Nice things about games you don't like

Inspired by the contrarian video game opinions thread, I wanted to say something nice about Breath of the Wild, but didn’t want to get too off-topic about it:

I absolutely loved the way the game handled its story bits by tying them to the in-game photography quest. These were absolutely my favorite part of the game, both in terms of the way they got me to engage with the world more directly and in the cutscene “rewards” themselves (which is definitely helped by the game’s lovely art-style)

I’m not always a fan of this sort of storytelling in games, but for an atmospheric game like Breath of the Wild it worked incredibly well to let the story exist in the background while still being impactful when engaged with

What are some nice things you can say about games you don’t like?

Excellent thread!!!

Alien Isolation

  • the motion tracker is so cool
  • I genuinely enjoy the hacking minigames
  • the Average Joes are excellent minor enemies
  • Sound design is out of this world
  • It’s obvious the developers really cared about being true to the source material
  • I had a blast passing the controller around with buddies, and I think it’s the best way to experience that game

Golden Sun has good music and graphics.

Star Wars Fallen Order loads pretty quickly.

The cast of Final Fantasy XII is really cool aside from the pesky main character and his little friend

The monsters in Dragon Quest 11 are cute and cool

I think City Connection has some nice backgrounds and locations.

This thread has the potential to be more controversial than the contrarian thread because it’s like “what do you mean that’s the ONLY nice thing about the game”

Vaan absolutely does FFXII a disservice, which is sort of sad. He’s just the wrong main character for that game entirely

Hearts of Iron 4 does an excellent job setting up a day/night system and a front-line management system that feels modern and true to the sort of military history book maps of battles and campaigns.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 has a more open feel to it than many games that specifically bill themselves as an open world game, thanks to how open the physics are and how the early game accommodates so many different configurations of characters alive and dead.

Crazy Taxi is excellent as an arcade game. The size of its map, the wildness of the controls, the whole seat and unit all feel right at home in the arcade.

Opening the door to Limgrave in elden ring feels really cool and I like the dull painterly sheen of the graphics

I can’t remember which but I think Basch was supposed to be the main character and they were forced to switch for marketing junk. That whole game had a messy development. I often wonder what it could be, especially if it was on two discs so the dialogue wasn’t so compressed. Final Fantasy XII has incredible voice acting.

I remember hearing something along those lines, and I think it being Basch sounds right to me as well. Matsuno having to step down mid-development really hurt that game I have to assume

Also, Ashe and Fran obviously deserve spots in the imaginary Bad Bitch Cool Girls only Final Fantasy game.

It’s nice that the player can customize their character in Elden Ring

Everything here reads as a backhanded compliment lol.

But now I might be wrong on the internet! That’s illegal!

This is not the thread for it but I will say that I think they did an admirable job wringing a good performance out of Bobby Edner. In the Pharos when Vaan’s confronting Gabranth, that was an actually good and emotionally-affecting performance.
