or other positive moves like transparent salary structures and no-crunch policies?
