The 2025 Video Game News Thread (I was forced by anti-innovation communists to change the title again)

not sure if anyone has posted this before, but a short interview in nyt with the writer of 80 days, highland song, and heaven’s vault wherein he talks a little shit on disco elysium and said the last good game he played is a pc adventure game from 1997

I think he’s right that DE is a bit overwritten and something of a big fish in a small pond. I also agree that The Last Express is a GOAT game. But I also think we can easily out-snob this guy gene wolfe good not great sorry

I’m torn between a rational response (“ok, that’s a bit much,” etc.) and a quietly-whispered hell yeah

(although really I do generally disagree with the POV here that seems to put narrative quality as the only defining metric of a “good game”)

I’m starting to think that calling Gene Wolfe your favorite author is the same kind of yellow flag as calling Christopher Nolan your favorite director.

Kidding, kidding! Mostly. I just think there’s a sort of puzzle-box connection between the two - I’m slowly digging into Wolfe and it seems like his writing also caters to a kind of “oh hey neat puzzle to solve” impulse that some of Nolan’s stuff does in a different way.

Which, if I’m being honest, is what got me started reading him. I do love a puzzle.

I totally missed this so I reckon others did too: Konami is doing everyone a solid and re-releasing Ninja Five-O digitally on everything but Xbox next month

Wow! Just played that for the first time a few months ago, instantly became a top GBA game for me. What a coincidence. Absolutely my favorite grapple hook in video games (because Umihara Kawase is actually using a fishing pole…!!) Love to see a weirder quieter one like this come back

Dokapon! Sword of Fury came out today. I picked it up immediately. It is:

  • $20 (cheap!)
  • English translation with toggleable JP/EN voice acting
  • Includes online multiplayer
  • Includes some nice QOL features like built-in fast forward and a bunch of difficulty toggles and stuff
  • Has some nice graphical options. You can pick smoothed out upscaled art or original pixel art. There are shading options for the models. It’s got button icons for all the big controller layouts, which is super nice to have.
  • Works well out of the box on Steam Deck

It’s a surprisingly thorough remaster for a very reasonable price. Nintendo could never.

If Void Stranger’s dialogue were written by Gene Wolfe it would be better for it.

Wolfe is a better author than Nolan is a filmmaker.

These are my statements.

Dear mods,

This post does not include news.

Please break this post into 4 parts and move each respective bit into WARP ZONE Game Club - Void Stranger, the mortal enemy of videogames, Movies Talk, and Tell me anything .

I have thoughts about Gene Wolfe, as well as Jon Ingold’s oeuvre, but in the interest of video game news reporting: The kickstarter for Mashina goes live today!

14k seems like a ridiculously low budget with which to make a game. I suppose they are using company money as well?

they are very scrappy people! both have been making games by themselves for a long time, I’m sure they can pull it off. Judero got some well deserved praise so hopefully they got some funds from that as well. One of my faves is Talha Kaya’s Sleepy Time, a guitar hero style game about masturbation with a great original soundtrack. truly a staple of what a great small indie game can be like.

Oh for sure! To be clear, I’m not suspicious of the kickstarter, I just figured they’d need/should have more money for such a cool project.

hopefully they will! looks like it’s going pretty well for day one :D

What an absolute shame. Here’s the post from Maddy Thorson:

It’s sad, but it sounds like it was for the best. I hope everything works out in the end.
