I think I have watched like 15 movies since the last poll. was a big movie watcher watching up to a movie a day as a teen. haven’t returned to movie watching.

I’m not super into films, so doing ten feels a bit daunting, but if I had a try, I guess:
(Alphabethically)

  • Akira (1988)
  • Alice in Wonderland (1915)
  • Angel’s Egg (1985)
  • Blade Runner (1982)
  • The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)
  • Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)
  • Labyrinth (1986)
  • The Life Aquatic (2005)
  • Night on the Galactic Railroad (1985)
  • Resan till Melonia (1989)

Half of this list feels desperate. I like films you can hang out in, but it doesn’t seem like people wanna make those.

whenever i try to answer a question like this, i somehow find myself forgetting every movie i’ve seen in recent or distant memory.

here’s an off the cuff list looking at my dvd shelf and/or hard drive.

for the tally -
kids return (1996)
a brighter summer day (1991)
fallen angels (1995)
goodfellas (1990)
high and low (1963)
aguirre the wrath of god (1972)
my neighbor totoro (1988)
drive (2011)
the seventh seal (1957)
hard boiled (1992)

a lot of great movies left off this list, but here are three honorable mentions i struggled to omit

Fallen Angels was one of my honorables!

(I deleted this and then posted it again.)

It’s great! Tbh any wong kar wai film could have took that spot—I almost included Happy Together instead

This was a surprisingly hard exercise! I keep thinking about other movies that I also love, in particular Sadko (1953) that’s probably one of the most hauntingly beautiful movies I’ve ever seen. I might have to revisit my list to see if there are any that I like slightly less than it because dang it deserves to make my top 10!

There are also tons of movies that are fun to watch but that aren’t actually great or even good.

Late Spring (1949)
The Good the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
HOUSE (1977)
Alien (1979)
Point Break (1991)
Chungking Express (1994)
Babe (1995)
End of Evangelion (1997)
The Wrestler (2008)
Mad Max Fury Road (2015)

that’s right. two movies by George Miller. Maybe not my actual top 10 but I tried to get a little variety

I just did it off the cuff because I knew if I thought too hard I’d never post anything. I do see some things in here that I wish I had picked already but that’s the way it goes

I’m surprised that it doesn’t get talked about more on here but maybe because it’s the most “mainstream” of the “wacky” movies? I also debated between suspiria for this one. both came out in 1977!

Won’t make my list (I think), but The Rock is fantastic.
