@Kez#10699 One of my projects of the last decade has been getting everything together to play 4 Swords Adventures on 5 Gamecubes and 5 TVs. I finally get everything together and having everyone in the same room is put on hiatus for the foreseeable future. One day!
@robinhoodie#10715 Oh man that's the dream! You could also try FF Crystal Chronicles with that setup! We were eyeing that up as a future game but it seems pretty drawn out. Normally we only meet for a few hours a week.
@Kez#10724 For sure. I also have the GBA players, so its good to go for the original 4 Swords, and it looks like Shinning Soul 2 as far as 4 player co-op goes. I dunno, maybe even get some link up Fortified Zone in there to feel like it is 1991 again. Another big consideration in the build was making a more modern friendly way to play 2 player Gameboy Tetris, even though that is not co-op.
Aw man that is an awesome idea.
They should bring The Four Swords back. That shit ruled.
@robinhoodie#10712
ta-da!
@bankbank#10734 YESSSSS!
btw this was like a $10 build. usb joystick PCB kit+box+50?44?mm button. knife heated on stove to cut the box plastic. box is sold as a “project enclosure”.
@exodus#4503 bump for valentine‘s day. will go back and look through this thread but wondering if anybody’s got more recommendations for “best games for couples”!
@tombo#16939 If I didn't say it already: Snipper Clips.
I always think about this blurb from the manual (remember those?) for Oni, how its a singleplayer game but bring a friend if you want.
>
Oni is a one-player game. It's just you, on your own, matching wits and blows with the Syndicate. If you like, you can recruit a friend to be your own real-life Shinatama – hang out, watch you play, offer advice, maybe even bring you cookies and other foodstuffs of dubious nutritional value.
That lodged in my brain like 20 years ago and it's not coming out. I think it's cute they put that in there.
heave ho is a ton of fun, but 15 tons of fun co-op. a problem with co-op is how it can breed resentment between teammates, but failing is half the fun of heave ho.
@Blrb#16955
Literally saw this thread float up the top and though "huh, I wonder if anyone said Snipper Clips yet..."
I've had an absolute riot playing 2 player puzzles with my 7 and 8 year old kids. It allows for diverse skill levels really well, just as long as everyone is _trying_ to engage with the puzzles properly. Once you figure out what you're supposed to do on any given puzzle, there's always a mechanically 'easier' and 'harder' job, so you can trying swapping jobs if one of you doesn't quite have the dexterity for a particularly tricky cut or throw or whatever.
The kids love Kirby Star Allies too and they have played the godddarn wheels off that thing in coop.
The latest discovery I‘ve made that really thrilled my quarantine pal is DKC: Tropical Freeze. I rarely enjoy platformers, but this one impressed me. Never seen a game in this style so thoroughly exploit the fluidity of 60fps movement in its animation and game design. Stages are crammed with overlapping mini-challenges that make you think carefully about the genre-standard risk vs. reward dynamics (e.g. going for a precariously placed, potentially 1UP-granting collectible vs. running for the next checkpoint) and take calculated bets on your own skill level. Art direction and music are as endearing as the Rare DKC titles, but the actual game design is so much better. The co-op is great with a partner who’s big on steep skill-based challenges - although there are parts where the game becomes easier if P1 (always Donkey Kong) grabs P2 (choice of Diddy, Dixie or Cranky) to exploit their unique jump abilities, yet this takes away P2’s agency. Still a great 2-player experience, if not as casual-friendly as the co-op Marios.
Speaking of which, I’m double dipping for _Mario 3D World_ on Switch. I have the Wii U version, but online multiplayer, increased game speed, the ability to play it with my old Gamecube controllers, and what sounds like a substantial new _Mario Odyssey_-esque game mode are just enough to make me buy it again. As a co-op experience, that one’s pretty much evergreen and very friendly to all skill levels. Actually kind of sucks they haven’t made another multiplayer 3D Mario since!!
@2501#17098 I heard you can unlock 16 player Luigi Odyssey Bros. If you bury your switch for 26 years in animal crossing then boot Odyssey.
**** 4-PLAYER CO-OP RECOMMENDATION NEEDED ****
my partner, sister, brother-in-law and i have put about 15 hours into a divinity 2 co-op campaign and i'm kinda at the end of my rope with it. my partner and sis are pretty much novices when it comes to mechanically intensive stuff like this so the battles take ages and also at least once a battle one of us (including me) will walk three steps forward and attack the ground instead of the enemy. all of us just walk off in different directions, it's hard to find each other, i don't know what's going on in the plot, my bro-in-law is constantly trying to steal and getting caught which leads to him killing all of the NPCs. nearly everyone in fort joy is dead
anyway we finally made it out of fort joy. i was hoping things would start to open up but they haven't really
does anyone recommend borderlands for this kind of setup (2 HARDcore gamer's + 2 novices)? i suggested trying minecraft but my bro-in-law rejected me :(
also thought about diablo 3 but i read only one person can use the menu at a time which i'm pretty sure would drive me nuts. is it similar to divinity? more streamlined? maybe monster hunter world?
they have a PS4 and a switch; we have a PS5, switch and switch lite. the problem we keep running into is that not many games support 4-player co-op via a combination of local and online co-op
@“tapevulture”#p57884 If platformers are an option give Spelunky 2 a shot. You can play it local or online. It‘s a tough game, but you can revive others that die at various points and you can, quite literally, carry your friends to victory. When a player dies they turn into a ghost that can help (or harm) the cause, so less skilled players have something to do when they’re dead.
@“Herb”#p57896 cool! i was checking this out though and it seems like a combination of local + online co-op is not supported?
@“tapevulture”#p57897 hmmmm, I couldn‘t say for certain. I’m just now realizing that you mean you‘re playing in pairs together online. I read over it too quickly, I thought you meant to go back and forth between couch coop and online coop. I have it on PS4, but I don’t have a second controller for PS4 to be able to check it for you. I have multiple controllers that I could use to test out the PC version on Gamepass, but I doubt that necessarily confirms functionality for consoles.
edit - I just remembered I have move controllers for PS4 that should serve the purpose. I can try it out later and let you know.
@“Herb”#p57899 wow dude thanks
Evidently the move controller won‘t even let you confirm as a player. I went ahead and booted it up on Gamepass though. You can’t do multiple players for online matches on one machine for PC, so almost definitely can‘t be done on console. Looks like you’d need four machines and four copies of the game, unfortunately. The PC version did give me a message about having crossplay with consoles if that means anything to your situation.
