I’d be interested to know what you thought of Embers, that new soccer manga which will apparently be replacing Hakutaku. The preview video they released for it looked pretty mediocre, I thought.
it is such a similar setup to ao ashi it’s kind of crazy. if ashito was sakuragi that is what this seems to be.
i hadn’t seen this yet! I dunno how it slipped past my radar.
I really loved all the sports manga they axed in the last year, Two on Ice, Martial Master Asumi, and Green Green Greens were really really solid and I’m upset they were cut short!
just gave Embers a read and Yeah It Has It!!!
some really kinetic lines I adore the foot kicking here
always confused with serializations that have a first chapter so intentionally different from what it sets up at the end of the chapter but it’s promising! I hope his pompadour friend is along for the ride!!
That’s some clean line work! Hard to get our hopes up about a new SJ sports manga sticking around these days, but I’m glad it’s off to a strong start…
The rugby one and the baseball one about the pitcher who can only pitch three strikes a day before his arm blows out both had my attention early and both have been draaaaaging along for a couple months without much interest
i wanna read rugby rumble even though it looks really middling i think I’d have fun!
really i just appreciate manga plus having a huge variety of series simultaneously published in English
the new series I’ve been liking is Sirens Won’t Sing For You
great romance action premise with a really unique and compelling lead! I love a romance focusing on the girl pursuing her romantic interesting!
I got really lucky at the local used book store and the first volume of The Lady of Pharis by Akihiro Yamada came through:
I love this early wave of manga where they didn’t quite know how to market them to comic book readers and so everything is beautifully oversized. I would generally describe the interiors as “anime Frank Frazetta” and if that sounds like your kind of thing, I urge you to seek it out.
There was a cool essay in the back detailing a bunch of the influences on Japanese fantasy in general that I took the liberty of transcribing for posterity: About Lady of Pharis by Akihiro Yamada | Comix Zone
Akihiro Yamada has a bunch of game credits that are worth checking out.
It took until literally the final chapter of No/Name before I figured out that the warebear girl’s weird baggy pants skirt thing was her jacket when she transforms into a bear
if you arent reading Showha Shoten, the non-battle battle manga about manzai comedy duos with art by Takeshi Obata (of death note fame) then what are you even doing bud!!!
Just finished the 26 chapter award winning “The World of Machida-kun”
Very heart warming slice of life.
I wanted to check this out how are the jokes lol
they range from pretty funny to okay.
its not unfunny!
just difficult to have that rapid pace in print like this
