Someone shared a link to the John Margolies Roadside America Photograph Archive on discord the other day and by golly is this a treasure trove of photographs that fit this theme, especially in the vein of adventure games like Kentucky Route Zero or Full Throttle. There’s literally over 11k photos in this gallery, but here’s a few to give you the flavor:
When I used to make games, my bg’s and textures for hand drawn sprites were always photographs, I really like the look of 16bit and 32bit games with photographic assets that clash.

@kory it’s real special being up there when it’s foggy just the right amount. The wind (there’s always wind) pushes the fog around and sometimes a glimmer of the beautiful view you’re surrounded by opens up, only to be swallowed again in fog moments later.
@kory I’m excited for you that you got a good direction for the wind. Downtown Portland looks like an airport smoking area today.
The Portland Century bike ride was supposed to go out there but it got canceled this year!
