Non-game music that reminds you of a game

Ed's Babe reminds me of

lol this ones for the coders

This is my favorite hidden zone in Sonic, when spring comes to Sonic with a strawberry in the mouth.

@穴 ¡mii gusta!

0:28 sounds like Final Fantasy X lol

I forget whether I posted this before but the synth in this sounds like it’s straight off a Genesis. I reckon you could replicate this in GEMS.

Deja que los fuegos de Rubicón ardan

Interesting hour long video on the music that inspired the soundtracks of M🌎THER and M🌎THER2, based on this promotional article for the GBA compilation of the two games, published circa 2003.

@chazumaru before I even watch this video:
nowadays, to me, everything is “mother music”. I listen to so much stuff from many eras that the soundtracks took from. sometimes it’s just a vibe. When I was younger, I felt I needed to know the inspirations of mother music. Now, I embody it. I used to pour over that article when I was in middle school, and, like all things mother, it has made more and more sense holistically as I’ve gotten older. Hip Tanaka definitely got his little time sig changes from Frank Zappa, and he uses them in more than just mother, but doctor Mario especially. We will never stop finding new connections, it’s a fun practice, but now I kind of see everything as Mother music, because I see mother as a reflection of life as a whole. The combination of folk, jazz, experimental– it connections to everything good.

it’s technically cheating because it’s the same Yamaha DX7 synth its chipset is based on but that track sounds Megadrivey as heck

@diogo this is going on my bicycle playlist, thanks!

@treefroggy furthering my point that all music is mother music:

(I blasted this the whole way home from the bar on my bicycle)

@chazumaru Grateful Drag is the most IRL Magypsies without being actual Magypsies:

The opening ten seconds of this Dragonforce song always made me think I was about to start a battle in a JRPG. I’m not a big fan of the band these days for a variety of reasons both relating to changing tastes and uh… learning more about the band’s behavior, but yeah “Revolution Deathsquad” always gave off JRPG battle vibes to me.

I always thought Joe Hisaishi’s music sounded video-gamey, all the way back to when I first saw Nausicaa when I was like eleven. I didn’t have words for it back then.
There was a long while where I didn’t hear Yuzo Koshiro’s apprenticeship in his work either, but the more Video Games I play, the more appreciation I have for Yuzo Koshiro. Playing Ys I-II in tandem with busting through the entire Etrian Odyssey series was good. Now in EOIV there is some straight up Hayao Miyazaki sounding stuff:

(just listening to this for the post made me start crying, jeez)

@oprel lol I had not revisited WWtBaM, ever, since the early 2000’s, but I’ve revisited KF a ton. You are so right. Glad I didn’t miss this. Maybe this is why I love KF music, because I loved this show as a kid.

I’d enjoy Rainbow Road more if this were the soundtrack

I just saw the last post I made in this thread (4ish years ago!) and the YT account it linked to is gone so I have no idea what I even posted. So from now on, whenever I link a YT video I’m going to mention the title, too. (watch how long that lasts(

Bronski Beat - Hit That Perfect Beat

Probably from a Sonic 3 level, especially with that pitch-bent PSGish instrument. Funnily enough, when having a quick look for an instrumental, this pops up:

wtf

These two sound like they could’ve appeared in (or be specifically written for) a Katamari title:
Max Sedgley - Happy

Röyksopp - Eple

And to me, this has always sounded like it came straight from an Amiga:
Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Love Missile F1-11

when i hear ‘down by the river’ from BG3

i think of kenny loggins’ danger zone from top gun
