The 2025 Video Game News Thread (I was forced by anti-innovation communists to change the title again)

long-anticipated by fans of visuals novels and company-level small arms WWII tactics games Burden of Command finally has a release date (4/8)

i lol’d because i have never played a game where a company hates its fanbase more than Pokemon Go. I only keep logging in because it provides an excuse to hang out with folks.

i would also love to receive a dump truck of money to offload my biggest headache.

The more I see Disco Elysium-like games, the more I wish people would try to replicate it.
(I think the closest I feel people have understood the game is Citizen Sleeper)

It’s 2030. You overhear a 15 year old call an RPG a Disco-like.

That RPG? Planescape Torment.

I’m not confident any of the post-disco elysiums will actually be completed tbh

I played their previous game “Don’t Drown”. It was alright without really reaching the heights of the Don’t Escape games that inspired it.

This one looks neat. But I find these adventure/time management hybrids to be quite fragile to any sort of deviation form the intended path.

yeah would be fun if they can pull off the mechanics, but cool stuff to read and look at is enough for me at least

Finally, there is a version of Disco Elysium for Tik-Tokkers.

I might be invested into looking at it to see how rotten this might actually be.

I got curious so I looked it up—disco elysium sold somewhere between 2-3 million copies. Perhaps I don’t understand the economics of game development but I was expecting that number to be a lot higher given how everyone is trying to chase the bag.

that’s mid to high 8 figures in revenue vs an indie game budget

a success for sure, but I’m assuming starting up a new studio requires a lot of up front capital. If that’s the type of return investors expect, great! I was just thinking the number to be something like 7 or 8 million but maybe that’s just me being silly.

I suppose all the positioning and competition is among other 50-person studios with investment funding also hoping to ensure another $80,000,000 or so pay day. Seems a motivating factor

I guess that’s quite a bit of money when you bust the calculator out like that…
