I think Disgaea and Persona 3 bookend the goth aesthetic in video games for me, but the Final Fantasy series in the PS2 era had a consistent undercurrent of goth. I remember thinking how much I liked Lulu’s and Fran’s dress.
Other series or games I played that included that one character include Growlanser (especially 3, which was all about death) and Xenosaga (esp. U-TIC’s aesthetic, which was basically goth Catholicism).
As a side note, I knew a student a couple of years ago who seemed to be delving into a c. 2005 Kingdom Hearts aesthetic. He dressed like either Squall or Xoras.
Agreed, and this also reminds me of the totally mall goth, yet rather obscure and kind of pointless GALERIANS and the sequel galerians ash. It’s teens with Tim Burton clothes and chokers who gain powers related to their emotions who have to inject themselves with drugs.
I coulda swore I posted some Gungrave in this thread, because that was my mid-2000s emo/goth jam.
I was never hardcore enough to go full goth, but I certainly appreciated the aesthetic. I had long hair and wore black, sure, but I only owned two (2) chains… One was attached to my Invader Zim wallet, clipped to my pants, and the other I sometimes wore around my neck when I was feeling especially mad at the world.
I recently ordered a copy of The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge after reading about it in an old magazine. This game rules. It feels like Ocarina of Time but with graded stages making up the chapters of the game, like Devil May Cry. Zero is your Navi in this case, but he’s less present. Every time you start a combat encounter, “This is Halloween” starts playing. Encounters with main antagonists trigger reworked versions of their respective songs from the movie.
It acts as a sequel to the movie, picking up a year after. The game looks so much like the movie and you can tell there was a lot of attention to detail to make it feel like you’re wandering through Halloweentown.
Being goth requires a lot of upkeep, and your pet will be grateful if you make sure to supply them with grooming items such as a Gothic Compact Mirror, Black Eye Liner, and a hearty stock of Pitch Black Lipstick.They’ll need to spend hours practising with their eyeliner and eye shadow to get it just right, so be patient! Keeping fresh with Grey Shampoo, Darigan Foamy Soap, and a Fang Brush are also key.’
