I’d be interested to know what you thought of Embers, that new soccer manga which will apparently be replacing Hakutaku. The preview video they released for it looked pretty mediocre, I thought.
it is such a similar setup to ao ashi it’s kind of crazy. if ashito was sakuragi that is what this seems to be.
i hadn’t seen this yet! I dunno how it slipped past my radar.
I really loved all the sports manga they axed in the last year, Two on Ice, Martial Master Asumi, and Green Green Greens were really really solid and I’m upset they were cut short!
just gave Embers a read and Yeah It Has It!!!
some really kinetic lines I adore the foot kicking here
always confused with serializations that have a first chapter so intentionally different from what it sets up at the end of the chapter but it’s promising! I hope his pompadour friend is along for the ride!!
That’s some clean line work! Hard to get our hopes up about a new SJ sports manga sticking around these days, but I’m glad it’s off to a strong start…
The rugby one and the baseball one about the pitcher who can only pitch three strikes a day before his arm blows out both had my attention early and both have been draaaaaging along for a couple months without much interest
i wanna read rugby rumble even though it looks really middling i think I’d have fun!
really i just appreciate manga plus having a huge variety of series simultaneously published in English
the new series I’ve been liking is Sirens Won’t Sing For You
great romance action premise with a really unique and compelling lead! I love a romance focusing on the girl pursuing her romantic interesting!
I got really lucky at the local used book store and the first volume of The Lady of Pharis by Akihiro Yamada came through:
I love this early wave of manga where they didn’t quite know how to market them to comic book readers and so everything is beautifully oversized. I would generally describe the interiors as “anime Frank Frazetta” and if that sounds like your kind of thing, I urge you to seek it out.
There was a cool essay in the back detailing a bunch of the influences on Japanese fantasy in general that I took the liberty of transcribing for posterity: About Lady of Pharis by Akihiro Yamada | Comix Zone
Akihiro Yamada has a bunch of game credits that are worth checking out.
It took until literally the final chapter of No/Name before I figured out that the warebear girl’s weird baggy pants skirt thing was her jacket when she transforms into a bear
if you arent reading Showha Shoten, the non-battle battle manga about manzai comedy duos with art by Takeshi Obata (of death note fame) then what are you even doing bud!!!
Just finished the 26 chapter award winning “The World of Machida-kun”
Very heart warming slice of life.
I wanted to check this out how are the jokes lol
they range from pretty funny to okay.
its not unfunny!
just difficult to have that rapid pace in print like this
Read a few chapters of “Waiting for the Sunlight.” Really enjoying it so far. It’s about a girl who wants to be a ceramicist growing up during WWII in Japan. There’s definitely some depressing stuff going on in here and it reminds me of the scary reality we are facing today but I find it really captivating and endearing.
I don’t know who here is going to be interested to hear this but I read the first volume of The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All heretofore referred to as “green yuri”. First off, incredible art, and I love the splashes of green everywhere. It’s a little too funny that these zoomers are gushing over RHCP and Aerosmith though. Also the story is developing way faster than its characters who I otherwise like and would enjoy some more development of. I don’t know why but I put a hold on the second volume at the library because I don’t know what else to read until they get in the final volume of Even Though We’re Adults, a yuri manga I’ve definitely been enjoying.
Green Yuri, Even Though We’re Adults, and How Do We Relationship is the holy trifecta of yuri for me right now
I read a bit of that when people were still calling it So, Do You Want to Go Out or…? I remember thinking Miya was such a drag that I stopped going back once I was up to date lol. Might’ve been the translation though I dunno (hope so)
Almost same, I just couldn’t get very into green yuri so I would replace it with She Loves to Cook, and She Loves to Eat
incredibly reasonable its not a slow burn its a slow simmer and even that is a stretch
i will say the majority of my interest is really in the art, paneling, and character’s initial designs but I will 100% own up to any criticisms because there are many and they are all super valid
a smaller (now cancelled) series I would recommend is Sukeban and Transfer Student, really really cute and every chapter is a delight
also everyone should read Love Bullet
The art in HDWR? absolutely is real good, 100%.
Sukeban and Transfer Student
I really like the art in this. It reminds me of Nanae Haruno’s art.
I meant Green Yuri but how do we relationship has some PHENOMENAL line work its crazy how it is so expressive and varied while being a relatively consistent thickness almost always?
