I actually thought about saying something lol
I should have known I was heading into some white people shit
I was not fully aware the issue had its own Wikipedia page, how often it happened, or how she STILL continues to defend it. But apparently Charles Mingus found it interesting?
Another piece of Joni Mitchell lore is she claims to have Morgellons. I say claims because the disease itself is subject to some controversy. Being neutral here, but worth a Google search if you want to go down a rabbit hole on some very strange and sometimes disturbing medical forums. So maybe not worth a Google search, on second thought.
learning about this for the first time myself
Yeah I had a quite delayed flight yesterday and did a bit of reading on how people reacted to it. This one about the Mingus collaboration was informative but idk I feel like now I want to read more about both of them because their whole collaboration in that album is truly perplexing. See this article too.
I dislike but understand the notion that it was a naive/misguided attempt at saying something about the music industry/her marginalization as a woman but at the same time Iām like why canāt some white people just be normal about liking music from different cultures.
After centuries of racism, we saw some white people over-correcting into even more racism
thinking through this. If joni mitchell had instead decided to be like: Iām a Polish guy, I know what itās like to be a Polish guy, I have a Polish Soul. To be honest that doesnāt sit well with me. So double thumbs down wrt the blackface imo
Soliciting album recommendations for a few long travel days ahead of me. No constraints on genre, just want to break my habits without relying on the algorithm (starting to see the utility of bonsaiās library project)
by long travel days you mean you will be listening on a plane? important context for my recommendation
Gonna be smart this time and insist you disclose everything youāve ever listened to so I donāt recommend 45 things youāve already formed an opinion about
Hereās in no particular order, some of the albums Iāve been listening to lately:
(Warning, you really have to like H. Jon Benjamin to like this album. And also allow the fact that jazz is free expression. The last one, donāt play out loud!)
One thing I will give Spotify - it remembers what I heard better than I do!
Hope the trip goes well and the above does as much damage to your algorithm as it did to mine. Hereās one last one to really **** it up:
Thanks @Tom ā¦ glad to know I still have friends left on this forum
@Bonsai yes plane but train and boat in the days to come
@captain you know I have eclectic tastesā¦hereās where Iāve been lately
In that case I recommend Gigi Masinās Wind
Occupies a nice space between ambient and jazz music, dynamic enough to keep you engaged but can play supporting role to whatever you see through the train/plane window. Itās an essential travel companion for me.
Itās one of my favorites but if you donāt like it I wonāt feel betrayed.
I got your back for music! Granted some may cross over, many may not but you can never have too much!
And added bonus, with sharing all that, I found I missed a release by one of my favourite artists of late Mitch Murder!
That album cover. I know what Iām doing later.
I love this album. Heās in a band called Gaussian Curve that kinda continues what he was doing there
Recommendations for the rest of us! <3
And I was jk here you go
presented without context, as in the sacred library CD drawers
(sorry for the most hideous post of all time)
You all came through in a big way
I appreciate seeing Alfa Mist on there
Iāve become fully committed to the library music deep dive every week ā I find myself not wanting to listen to music outside of the 6 albums I picked, not even youtube surfing.
Everyoneās recommendation is written down on a little notebook I take to see if I kind find it on the racks. But now that I realize it, isnāt this how people used to find and listen to new music? Iām really showing my age by thinking of this as novel lol.
Yeah before the Internet was around in a big way for me it was just talking to your friends or people who worked at record stores
