fancy looking place there!

That is Catedral da SĂ©, considered the (x,y) = 0,0 of Sao Paulo.

Today i was there because the city hall is helping some organized civil societies and the national homeless associations plan for the “LatinAmerica Homeless Day”.

This event which happens every August 19th takes place in that Cathedral Square because in 2004 occurred a massacre that killed 7 homeless and left others with major injuries. The perpetrators were never caught nor any investigation was made at the time. Some witnesses say the police did it.

Since then, the homeless began a political movement for human rights. One of the (if not the first) homeless-made movements ever.

Also, 2015 in the Cathedral stairs, a homeless gave his life to save a hostage woman from a very violent criminal.

That square has many meanings for the homeless population history. Today, specially after the pandemic, Sao Paulo has nearly 54,000+ people living on the streets.

This is a picture of when the Cathedral was opened to the public (still unfinished) in 1954.

I have a question for the other film photography appreciators.

So, I bought a cute little film camera for myself as a birthday present last month, a Kodak EKTAR H35 Half Frame Camera. Been since college I shot in film, or indeed on anything other than my phone. It’s very sweet and I hope it takes decent photos; I took it with me everywhere on a trip to the coast.

Anyway, I just stopped by the quirky local film shop in the Cool Neighborhood where I live. They wanted 20 bucks to develope a single roll of film. No prints, just an email of scans.

Is this the normal rate? I know I just turned 34 and am definitely becoming prone to an occasional Back In My Day attitude but surely this is robbery right? What are y’all’s experience with contemporary pricing? Should I just bite the bullet? Thank you!

most places around us charge around 15-20 for develop and scan. my wife does develop only and scans them herself so it’s cheaper but obviously a larger up front investment for the scanner.

It’s always been 15-20 for me too. Very unfortunate!

My local place is $17.

So be it. I just looked up Walgreens and it’s seventeen there so
Well, I hope the mousy art student who got hit with the full force of my Old Man’s Incredulity won’t mind me coming back lol. Thanks y’all for the input! Looking forward to sharing some shots when I get them back <3

would it not be more cost effective to develop at home. At least for black and white?

I learned B&W development in art school, so I don’t feel completely at a loss but I don’t think my current space could cheaply or easily be made lightproof. Not that closet developers aren’t a thing of course, I’m saying this without researching the at home methods. So maybe!

fwiw we tried the at-home thing and the initial cost of set up + storage + space + chance of error ended up making professional development much more appealing. but i learned B/W development in school too and under the right conditions it’s a lot of fun.

I mail mine to a lab in Florida, Reformed Film Lab, it’s $12/roll for small scans (plus shipping there and negatives back). They have a rewards system that adds up pretty quick and a phone app that’s easy to use. Hoping to try a local spot next (would still need to mail thanks to traffic lol). My understanding is Walgreens and CVS won’t give you negatives back just the scans but haven’t tried them myself.
