The making of MaBoShi

My latest blog post, the result of many years of research.

Also includes a brief history of Panekit and a little bit of late 1990s Japanese indie game dev tools.

we donā€™t get enough games that look like theyā€™re made out of golden oak or perhaps even a lighter mahogany

Hahaha! Iā€™m not keen on the wood texture I have to say.

Worth noting that one of the programmers was Kotori Yoshimura, who started out at Tecno Soft way back when it was still called ā€œSasebo Microcomputer Centerā€ā€¦ she later went on to create Thunder Force and Star Cruiser, among many many other games.

MaBoShiā€™s Mikito Ichikawa (aka Micky G Albert of Mindware Corp) is perhaps most famous for preventing Sega from patenting the ā€œviewport changeā€ technique in 3D games, thanks to his prior art in Star Wars X68000.

Hereā€™s a good interview with him.

Iā€™d seen you post about this before @gingerbeardman but finally got it all set-up with your (very nicely done) bespoke skin on my phone when you made this thread. Addicted!

Currently deep in the bar game. Pursuing the self imposed goal of a platinum in level 1.

Please report back! These days I only really play the circle game.

In Bar, I can see the finish line as platinum and get gold easily in 2 moves. Iā€™m assuming I need to either retain more momentum to avoid warmup time or use wall bouncing in a new way.

The Square and Circle games are also really great. Itā€™s wild how tuned these mechanics are.

Iā€™m not sure what you mean by this. How high have you gone? How many gates have you passed? More than one, right? There are 61 stages on the Bar game

It really is.

Oh yeah, I have reached stage 6. I just really want to get that stage 1 platinum!

Highly recommend playing Panekit. Itā€™s way more intuitive than youā€™d expect. Kinda genius.
