As if the market news wasn’t bad enough already this week, now we get this dropped on us

A forum like from me means a lot, but I don’t carry much water ‘round here.

“oh no officer, i might have confused two stories from mythology but i swear i did not romance a monkey”

I appreciate every like I receive from each and every one of you, but I especially want to single out IC’s Sokoban-enjoying hype squad @NoJoTo and @Bbtone for being fountains of encouragement over the years, emboldening me to keep posting even when my game might have been severely off.

genuinely, i’ve never noticed your posting game being “off”
if anything, my posting game is more often off than not!

I like to like because I don’t like to write.

Hitting the like button costs nothing, but to the right person it could mean everything

My most formative message board years were on Something Awful (2003 regdate :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: ) and it doesn’t have a like system so over the last couple years being around here I’m still not entirely sure the purpose apart from like, expressing agreement. Over on SA if someone felt strongly enough but didn’t have anything to add one just “empty quotes”

yeah, i used to feel the same about likes. used to worry i was liking too much and it was stressing everyone out and ruining the forums.

Why would liking too much stress anyone out? Genuinely interested in this POV.

I’ve made it clear that I like smashing that like button, but it’s never pro-forma
.i genuinely appreciate everyone’s perspective.

it sends a notification, so it’s kind of like knocking on someone’s door. i took, like, a year off of the forums because my notification number got too high and i couldn’t face it.

i could easily believe it’s just a me thing.

I’m totally with you on this! For like, the same reason. This is going to maybe sound insanely like, overthinking everything sort of train of thought here and I wouldn’t begrudge anyone being like “girl chill it’s just a like button” but i have half a mind to trace the original sin of what’s blossomed into the enshittification of the internet brought on by algo based social media at the feet of the like button

It doesn’t do anything except make users optimize towards a certain type of thing that makes the number go up and fire their brain chemicals, and i think it’s harmful

not saying that’s happening on IC–but certainly on Reddit and most other online places. We optimize our behavior towards what’s measured.

And before it was likes it was post counts on forums, but at least inflating one’s post count required actually posting

there is definitely something to be said there. i don’t think it’s overthinking, but i also don’t know the solution to it.

FYI for everyone - you can turn notifications off for likes. i recommend!
