Panzer Dragoon Remake

It‘s not faithful, and that’s the problem—like, the discussions about whether the original game‘s systems were dated or could/should have been updated are irrelevant because they didn’t accurately recreate the controls to begin with.

@gsk#1016 sorry, should definitely have phrased that as “attempting to be faithful.” You‘re absolutely right, they missed the mark pretty dang hard.

I’m assuming that the coming update is an effort to go from the current mess to something that is actually accurate, but at this point, who knows?

From what I‘ve seen of it, it just looks too busy. There’s a real beauty in the starkness of the dead yet regenerating world of the original. As others have said, the original games really did use the limitations a d peculiarities of the Saturn to make something special, and I kind of feel like the lack of limitations now make it a completely different beast.

Another substantial update coming.

@Renfrew#1154 As others have said, the original games really did use the limitations a d peculiarities of the Saturn to make something special, and I kind of feel like the lack of limitations now make it a completely different beast.

This is a thing for a lot of titles for me. I just spent some time this evening playing a handful of PS1 demos on an OPM demo disc, and there's something really charming about that era of graphics that gets completely lost when updating it. The Panzer Dragoon series goes double for this - they made that hardware sing and created games with an incredibly distinct look and feel, and the remake just does not hit that look or feel at all...

@chazumaru#1159 That is a really exciting list of updates, hopefully not too distant in the future.

This game feels like one of those videos where someone‘s loaded like, a dozen mods into Skyrim and the trees look super nice but everything else is kind of a shitshow. I know Everyone Has Got A Take these days, and I don’t want to be negative, but I don't have a lot of faith given that none of these death by a thousand cuts issues were noticed during development.

Yeah, once again when doing remakes, if the source was stylized, you have to either stylize in a new way, or sharpen up what‘s there - if you wind up trying to modernize things or make them more realistic you’ll lose the script a bit.

I ammmm curious about the patch, but at this point, though I hate to say it, I want to wait for a sale.

Patch 1.3 is out in the West.

@shane pointed out that that they talk about 60 fps performance mode in a 30fps video so you can‘t tell if it’s true. does not inspire confidence yet!

I am not video editing-savvy enough but my understanding is that it’s never simple to mix 30fps footage and 60fps footage in the same video? Please correct me if I am wrong. Here is a recording of the 60fps mode.

Also here is a good summary/review of the patch highlighting some less obvious changes and remaining issues.

About his last point, I don’t think the goal of adding gyro is to play in handheld mode but rather to aim better when playing with the Joy-Con grip (i.e. separated from the console) or Pro Controller. At least, I hope that’s what they were going for.

yeah, I mean that's why you do the whole video in 60! the 60 fps video looks decent though.

maaaaaaaaaybe I'll give it a try now, it does seem like they made the aiming movement snappier.

This is really encouraging. In the distant future when my physical copy arrives, perhaps all the issues will be smoothed out. It's definitely making progress, which is a great sign.

Panzer Dragoon Remake is now out on Stadia and free for Pro users (which I think might still be all users right now?). It runs in 4K. (The second video is limited to 1080p but shows better playing.)

Meanwhile, the Japanese version of the game on Switch is still on version 1.0.0. despite 1.3.0 being out in the West three weeks ago...

Wow!! Looks like they got someone to just turn the game on, rotate the camera to the right, and occasionally jam the shot button. “first look” is about all they did.

anyway, 4k looking pretty good I guess?

Wow, is an AI playing this or something? You‘d think after a few minutes of staring off to the right they’d figure out how to not do that, or reset the recording…

there's a lot of folks out there who just want to be first, no matter the cost.

Hey! You try finding some actual human beings who play on Stadia! Anyway I added a slightly less embarrassing video.

Ha ha, sad but true (sad for those of us releasing a stadia game real soon)

Update 1.3 finally released for Japanese users about five weeks after the rest of the World. They skipped 1.1 entirely (which is not a bad thing).

Also since this forum thread has been officially designated “all things Panzer Dragoon” by the Sanshiro-Marxist government of Capitol Hill, there was a new trailer for **Panzer Dragon: Voyage Record** at the VR showcase thingy earlier this week.

god, I hope they do a non-vr version of this. doesn't sound like it though!!!
