Show me things you made.

Yo… that’s your pixel art??

Did you automatically assume that Death_Strandicoot’s forum avatar was from some professionally produced indie game that you didn’t recognize before you knew it was their own art, just because of how good it looks?

Also lmao @ a Cowboy Indian (I, personally, as a representative of the indigenous community, give you permission to crack a joke about how she’s not that kind of Indian)

It’s a surprise, even to me!

But truly, thank you for the compliments. I spent a lot of time on the artwork I’m showing (uh, maybe too, too long), and though I said I hadn’t shown any of it to anyone, I did sneak that little bit into my avatar.

I promise, I really haven’t shown off anything else anywhere other than Insert Credit Forums.

So…anyone with programming talent (or potential) impressed enough to want to help me get this nonsense into people’s hands?

Ooh, currently a 3-way tie in the poll. Do you think this means you get all 3?

Well, I considered casting a tie-breaking vote…

I’m extremely nervous to show this much at once, especially the writing, but I’m prepared to present a little bit of everything.

Phew

More buildings!:

Ambidex lives in a tiny, capsule-like apartment, in a bad part of town. The building has seen better days.
Apartments

I’d like to see a neat animation.:
For narrative reasons, Ambidex sometimes appears as a strange, spectral skeleton, with a beating heart in his ribcage. In this run animation, you can see his heartbeat trailing behind him, like a floating, ghostly EKG.
ambi-run

Show me another character, please.:
This is Willie. He is into PDE-5 inhibitors (viagra, cialis, etc.) and any other sexual performance enhancers.

Willie is Ambidex’s maternal uncle, and his only family. Willie raised Ambidex, who was orphaned at a very young age.

While Willie is perpetually single, his entendres never are. Willie is a smart-ass, and refuses to miss an opportunity for a good joke, particularly a dirty one.

He’s also dead when the story begins. He remains dead throughout. However, Ambidex misses his beloved father-figure and dreams of him often.
willie

Can I see a sample of the writing?:

Hoo boy. Okay. I’ve included my current draft the beginning of the main story. This 42-page excerpt contains the prologue and first day (the story takes place over about a week). In my mind, this is how far a playable demo would go.

Notes are welcome. Bug reports (typos, grammatical errors) are also welcome. I’m sure there are plenty, as I am pretty bad at proof-reading my own words.

Content warning:
This script contains adult themes and situations. It also contains at least 9 dick jokes.

[Writing sample removed - DM me if you really want to see it]

Does the game have a name? How about a logo?:
The title and logo are included in the writing sample above. The game is called Life Succinate (pronounced *suck-sin-ate). The first two syllables are “Life Sucks”.

Succinate (succinic acid) is ionically bonded to some drugs (notably metoprolol) to cause them to become bioavailable more slowly. This is sometimes referred to as “extended release”. Perhaps life, too, may be extended through a similar process? I mean, no. But in this silly little cartoon world…maybe?

<gulp>

does she have a gun in the game?

Yea, it’s her heavy “punch” — Just one of those melee fighting game characters who has a gun.

My time so far at these forums rekindled my creative passions. It’s fun and inspiring to see everybody be creative in their own ways in all the different threads!

So I decided to make a website to act as a home for my creative output in the future. It’s a very minimalist design which is partially a deliberate choice and partially because going for anything much more visually ambitious is currently not within reach of my visual design skills.

Currently there are a home and about page as well as a first blog post which is quite navelgaze-y so read at your own risk!

I finished up production on my second little risograph booklet of made-up myths and legends a couple of weeks ago and sent everything off to my friend in Berkley to print and assemble. Feels good to wrap on a big personal project and add a second entry to the series.

This was one of the last entries I came up with and it might be one of my favorites of this batch.

Here’s the accompanying music track from the playlist I put together for the book, too:
Finger Pies (Maral at the Controls Dub Remix) - Anika, Maral

I thought it might be fun to print up some of these business cards to slip into a few of the books, too.

I made those ceramic objects ages ago. Anything I make is both liked and disliked in equal measure. I grew up in a fundamentalist apocalypse cult and secretly on Joel Peter Witkin so I suppose that’s to be expected.

I also am working on a website to host all my creative endeavors! You can find some of my drawings, games I’ve worked on and music I’ve made.

Waaaay back in the Web 1.0 days as a wee lad, I learned a bit of HTML and I dug all that knowledge back up and freshened it up a bit. I’ve been really enjoying building my site through looking at a bunch of colored text on a page rather than a slow and clunky website builder. It’s a lot more work, but you’re granted a lot more freedom and it’s super rewarding to come up with an idea and successfully cobble it together and see it working.

Your site looks great! Love the Web 1.0 vibes which brings me straight back to my site building roots.

I have to say neocities is such a godsend in our current day and age. An oasis of calm in the current corporate hellscape that is the internet! I hope they survive for a very long time.

Love your picoCAD work and the spaceman drawings! I’m super interested in getting reasonably good at some form of visual art but so far things haven’t clicked for me. Maybe I’ll have a look at picoCAD!

Also what I found as I built my site: CSS has gotten so much better since the Web 1.0 days! You can do with flexbox and mediaqueries what would’ve taken incredible amounts of work and a whole lot of JavaScript to achieve back then.

I do find these unnerving so you have achieved your goal!

@milo good website!! I need to get a little animated gif for your webring

it’s a gift.

I took part in a cool little collective project y’all might dig called Japanese PixelArt Cityscape, where folks are drawing their own 8-bit building (using a specific palette and certain size restrictions) and adding them to one long street (check the website for the entire street so far!).

I turned in my first building yesterday called Mini Kimagure:

Here’s what it looks like via a real-time CRT filter in Unity:

Bit of back story: I’ve never been to Japan (lack of time n’ money), so I sometimes “walk it” via Google Maps. I have a few other building ideas in mind, but I wanted my first one to be based off of something that actually exists, so while virtually strolling through the Taito City district of Tokyo trying to get a feel for what the architecture is like (in a word or two: amazingly eclectic!), I bumped into this place:

It’s a bar (?) called Kimagure Eriko. You can “visit” it here:

Reviews and pictures of the inside make it seem like a cool place. So I very loosely based the bottom floor of my 8-bit building off of it. Now I have a bar I need to check out if I ever hit Tokyo. :P
