The 2025 Video Game News Thread (I was forced by anti-innovation communists to change the title again)

Agreed. I’ve been playing a lot of the 1987 arcade game - which I am pretty bad at. What happened to all the Rolling Thunder-alikes?

They both look very good to me. There’s room for two throwback ninja-Metroidvanias on my hard drive.

I trust Lizard Cube implicitly. Wonderboy is the most well done remaster I’ve played and Streets of Rage 4 is the best beat 'em up game.

I’m down for two side scrolling ninja action games. I have enough room in my heart for multiple ninjas.

There isn’t a bad Streets of Rage game, but 4 just brings so much to the genre - and has all of the different versions of the characters to play as. The SoR3 cast is much fun to combo with.

Just catching up, aside from Shinobi, the only thing that looked particularly interesting was Blue Prince, a blueprint puzzle game.

Also – why is Sega releasing a Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed game with such a bad roster? I thought the whole appeal to sonic racing games was that you could play as Ryo or Ulala or Danika Patrick.

I saw Q Games of pixeljunk fame announced something but uh… seems to weirdly justify violence from this initial announcement

dont wanna be too judgemental I guess but I get why folks weren’t highlighting this as The Game To Look Out For from this state of play
disappointing

I suspect there’s a 50-50 chance it ends with a Braid style rewind, showing you the new perspective that maybe violence is bad after all (though I don’t know anything about Q Games so maybe it won’t)

I think the logo for that game is really funny. Like a “frutiger-aero” counter strike.

I have liked all their games up to this point but this is very unlike everything they’ve done

I would like the idea a lot more if it didn’t use modern realistic military imagery to demonstrate this idea!

just epic mickey those voxels!!!

It makes me feel extra cynical to say this, but boy, it seems like a real tough gig to announce new IP or things which aren’t connected to any other things even during a streaming event that is explicitly supposed to be for revealing new stuff. All you do is just piss off the hogs who are lining up at the trough for the next meal of Franchise Slop.

Even the Insert Credit Forums, the place you’d expect to see the most generosity towards this kind of thing, reacted coolly to it (just to be clear as well, I don’t exclude myself, I only caught the tail end of the stream but couldn’t have cared less about most of it).

I am trying to even just understand why I reacted that way and what the solution might be. Should streams for New Stuff and Slop Trough Refills be carefully segregated? What about the Slop Trough Refill is appealing (because it is appealing whether we want to admit it or not), is there a principled reason to want to see updates on projects coming out of pre-existing creative through lines? Was the problem that there was just not a good balance of brand new stuff vs. franchise slop?

I felt weird myself realizing that, among what I was able to catch, what I thought looked most interesting was… ugh… Housemarque’s new game, which showed more than a little signs of being, at the very least, some kind of spiritual successor to Returnal, a game I thought was cool if not ultimately too fulfilling. Why was it that the main thing that seemed exciting was that it would be like Returnal? Have we as gamers become incapable of being interested in something genuinely new?

Or maybe the problem was that what was “new” wasn’t exactly “new.” What was showed off that looked new just looked kind of derivative of other stuff… the name escapes me but not unlike the Live Youtube chat, all I could think about when watching that one game was that it looked like Grand Theft Auto 2077. Yes… perhaps it’s the developers who are wrong, and the unestablished IP was just too derivative or uninteresting. There was quite a bit of gritty, moody sci-fi lookin stuff with motherfuckers in stillsuit-esque lookin things… games that I would reckon heated up their pre-production not long after Dune: Part One, maybe.

And yet I still gotta admit to myself that I think the whole thing probably woulda hit a whole lot harder with a new Death Stranding 2 teaser… just gotta reiterate that when I call it a Slop Trough I’m not saying I am not among the hogs.

I will wager a Double Bubble that I’ve just pre-empted a lot of the overall tenor and thrust of this week’s Delayed Input, which will upload probably at some point today

violence against clowns. will NOT be playing this.

I’m not going to be playing this game either way, but this is a staggering development

To be honest, this is the only game I liked from the whole conference.
Also, very tiring to find almost all games are copies or amalgamations of several games (specially the Chinese ones).

I don’t think this is an issue of original IP, I just think most every original IP on display was mediocre and this forum as a whole is so gaming literate that we can properly profile a game given 30-60 seconds of game play footage. Most every Insert Crediter is so versed in gaming they’re out here reading gameplay trailers like Tom Brady reading a pre-snap defense. We’ve seen it all before. I know for me I can pretty well palpate the entire feel of a game in my mind just by watching a bit of gameplay footage. My two favorite games of last year were original IPs and I could easily tell before touching them that they would be extremely good.

Yeah, you’re definitely right. If anything it would be annoyingly contrarian of us to pretend we were engaged just on principle because it presents an alternative to Franchise Slop.
