First big snow here in Saskatoon on Tuesday! Got my first taste of winter driving, digging cars out of the parking lot, shoveling driveways, all that good stuff. I’m having a blast! We got studded winter tires so I can just rip around in my Nissan Versa no problem.
Check this out! Snow just hanging off the roof of our building. One thing that’s majorly surprised me is the combination of snow and big wind. Our parking lot is sandwiched in between three buildings, so it creates a weird wind tunnel that causes the snow to fall very unevenly. Some cars were covered, and some were totally clear. The wind had blown all the snow into the back of our car and made a mound, so I had to dig myself out in the morning. AND, when I got home from work our space was a big snow drift, while most other spaces were fine.
Layering clothes is key to enjoying winter weather. Sometimes I like to put on 3-4 layers during brutally cold days and take a short walk just to experience it. The coldest I’ve done is -10 with a windchill of -30. It is like being on a different planet.
if you want to get out of the city at some point and do some great lakes wintertime stuff snowshoeing up in Michigan is a good time. You need to be sure you have the right winter attire to be safe of course but it’s pretty easy to find an off-season hotel or BnB in one of the resort towns on the lake Michigan coast and many of the state parks will rent the actual snowshoes. Ludington SP is pretty nice and not too far away. It’s super tranquil, good for wildlife viewing, deer frolicking around etc
I have lived in the Midwest my whole life unfortunately, and I’ve always had pretty bad seasonal affective disorder. It’s actually been a little more manageable the past few years, but during that time, I’ve also become way more heat sensitive…
My son likes throwing snowballs at me though so that’s fun.
It snowed today!! It snowed a LOT. I haven’t checked to see if it stayed on the ground but it’s cold enough and it’s supposed to continue overnight. I would have taken a pic but I was entertaining a guest and didn’t think of it!!
It’s finally dropped to the 30s here in NYC (briefly at least), and we had some nice scant flurries this morning.
I’ve always found the darkness more difficult than the cold. Layers and modern clothing tech, as well as that I’m almost always on my bike when outside, all keep me plenty warm. Plus it’s cool how your body acclimates. I’ll start the cold season covered up, then by Feb Im cruising around in sweats.
I recommend keeping to your routine as much as possible, and don’t let the dark/cold be the main reason you choose not to do something.
I just embrace it all. Starts as a challenge and ends up as a spiritually refreshing time.
Also, the sunrise skies in winter are their own special kind of beauty.
We subsequently got about 15cm of snow, which has stuck around, and then the temperature dropped to the mid -20’s. But then today, I woke up to it being +6, and much of the surface snow melted, BUT it’s supposed to drop back below 0 this afternoon, and snow steadily for the next two days. BUT BUT, then we’re supposed to have temps fluctuating above and below freezing for the next week. So who knows what we’ll end up with by the time that’s all done.
As far as me and the darkness of winter goes, I’m sure it gets to me at some point without me realizing, but I’ve also enjoyed the cold and the dark for most of my life, so I don’t know that it bothers me as much as it does some folks. It sure doesn’t feel as though it does, but it’s also difficult to gauge one’s own mood sometimes.
zero snow in Chicago just cold and windy (aka December). But I saw western MI on a weather map of where heavy lake effect was expected so maybe that’s what it was
My window ac makes a terrible fart-like sound every time it gets hit by a gust of wind (so, always). Considering wearing ear plugs to bed but then: how do I wake up to my alarm? Opening the window next to it does help redirecting the flow but then: cold wind in my bedroom.
