The 2021 Insert & Credit Cinéaste Spectacular

@Gaagaagiins No offense taken, it was the same worry which drove me to do the poll first. It’s going to be like you said, mostly unique picks with a collective list of 10 or so, but there will be interesting ways to frame the data—your suggestion about IC-recommended flicks would be interesting and not too difficult! Something I thought of which would be too difficult but which I’d be curious to know: write the age you were when you first saw (or first enjoyed) each movie.

In bold are the movies I put on my list which I watched because of these forums! The number or phrase after them is my best recollection of the age I was when I watched it first.

@Gaagaagiins when I write it all out like this I’m thinking I ought to have more stuff on here for which my appreciation can’t be somehow ascribed to nostalgia, but I’m at an age where if you wanted to you could say it’s all either nostalgia or recency bias @captain

No IC picks on my list (yet) although some of the best movies I’ve seen this year were heavily inspired by the talk in these hallowed halls (Passion de Jeanne d’Arc, PATLABOR)

I thought of ten films, looked up their release dates and sorted them by year of release. Here they are:

Robin Hood (animated) (1973)
Apocalypse Now (theatrical) (1979)
Alien (1979)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
The Thing (1982)
Repo Man (1984)
Hellraiser (1987)
Blade Runner (Director’s Cut) (1992)
The Act of Killing (2012)
One Cut of the Dead / カメラを止めるな! (2017)

Undoubtably, no more than 30 seconds after I click “Post Reply” I will think of five others I wish I had included instead, but so be it. I make no claim that these are my ten favourites! But these sure are ten films, and I like them. They probably display some of my tastes and preferences, and surely omit many others.

This is a pretty “basic” list compared to many of the other cinephile collections presented here, but that means it also will probably end up being somewhat iconoclastic in a roundabout way!
(regarding Blade Runner – I will probably admit that the Final Cut is better but I think I like the Director’s Cut more. I’ve certainly seen it considerably more times, at least)

even if there are too many single vote entries to put together a ranked list, an unranked collection of favorite films is valuable too I think

@fridgeboy you may be aware of this, I have no idea if you voted in the pre-poll poll, but in case you have not seen it during your video production schedule/life we would love you to post

@captain I am here! I have been summoned! I would like to post more as well - and should be able to now! The semester is just finishing up and it was a really hellacious one. I’m looking forward to hanging a bit more in cool places like this. Now I just have to figure out what this thread’s all about.

Alright gonna shoot from the hip a bit on this one

The Host (bong joon-ho, 2006)
Children of men (2006)
Inside man (2006)
Things to come (1936, the criterion collection one)
Salaam cinema (1995, Makhmalbaf)
Ten (2002, kiarostami)
Born in flames (1983, criterion one)
The battle of Algiers (1966, criterion one)
A girl walks home alone at night (2014)
Andrei rublev (1966, criterion)

There are a couple comedies I wish I could’ve put on. I hate overly serious lists and yet.… anyways, saved, Orange County and 10 things I hate about you missed the cut. I love that sort of early 00s era of comedy. My cousin vinny was another comedy contender.

Heat, safe, and the discrete charm of the bourgeoisie also didn’t make it and I wish I could’ve put them.

My biggest regret is not putting any Asghar Farhadi on… he had an incredible run over the last decade or so

let’s say… hypothetically… you were to pick one

@captain part of the problem is I haven’t seen all of them yet, but also I think this is the problem with him… how do you pick between like a separation, about elly, and the salesman? Impossible!

@Chris_v Huge fan of A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night here! I honestly remembered this movie after making my list and somewhat regretted omitting it. I’ve only seen it once, but I’ve wanted to revisit it recently. I think it would fit in with my criterion of trying to include movies that are entirely singular experiences to me that I could scarcely compare to anything else I’m familiar with. I also love that they use a White Lies song so impactfully

Oh my–only 10?! Here goes (in no particular order):

  • Ash is the Purest White (dir. by Jia Zhanke–all his films are fantastic, but I’d argue this one is a fitting summation of his style and ideas and is also my favorite.)
  • Under the Skin (dir. by Jonathan Glazer–leaving the theater after watching this was probably the most disoriented I’d ever felt after seeing a movie; I loved it.)
  • Volver (dir. by Pedro Almodovar–I could have picked any Almodovar film, so I picked this one.)
  • The Big Lebowski (dir. by the Coen Brothers–what else is there to say?)
  • Point Break (dir. by Kathryn Bigelow–maybe the only action movie I actually loved.)
  • Paris, Texas (dir. by Wim Wenders–I used to watch this film every year on my birthday! I think I’m in a better place now. Still love it.)
  • Yi Yi (dir. by Edward Yang–probably actually my favorite movie of all time.)
  • Hard to be a God (dir. by Aleksei German–I watched a bootleg version of this on YouTube before it came out in NA and it was the best three hours I’ve ever spent on the internet.)
  • Annihilation (dir. by Alex Garland–what can I say? I lived in Tallahassee for five years; this movie is supposed to kind of take place near Tallahassee; it hit close to home)
  • Gosford Park (dir. by Robert Altman–I could watch this movie maybe every day of the week for at least one week a year.)

@theo I would have liked (and still would like) to see Under the Skin in the theater

Yi Yi! I saw that for the first time this year and enjoyed it very much

@captain Ahh, it was so good! I had no idea what to expect from Under the Skin, as I just went in to see all the new movies at the local independent cinema during that time (this was in Nashville, TN–I highly recommend anyone passing through there to check out the Belcourt Theater). Glazer’s earlier film, Sexy Beast, is real good, too, even though I have no idea what the characters are saying half the time.

And if you like Yi Yi and haven’t yet seen Yang’s A Brighter Summer Day, that one is worth checking out too when you have 4 hours to spare.

I always have 4 hours to spare for ed yang

@theo indeed, it is near the top of my list, and I have been awaiting a [brighter summer] day when I may watch it on a nice TV instead of my current not-so-nice one (though Yi Yi looked surprisingly good on my 19" CRT…)

The stupid thing about Under the Skin is I had a perfectly good opportunity to see it in a theater—I just didn’t feel like it! For two or three weeks!

my movie posts are going here to bump the thread

Saw The Red Shoes two days ago. Suffices to say the photography is beyond impressive and the ballet sequence in the middle is the highlight—I have no idea how they pulled off some of those effects and you won’t either—though I was pretty much over the story after that. It’s not this movie’s fault that others have shamelessly copied its structure, character relationships, & themes, but coming of age and watching movies in the 2010s means I’ve seen (lesser versions of) this story a couple times already, though this had a slight variation on the ending, in which the leading lady’s husband—I guess standing in for society at large—pulls a jerk move and forces her to choose between him or her passion for dance. I sound too negative now—it’s worth watching, the full Red Shoes performance alone is worth the price of admission! See it on a screen 40 inches or larger

Also saw Only Yesterday again, that movie rocks. Good choice BluntForceMama
