I was once struggling to open the bag so much that one of the grocery store workers came over and was like “here’s the secret” and then touched one of the moist surfaces in that vegetable shower fridge and then was able to use his wet fingers to open the bag immediately

You just gotta… pynch… on it

I often just give a little lick on one of my fingertips even though that’s unsanitary

Used to work at a produce store and helped people with bags all the time. They would try the “wet fingers” thing and sometimes even that wouldn’t work (particularly with older people.) I didn’t have a trick to make it easier; I just figured people would rather have me fumble around with it than do it themselves.

you need to pinch it like this and push/pull it along the edge between thumb and forefinger to pull it apart. Would never use saliva for this purpose even if it helps because that is antisocial behavior at the grocery store

The funny thing about produce section misters is that they’re only for looks and make everything rot quicker, so their only constructive use is to provide moisture without having to lick your fingers in public.

Pinching and sliding your fingers in opposite directions is a really helpful technique for opening small ziploc bags as well. An old coworker showed me this, probably when having to deal with the bags that SATA cables would come in or something like that.

Anyway since switching to reusable mesh produce bags I try to never bother with the plastic ones provided, unless they’re the biodegradable kind which I use for my compost.

The pinch method is the correct method. You also just don’t need the bags most of the time. I’ve conceded to bags for broccoli and brussel sprouts because it annoyed my partner, but me no likey single use plastics.

I don’t really know why you’re supposed to use the produce bags I just do it because everyone else does.

if you’re buying many of the same thing, and they’re sold by weight, it would be cumbersome not to.

That makes a lot of sense! I’m not usually buying bulk produce and if I am it’s pre-packaged in some way (like a 5 pound bag of potatoes, a bag of onions, bag of apples, etc.), so I never thought about them being used to group items together. Now I feel downright silly for putting single items of produce in the bag.

My daughter brought home a graphic novel about Pompeii. It was part of this series: The I SURVIVED Series | Lauren Tarshis

Here are a few OTHER titles I found while we were looking…

So. Yeah.

You may get a similar kick out of penguins “what was” series of children’s books

Fwiw I think these books are actually pretty thoughtful and a great way for kids to learn about these things. Just a funny graphic design choice they’ve decided to stick with.

My kids also like those books. The Pompeii one was great. I have no doubt that all the others are respectful and thoughtful. Just a weird thing to see at the book fair, lol.
