Linda Cube 25th Anniversary

Burned the game to a disc last night and can confirm it works on original hardware! So excited to finally give this a go in the next coming days.

my mister is booting it too and im just so excited to play linda cubed again (but not again, for the first time)

What's the difference between the two versions available on the playstation? (Linda Cubed Again and Linda Cubed Again (rev 1))

I see the translation's patch notes say that the patch works on either version, but I can't find any info to help me know which version to play. Does it even matter?

@rejj there‘s a one in one hundred chance that it matters at all. Rev 1 is the rom dumper’s way of referring to very slight revision patches applied to rereleases of games. it‘s likely the difference between 1.0 and 1.01. Or often it’s for a budget rerelease. Very few games does this ever matter, and usually I want to go with the 1.0 release. In the case of nintendo games, it usually means less censorship (ocarina of time) more fun glitches, and easier to mod, or, like you noted, sometimes it can make a difference for flash carts. For worse games it can mean game-breaking bugs were fixed. I doubt there's much info on the revisions of linda cubed in english (though that will likely change rapidly now that the game is in english), but I also doubt it matters much to begin with.

This actually is true in the case of this English patch. There's an early-game dialogue option which softlocks the game because it doesn't let the player choose an option. It's not plot-crucial in any way but it's pretty easy to stumble across and, as you can imagine, a lot of players were complaining about it, lol. This problem is fixed in the 1.1 version.

EDIT: Oops, I misunderstood! I thought this conversation was about the translation revisions. Regarding the base game, I'm not sure what the differences are.

finished scenario A and closing in on the end of scenario B and i cannot recommend this enough, what a wild little game this is. scenario A was maybe… 10 hours? so not even a serious commitment, if you dear reader are on the fence JUST PLAY IT

I Also just started this game. Really really love it so far. The Premise is so unique and smart. As with most “time-passes” games though, im paranoid im taking it too slow and playing it wrong. Any linda vets have beginner tips for the newcomers (lindanoob) ?

@Updog I wouldn‘t call myself a “veteran” since this is also my first time playing, though I am nearly finished with Scenario C which seems to put me ahead of most players I’ve seen posting on the forums. I will say this right now: for Scenarios A and B, you absolutely do not need to worry about “playing too slow.” Even in Scenario C, there‘s significantly more to do but the time limit feels more like an extension of the season system than any real Pikmin-esque deadline. By the time you reach Scenario C you’ll be more than ready to handle the heavier responsibilities too, since the two earlier scenarios both elegantly teach everything about the game you'll need to know in an extremely low-stakes environment.

There's only one real word of advice I'd offer that I actively use myself, but it's a little spoiler-y and not at all relevant to anyone who might have a better memory than I do.

In Nabul, there is a computer terminal next to the animal merchant which lists every animal in the game, as well as the location they can be found in. In instances where you‘re a few animals short of the goal and can’t seem to figure out where the last few are, checking this terminal and writing all the missing animals and their locations in a little text document absolutely trivializes the hunting experience. The game loses much of its mystique this way (though makes up for it in others) but it‘s a great method to scrounge up a few final guys and closing out the scenario if you’ve already finished wrapping up its narrative.

@Funbil great to hear thanks for the response. Will probably use that spoiler advice as well.

I also finished Scenario 1 a few days ago, but it definitely took me more than ten hours. A lot of it was me getting my bearings, so depending on how fast you acclimate, it may take more or less. I think I was somewhere between 10-20 hours?

Also, question for anyone who has beaten Scenario A:

>!Should I capture 60 creatures before leaving? I think I was at 40ish creatures and was curious if anything different / important would happen if I reached that secondary goal. (If I learn this knowledge elsewhere in the game, just tell me to keep playing!)!<

if it‘s as great a game as I’m led to believe, and held in such adjacency to mother 2, then there is no wrong way to play, except to stop playing.

@ninjapresident yeah i probably should have phrased it better, 10h was the minimum amount of time it took me but it probably took me more than 10. game doesn‘t track hours, and i was playing on vita so there was a lot of start-stop i was doing. sorry for misrepresenting that everyone! it couldn’t have been THAT much more than 10 is what i should've said.

re: your spoilered secondary question: i don't remember it mentioning any kind of secondary goal at any point? where did you see that?

@Updog also re your time passing question (spoilered for those who want to know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING but i don't feel like this is a spoiler, really) – i am not exactly a power gamer (altho i guess i know my way around an rpg) and like… how should i put this. the story made me want to keep chasing the story, so i wouldn‘t say i was leisurely, but i was CHILL about it, took time here and there to poke at things i shouldn’t (the world is pretty open in there!), and i still finished Scen A in about 30% of the offered time. And then with what I had learned there, i went into Scen B and finished it in about 60% of the allotted time, but that would have been more like 50% if i hadn't kinda made life harder for myself in a way i knew i was doing at the time

oh another general bit of advice – you learn little things as you play A and B that seem like they‘d be really helpful for C. you know, stuff like, there’s a place over here, that links to here, that has this animal in it, there's a treasure chest here blah blah blah… i REALLY wish i had kept notes. so notebook likers rejoice, i think linda cube is a notebook game

@brillpickle I'll have to remember where it was, maybe the ark? There‘s an animal breakdown menu somewhere that has like total # of animals, animals you still have to catch, etc. I wasn’t sure whether or not the animal catching # was animals available in that scenario or a secondary goal. I just stopped and knew I could go back to my save file if there actually was something interesting!

Not every scenario has every single animal, and of course Scenario A has the least of all since it's like a warm-up round. I think what you're seeing is just the total number of animals available in that scenario, and therefore what you're talking about is essentially "100%ing" the scenario. I can't imagine what (if anything) would change for doing this, though this game does love its secrets and the season/year system is pretty heavy-handedly suggesting optimized challenge runs. So it's possible, but again, seems unlikely to me. At the very least, don't worry about that on your first play.

i'm under the impression that “extra credit” re: minimum number of animals vs. max number matters more for scenario c

@Funbil pretty much how I felt, I'll see if I can find that menu again and report back!

@ninjapresident i think the thing you're talking about is >!the robot closest to the registry thing in the ark! tells you how many you have/how many remain uncaught.!<

also i said this is a notebook game and i didn't notebook during scenario a/b so for scenario c i have gone, uh, a little overboard (added a blur to avoid being spoilery)

I guess I‘m missing something, but everything seems prohibitively expensive in the little bit I’ve played. I ran into a group of tougher enemies and one of my dogs go K.O.‘d. I guess I would’ve been more careful had I realized it would take over 300G to revive my dog. Is the game as incredibly grindy as it seems to be? I have no clue how I'm supposed to progress and restore my dog outside of selling a crap ton of animals for a pittance.

@Herb how early are you in the game? here's some individual tips; read as many as you feel comfortable with!

For one, always deposit your money in the bank per season! You gain interest, so the amount stacks incrementally.

For two, only use money for services you need. You can get a lot of mileage out of re-purposing your animals rather than just buying everything.

And third, areas typically have animals clustered by levels. If an area is too low or high, go explore somewhere else! There‘s a little grinding in the game, but honestly not that much from what I’ve experienced. Grinding is beneficial, though, because you should always be acquiring animals.

Hopefully these tips help! I tried to not over-explain everything, because part of the fun for me has been figuring out how to optimally play.
