a note from my org file:

billiards but it’s a platformer

wow, what does that mean?

The closest I got for “what is the ‘billiards but it’s a platformer’ of videogames” is

but that’s really more like golf but a platformer

to kind of riff with my past self, i would imagine i’d mean the game would have the mechanics of a platformer but with something of the structure of billiards. so, runny jumpy, time your movements right to navigate a clockwork world.

the big thing of billiards, to me, is that it’s about chain reactions. interactions to interactions and so on.

so then, maybe what i meant is something like this:

you play as 8 marios, but 1 at a time. you move mario A until you’re satisfied (or whatever), then you move mario B, but you do so in the same timeframe as mario A moved, and you repeat that for each mario. marios interact in ways, and you use them in concert to save all the flickies. the ninth mario is luigi and if you need to use him it’s a stain on your record.

or something like that.

pasquinelli have you ever considered writing a substack or a newsletter or anything? your worldview is fascinating and refreshing and i always enjoy your posts the most.

ps - you should go ahead and join that baseball team and tell us about it.

Based on your Mario example it almost sounds like you described Lemmings, which is what I thought of when you said billiards.

There are some puzzle rooms in Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown that do pretty much what you describe. (I think you only get only 3 Princes at most, and time limits to make your plans) They are very interesting puzzles and the best and most challenging part of the game. An entire game like that would rule.

oh yeah, now that’s billiards but it’s a platformer!

I really liked the lost crown. I usually don’t cotton much to the games that focus on smooth traversal but it turned out to be one of my favorites.

The game just feels so good to control! I didn’t think a metroidvania character could feel better than Samus in Metroid Dread, but Sargon, amazingly, feels considerably better! The Rayman Legends team continues to amaze.

A shortcut to making something interesting is to just make what you want but do it with tools that are really not suited for the job.

The chain chomp of Bob-omb battlefield in Mario 64 is another example of Nintendo copying king’s field. They copied the giant squid at the start of kings field ii.

The only wedding I’ve ever been to was mine own, so I can safely say i love weddings.

I’ve been to a lot of weddings actually–I worked as a banquet bartender for a year or two, so I was at about wedding a fortnight (fortnite) for a while. Even a mediocre wedding is a pretty nice time, and a great wedding is a wonderful time.

@Gaagaagiins I used to work for a stint as a caterer in Chicago and yea, same experience, it was a nice time, some interesting venues and everyone was generally in a great mood. It was fun seeing dynamics of different families. Glimpsed the lives of some crazy wealth, don’t think I would’ve done too well in the long run, though
