Movies Talk

@yeso#10326 he's slightly more of a jerk in this one! truly hatable in so many ways.

i don't mean to shit on this version; for ppl who loved the original, this is more of it, i just don't think it's a better movie

@fortninety#9930 Counterpoint: Lam Ngai Kai's The Cat is the best movie starring at least one cat that people probably have never heard of.

@tombo#10339 thanks I had heard the extra-jerk cut of the bf was gilding the lily and shading the ending as more petty/retributive

@yeso#10345 yeah, whereas in the original cut a lot of what the characters are really thinking is left up to interpretation (and thus the ending acts as the resolution), in this one they talk more so the seams of the conflict are more visible and the ending feels less earned/justified.

that's a good lookin movie alright, makes me want to watch The Love Witch again

watched Jojo Rabbit. Don't know why I did that. Probably the worst film of the 21st century so far christ have mercy

@yeso#10625 yeah I got maybe 10 minutes into it

perhaps fortunate that claude lanzmann passed on to the next world before jo jo rabbit

Just joined the forum today, my girlfriend and I have been watching movies and rating them together for a year or so now and here are all the ones we have rated 5/5 (although we have agreed that it would be very easy to also rank this list, it's just alphabetical. Some of them are just very good at what they tried to be, whereas others are truly masterpieces):

  • - Alien (1979)
  • - American Movie (1999)
  • - Blade Runner (1982)
  • - Citizen Kane (1941)
  • - Double Indemnity (1944)
  • - Ghost In The Shell (1995)
  • - Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
  • - Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
  • - Once (2007)
  • - Scanners (1981)
  • - Stalker (1979)
  • - The Running Man (1987)
  • - The Seventh Seal (1957)
  • - The Taste of Tea (2004)
  • - Total Recall (1990)
  • Citizen Kane, Stalker, The Seventh Seal and The Taste of Tea in particular really stick out as being some of my favourite movies of all time.

@Kez#10630 just rewatched Citizen Kane. Forgot how laugh out loud funny it is, and I don‘t understand why that’s not talked about much. I mean there's plenty of other stuff to talk about obviously, but the only person I can find calling it a comedy is Welles himself.

it's kind of amazing how engaging citizen kane continues to be. I saw it for the first time senior year high school social studies in literally the last week before graduation when absolutely nobody had any interest or reason to pay attention in class, and even so we were all 100% riveted by it

Yeah, Citizen Kane really has it all. I wouldn‘t go so far as to call it a comedy myself but there’s certainly no shortage of humour. It feels like it has become trendy lately to say it‘s overrated but I think it fully delivers on its accolades. Although it is showing its age, it is far closer to what a modern movie feels like than most of its contemporaries. The DOP did such an incredible job, the acting and delivery comes across as pretty natural overall and Kane’s arc is really engaging.

Speaking of Citizen Kane has anyone sat down to watch Mank yet?

I watched it, didn't think it especially worthwhile unfortunately

    Hmm, thats too bad.

I love the story behind, Finchers father was actually writing the script before he died and then David went on to complete it and make it.

How did it do at emulating CK's style? I read an interview where DF said the conceit of the movie was that it was filmed alongside Citizen Kane.

Last year, I watched Jim Hosking‘s new film, An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn. Jim Hosking directed The Greasy Strangler and Tropical Cop Tales. Beverly Luff Linn is like if Tim & Eric did a sincere love story, set in the pacific northwest. I became so obsessed with the film, watching it many times, that when it came time to go on a little solo road trip, I went up to humboldt county and found all the film’s locations, and took photos and videos of myself reenacting all my favorite scenes. I have been meaning to make a reddit post about it, but I haven‘t. The events that occured in my life on my way up north were so similar to the events of the film, you wouldn’t believe it.

Anyways if you‘ve never heard of Jim Hoskings I suggest giving An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn a watch. It’s his best work so far. Greasy Strangler is not for the faint of heart. Tropical Cop Tales is nonsense.

@Jtwo#10741 not a technical expert but it has that smeary vaseline digital b and w quality and is in scope so did not succeed in that regard. Hard to tell with streaming quality though. Also I don‘t think gary oldman is capable of acting like an american. He just doesn’t behave like an american in any way, very odd.

Last night I watched a Spanish movie called Timecrimes (Los Cronocrímenes). Enjoyed it overall, there was a decent amount of suspense, good performances. Everything ties together quite neatly, throughout the movie I found myself asking questions that were eventually always answered. Normally I don‘t get on with this type of time travel story, but it was all handled very smoothly. I would link a trailer here but honestly the trailers give a lot away, they are not like movie-ruining spoilers but I do think it would be better to go in blind if you are curious about it! It’s only 90 minutes, too.

    watched 2018 documentary film Shirkers

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirkers

very highly recommended! A damn shame what happened to the real film "Shirkers." You'll agree if you watch it I'm sure

Timecrimes is a classic! Very fun movie.

Synchronic, another time travel adjacent movie is on my list for this weekend. I also really want to try and watch the pepe documentary "feels good man."
