Show me stairs in games, and characters taking them—in whatever way they please.
That staircase in the Zelda video is the first time I remember thinking about 3D animation in games as I spent several minutes walking up and down the stairs observing the inverse kinematics. Now, in every game I play, I check if they added that or just stick to the unaltered run cycle.
The most famous staircase in gaming:
wahoo
Great thread title!
I think for me it might have actually been SotC! There it’s used pretty extensively
(From this reddit post.)
Also the first time I can remember seeing convincing motion blur in a video game.
Some stairs:
Ninja gaiden 2
Dark Souls
The hidden stairs in the opening of Symphony of the Night
The final staircase in Subspace Emissary (Brawl)
I think my favorite is sliding up stairs in Castlevania 64 or doing the backwards moonwalk up the stairs in Castlevania 4.
Rolling up stairs in mgs3 as well.
Best thing to do with stairs is jump right past 'em
I’m pretty sure the player animation is fully procedural in this game! That’s why it looks so floppy. It’s really cool how adaptive it is because of that. Other Team Ico games handle it the same way, too.
IK is procedural is it not?
1000% yes
its a 2D staircase unlike the usual 1D staircase
maybe someday we will have a 3D staircase.
Leap o’ faith
No joke, this sequence is why FFVII is a classic.
