RE4R is out next Friday. I’ve never really played horror games at all until recently, and suddenly I’m on a kick. I’ve heard so much about the quality of the original RE4 and I’m both excited and nervous to go into this remake blind. The reviews seem glowing and I’m looking forward to completely poisoning myself with cortisol. That is all.
the original was pretty intense but also real goofy and I expect the remake will be the same. Although, one review mentioned the merchant guy is less silly this time

This is awful news.
@“yeso”#p109159 It is less silly if we look at the demo but it's still goofy (I mean, you can parry a chainsaw, so).
I’m already psychologically dependent on the camp for just enough breathing space/separation from the panic, dread and besiegement I’m surely going to feel.
yeah for me it‘s having a sense of what kind of horror something is going to be. Don’t personally find even the “extreme” end of horror to be frightening, it‘s when you don’t really know where it‘s going to go that it gets unsettling imo. If there’s a tell either way: goofy or serious then the tension is gone

Great way to put it. Totally.
I'm not looking forward to next generation gore. RE 4 and 5 were kind of my limit, the graphics were of course crazy good for the time, but still low fidelity enough to not be so disturbing. RE 2 remake was over a line that made me less excited to play.
never really been a huge Resident Evil 4 Guy but boy is that remake nice and sweet. each gunshot feels so good. modernized just enough not to feel redundant and still very much in line with the OG‘s gameplay beats and such. sound design is on point. about 6 hours in and it’s already stuck into my mind has That Game I Want to Play Once I‘m Home which weirdly enough does not happen that often.
not as good as that 2019’s Resident Evil 2 though! that was a once in a generation lightning bolt. god I need to replay it
@“thebryanjzx90”#p109321 That’s really interesting. I think I have a similar line I don’t want to cross, with games like this but in VR.
I gotta ask, what kind of “horror” scares you? RE4 (and the remake, I reckon) aren‘t things that I would consider scary. At least, they don’t make me scared in the way that 1 and 2 make me scared.
Resident Evil 4 is an anxiety riddled thrill ride. It's more akin to a very old wooden roller coaster than, say, staying the night in an old victorian home that people say is haunted. The danger is very clear and present, and you are given all the tools to deal with that problem and are expected to. The older games and games like Silent Hill are about being weak and exposed and avoiding conflict whenever possible.
The roller coaster is exhilarating for me, the night in the spooky house is dreadful (in the good way?). Both are driven by fear, but one is more visceral, the other more cerebral, if that makes sense. I don’t consider the action horror of RE4 scary, but I understand how it could be too much for other people.

In 2023, the main character, a young man with the hairstyle and fashion sensibilities of a model, is named Leon.

After playing the opening last night, I see what everyone means. It honestly didn’t even feel like horror… more like ever-ratcheting suspense. And I loved it. What a blast.
I‘m in the early goings as well and having a good time. Afraid to say I think having a military grade steel knife break after 8-12 knife moves is obnoxious. Yes I know there are game mechanical reasons but it’s a little dumb all the same. Loving the gems. Totally captivated by collecting gems
Yeah just started chapter 3 and it’s a fun game. Cranking up the graphics actually isn’t doing as much for me as I thought it might. Game looks good obviously but the mood and atmosphere isn’t really leaps and bounds above the original imo
My partner has been watching me play it and she laughed out loud at me pausing the game in the middle of an encounter to fit my little gems into an ornate vase. The gems are good.
lol gems come first
