Knuckles' Chaotix - Memories of Summer '95

In episode #371, @exodus spends some hard-earned credits to get everyone on the panel to play Knuckles’ Chaotix with their partner. I floated the idea of doing a forum game club for this, but then kinda forgot about it until it was brought up again in the latest episode. So what better time than Valentine’s day to do this?

Simply put, let’s see if we can play the 32X flagship classic Knuckles’ Chaotix with our significant others alongside the Insert Credit panel. If you lack a significant other, maybe you can do it with a significant friend? Or maybe a significant self. No one is stopping you from playing this on your own! However, I enjoy the co-op angle on this task, since I’ve never fully played through the game that way, so I think it’d be the most interesting if we tried our best to play it that way.

First up, some important information:

#1 HOW TO PLAY KNUCKLES’ CHAOTIX IN 2 PLAYER
You would think this is as simple as the second controller possessing Tails in the other classic Sonic games, but not quite! The gist of it is that Knuckles’ Chaotix needs you to actively select the 2 player option from the file select screen, however it will not allow you to do this on initial setup. This means that you CANNOT use the default “no save” option if you want to play 2 player.

So, essentially, simply pick one of the three empty save files (preferably with automatic save, I never tried this with manual), then have player 1 go through the opening segment (about 4 minutes of playtime if you skip the bonus level), once you hit this screen, go left to exit to the title screen.

Now, re-enter the file select and your file should now have a save on it.

Simply start the file and you should be able to pick 2 player mode.

Phew!

#2 HOW TO PLAY KNUCKLES’ CHAOTIX
If you’re unfamiliar with this game, you could just hop straight in and mess around. It’s a bit different from Sonic tradition, but not impossible to parse. However, if you feel stumped, here are some pointers.

First off, Knuckles’ Chaotix revolves around a rubber band mechanic which ties two characters together. This can be used in all kinds of ways to physics your way across the worlds. You can bounce, drag, rebound and just in general fling yourself all over the place. You’ll need to learn how to use this, or you’re NOT gonna be able to get through some situations. The game has a somewhat lengthy optional tutorial that I still highly recommend following if you’re new. You’ll be surprised what you can do!

Secondly, the game has 7 playable characters with their own attributes. These include 5 main characters (Knuckles, Mighty, Espio, Charmy and Vector) and 2 claw game duds (Heavy and Bomb) which will mostly be a detriment. Watch out for those! Overarchingly, the characters play like Sonic would. Knuckles can glide and climb. Mighty is basically a straight Sonic copy but with wall jumps. Espio can run on walls and ceilings. Charmy can fly indefinitely. Vector can climb and do a little air dash. Conversely, Heavy is as the name implies, heavy, while Bomb will easily explode at anything and hurt you. Oof!

Thirdly, this game is heavily randomized. Presumably because it’s fun. It’s set in an amusement park, after all! While you get to pick your main character, the partners are won in a crane game. HOWEVER, when playing in 2 player mode this can be sidestepped. So if you don’t wanna gamble for the sake of it, simply ignore the Combi Catcher. But if you do, the controls are simple, move left or right and press down to catch. Watch out so your target doesn’t move out of the way before you snatch it! Don’t stress, you’ve got ten full seconds to work within.

In the same vein, the levels are also randomized. Instead of the usual act-divided zone set-up, we gamble on this as well. At the far end of the hub world is a bumper you hit to stop a roulette wheel. There are five zones, each with five acts. Once you beat an act, the next time you land on that zone it will play the following act. When all acts in a zone have been beaten, the zone will be blacked out on the wheel. Meaning that you’ll always play a new level until you’ve gotten through all of them. Your current zone progress can be viewed on the big screen before the Combi Catcher.

There is more to Knuckles’ Chaotix than this, but I feel that’s for you to find out. Wouldn’t be much of a game club otherwise. Have fun, everyone!

Thank you for writing this up. I’ve unsuccessfully tried to play it a half dozen times in my life but having this primer makes it more likely for me to stick with it past the first 4 minutes!

Going to play this with my kids. Because it sounds like it’s going to be booting up the Bickertron 2025 if I tossed two of them in there unsupervised!

Between the kinda-hidden 2P mode, the removal of Sonic during development and the fact that this thing was plopped out on the 32X, I have a very strong suspicion that Sega didn’t want anyone to play this thing.

I finished (and enjoyed) Chaotix once out of sheer novelty when I first discovered emulation in the early 2000s. Since then I’ve tried so many times and just can’t bring myself to like it. Maybe the collective IC experience is a chance to visit it again for me. Won’t be playing it with my partner though, I don’t want her knowing I play Chaotix.

I’ve got memories of Knuckles Chaotix from the summer of '96. I remember standing in front of that table in the Wal-Mart where they put all the liquidation stuff, staring at it for quite a while. They had a few 32xs for $20 bucks and copies of Knuckles Chaotix for $10, but no other games. I thought to myself that I couldn’t justify the added clutter just to play a single Sonic/not Sonic game. Judging by the current prices alone, I think I made the wrong choice.

playing and loving it with my spouse

i played the tutorial though and am confused: can we not do the hold mechanic? some characters seemingly pull harder than others and dont let you build up that crazy fast boost like you can in singleplayer. any advice would be nice even if its just that you cant do this in 2player

You can do it! What is it that’s not happening for you?

in singleplayer you can press B(?) and make the other player stay in place while you run in a direction and then one of you lets go to shoot off in that direction
you can SORTA do this by holding down while staying still but at max speed the other player just drags you along and you cant really get absurd speed from a standstill in a similar way

just a minor point of confusion we’re getting along in the game pretty okay (altho the special stages are really hard !!!)

If I recall correctly you can replicate the hold feature by running in the opposite direction from each other and then have one let go.

One of you holds b and then the other moves away from the person holding b… It’s basically the same operation! You can also pick up your partner and throw them

Played for a while last night when I was sure nobody was watching. Quick thoughts after 1-2 acts from each zone completed:

  • Like with lots of other weird offshoot Sonic games (3D springs to mind), the soundtrack is amazing. Better than many of the ‘real’ entries in the series.
  • If you treat it less like a traditional Sonic game and more like a Sonic-themed physics toy there’s a lot more enjoyment to be had. Maybe this is why the level and character randomisers are there - it’s a novelty experience, not a Sonic game.
  • I wonder if there are any romhacks or fangames that do anything interesting with the level design. The game’s own levels basically boil down to exploiting the physics until you accidentally reach the right platform. I feel like someone must have done something clever with it at some point.
  • I’m being kinda negative about the whole thing but I am going to keep going. I maintain that this isn’t a good game, but it’s definitely interesting. Enjoying it more this time round than I have before.

Almost finished now. I’m sure I saw someone looking through the window as I played last night, but I quickly turned over to some pornography. Think I got away with it.

Further thoughts:

  • Calling this game ‘Chaotix’ really was just turning a bug into a feature, wasn’t it? “Hey, this thing handles like shit and the only way to win is to trick the game into glitching you into the right area! It’s so chaotic! It’s supposed to be that way!” Maybe Balan Wonderworld would have been a hit if they’d called it ‘Mediocrix’.
  • The art is beautiful and the music is incredible, there’s just no game in there.
  • Heavy can fuck right off.
  • I accidentally killed my partner last night and spent 30 seconds playing the game solo. It was glorious. I felt like a medieval knight taking off a suit of armour at the end of a long day. Then I realised there were still archers or angry peasants or whatever all over the castle and if I wanted to survive I’d need to put the armour back on AND get into a big water tank filled with piss.

I hate this game.

Whoops okay, now having done my actual playthrough I realize you cannot indeed do the hold b when playing two player. You can run away from each other and then still slingshot, you just don’t hold b.

It’s dramatically less fun to play single player vs two player!

the whole playthrough I was worried it was a skill issue

I’m curious to watch a singleplayer speedrun but ALL coop speedruns are immediately more interesting

I had fun with my husband ! even if we save scummed the bosses to get through at a reasonable pace

also why does pausing let you move your character where ever you want?

I didn’t notice the pause thing! Which character is able to move when paused?

both! but they maintain their position relative to each other

maybe it was just something weird with my emulator it showed like exact x,y coordinates and almost seemed like a debug screen?

was really helpful for the boss fights
