probably why they couldn’t hold on to Soto

One look at Devin Williams clean shaven was all it took to reverse that lol

Canada v US in the 4 Nations final last nice was really really good hockey. It’s unfortunate that basically everything involving the US right now feels super toxic to partake in, hearing the Canadian anthem booed and seeing a ton of maga hats in the audience just a constant reminder for all us Patriots how fucked we are

Ahhh, feels good to be a Ferrari fan! Never thought I’d say that, but here we are. (Although, I may end up regretting those words, given the team’s track record of sloppiness and fumbling championships in recent years.)

I keep telling myself Lewis still has one more WDC run in him, and this car will be the one to do it in. Looking forward to watching pre-season testing as I wait patiently for baseball and the F1 season proper to kick off.

I think he still has one in him, he showed it in spurts last year but I think a change of scenery and fresh motivation is what he needs. Ferrari is the right fit. Hoping we get a bunch of different winners this year; all I want is one Alonso win to be happy with the season.

Drive to Survive comes back 3/7, ready for some phony forced plotlines and drama to get the hype train rolling.

I’m excited for his run with Ferrari, I got a feeling this season will be a blast!

I’m feeling conflicted, much like I did in 2015. I’ve been a life-long (long suffering) Ferrari fan, and I wasn’t thrilled about Vettel joining the team at the time. As an Australian, I had opinions about his relationship with Webber at Red Bull. By the end of his tenure, it was fine and I grew to like him.

I’ve never been a Hamilton fan – he always seems to be complaining about everything else except his own performance when he isn’t clear out in front. There’s something wrong with the tyres. There’s something wrong with the wing. This car is undrivable. Why did you ruin my pitstop? ad nauseum

…so like I said, I find myself in a familiar-yet-uncomfortable situation. I’m hoping for a similar outcome, and the Ferrari family mellows him out and I can learn to enjoy his time with the team.

I’m not convinced he has another championship left in him. We obviously know essentially nothing about this year’s technical developments, but I expect to see a Max/Lando/Oscar battle at the front, with Lewis and Charles hopefully not getting in each others’ way for fourth.

This feels like a common thing with most of the very best drivers, at least since I’ve been watching. Max whines all the time too. Lando takes responsibility for things sometimes but is a huge baby over the radio.

It’s coming up on sumo time again, sports fans!

The rankings for the March tournament are out:

No great surprises here, but a few highlights:

  • Both brothers Wakatakakage and Wakamotoharu are out of the named ranks after an especially poor January from Wakamotoharu;
  • Chiyoshoma surprised everyone in January with his performance and now finds himself at M2. I would be rather impressed if he manages to do well there, I fear he’s a bit out of his depth now;
  • Atamifuji has tanked to M8, also after a horrible January. He’s better than that, I expect he’ll do well and bounce back a few;
  • Shodai lands at M7, which I think is pretty much exactly where he wants to be these days. I expect to see him hover around M8-M6 in perpetuity, trading off 8-7 and 7-8 performances;
  • Mitakeumi plummets all the way to M17. He just has not looked good in any way since receiving his promotion to Ozeki this time in 2022;
  • and of course we have the newly promoted Hoshoryu with his first tournament at Yokozuna. As a fan of his, I’m hoping he does well!

The tournament starts on March 9th.

Hakkeyoi!

Yeah, agreed. Most points folks bring up about Hamilton somehow end up being about his personality, despite the fact that F1 has always been full of off-putting personalities.

At least Hamilton has been all class off track, rarely dangerous on it, and very upfront about doing right in the world and trying to use his resources to help out. He’s won championships as a front runner and as the one chasing, shown he can win from the front, that he can drive wheel to wheel with the best of them, and manage his tires better than any driver I’ve seen.

So @rejj I’d say Ferrari needs some of Hamilton’s mellowness & composure (see 2021 season), not the other way around. He’s been just fine personality-wise as a veteran, and objectively speaking one of the greatest drivers to ever do it.

My biggest concern is his age. That reaction speed doesn’t improve with time, and I think his poor Quali performances of late were reflecting that.

I’ll make no defenses around Ferrari’s composure and behaviour. The team is perpetually its own worst enemy.

I tend to agree, but I cynically balance that with he’d reached a level of acceptance that he was never going to realistically challenge for a title win at modern Mercedes so he didn’t have the same pressure and attitude.

I, personally, do not agree with this. He has excelled at leading from the front, and struggled otherwise. Alonso’s radio “argh! this guy only knows how to drive from the front!” while battling with Hamilton comes to mind.

Absolutely – I don’t mean to exclude other drivers being anywhere from “whingy” to “complete arsehole” also. Lando’s petulance was particularly on display last year with his reactions towards team orders.

WEC season is also about to kick off, some nice looking hypercars this year

That’s understandable, as most criticisms that have to do with his actual driving, tend to use his time at Merc with a dominant car as evidence he can only win from the front. I still disagree, and don’t think anything Alonso says regarding Hamilton can be taken at face value; but at least it has to do with driving and objective performance measures, rather than subjective personality traits that don’t stand out as any worse than any other driver in the field.

In this day and age how would a broke person like myself keep up with sports like basketball, baseball, soccer, formula 1? Hunting streams on reddit? Only watching highlights? How do you all do it and how much does it cost?

I like watching sports quite a bit but never get too deep into them because I don’t have a way of watching consistently, only when someone else has an ESPN account or something. Thoughts?

The situation is getting pretty dire so a lot of people are going for a VPN nowadays. A good example for football/soccer is the Champions League which is broadcast for free on public Belgian TV.

Many apps will also change what you can access depending on your region of access. You could access pretty much any competition from a legit DAZN account as long as you switch from which “country” your VPN says you are currently accessing the app. I guess DAZN doesn’t mind either.

I have a friend in Germany for whom the subscription to his VPN + the subscription to his Egyptian (!) premium sports app cost him less in a year than legit subscriptions to the German service providing Bundesliga games + the German service providing Champions League would monthly.

I am much in favor of being as legit as possible, for those those can afford it, especially with games and entertainment in general: these are all luxuries, not necessities of life, some of the money goes back to the people producing these contents, and some of the legit money goes towards local taxes. But it is very hard convincing people to go legit with such wild discrepancies.

i pay for F1 TV since i had a friend of mine buy it through their roku device and it’s way cheaper to get a pro subscription through that. there are discord servers and subreddits that can supplement that need if you’d rather not cough up the cash
