My local place used to be 14 but bumped it up to 18 which I was pretty annoyed by. I was looking at mailing in as well. Reformed Film Lab and DarkRoom.com look pretty decent and I think you save a few bucks.
I am looking into developing at home and there is some cost but I discovered a few things. It seems a lot easier than it was when I learned in high school. You can buy a lightproof bag to put your film in the canister and you don’t need a dedicated room at all. Maybe use the lightproof bag in the bathroom with the light off just to be safe. Also you can develop color now and the main investment is getting a sous-vide cooker to heat up your chemicals to the correct temperature. It doesn’t seem that hard otherwise. I think the big thing is its just time consuming to develop and scan. So if you like the process it’s pretty cool and saves a lot of money overall but if you don’t it’s like dang.
What I ended up doing too is when my in-laws ask me what I want for xmas or my birthday I ask for a giftcard to the photo place near me and I can use that for developing film. Makes the 60 bucks you spend developing not feel so bad.
Oh one last thing! That ektar is giving you a lot of bang for your buck! you’re getting double the photos!
Oh that’s so interesting! Yeah I have some awareness of the black bag method, maybe I could try that for some B&Ws if I decide to pursue that further. The sous-vide machine thing is wild—I can stop picturing someone thoughtfully examining their negatives while enjoying a lovely plate of steak and vegetables hahaha.
But yeah, I AM pumped to see what the EKTAR manages to produce. I suppose I’ll wait and take the other roll in after.
Ah, I used to have one of these, but I sold it years ago because it seemed like film was dead.
To all those folks above talking about developing at home, it’s definitely super easy. Last batch I did was in my dining room in full light. Dark bag for the win.
It has the ability to calcuate some rough times for many different temperatures if you can’t be bothered getting it exactly right. I have air-conditioning in my spare room at home, so I just set it to 20C (sorry I heaps don’t know what a Fahrenheit is) and do it in there usually.
Been a while between drinks on here. Here are some recent shots from my film camera :) B&W shots are developed by me, colour is by lab.
I was also going to recommend a dark bag. I want a dark bag and scanner set up once I’m out of school to develop and print at home. While I’m still in school, I have access to the photo lab on campus, which rules.
I made a bit of a mistake when delivering the film. Forgot to unwind the film, went to take it out and bam, lost a bunch of photos. But most of them were fine, thanks to the strange Leica film loading mechanism. Lesson learned, always wind your film when it runs out, no matter what haha.
Oddly enough I feel like the most interesting photos from the roll were the ones that got exposed to my foolish light leak.
This was shot with a new-to-me Leica Q from 2015, with a 28mm F1.7 fixed lens.
So I was way up in this toad’s face!
This is a second attempt at a “travel camera” after I ended up with a M43 camera with a 100-300 lens and accidentally became a birder.
But my next planned “travel” is to Yellowstone… so I’m not gonna bring this camera and stand 3 feet in front of a bison!
So I gotta figure out why! I got a little notebook to write down which focus and aperture settings I use for pictures in the future so that I hopefully end up with less bad pictures next time.
Also shot the rest of an expired roll that came with the camera
I picked up a Canon R50 refurbed for pretty cheap and I love this little camera. Fun and easy to use, all the features if you need em and takes awesome video so far.
Picked up a 50mm f/1.4 lens for my film camera. Decided to get some Delta 3200 lab developed this time. Went out for dinner and drinks at night. Came out very nice.
