The Nightreign Cometh (Elden Ring: Nighreign Thread)

Fortnite Souls is here! And so is the official thread of the game.

I played about 2 hours of it shortly after launch last night and had a great old time with it. The opening tutorial is a rough ftorrent of too many words, but after that it dumps you in the world with many questions and just a vague objective. My two main reflections were:

  1. It feels like a good remix where you recognize the song but everything’s at least a bit fresh. Or maybe just the fever dream you have after playing Elden Ring while sick and then falling asleep to a Fortnite stream.
  2. It’s way crazier and more-anime than a normal Souls game. It definitely feels like they were trying to make something fun and silly that maintains many of the virtues of a From game but isn’t necessarily meant to be as weighty an experience.

I’m probably going to have time to play more on sunday and my friends I"m playing with may not be available, so lmk if you want to play with just a quasi stranger.

How easy or difficult to you suppose it would be to get a handle on this for someone who has played every Souls game except Elden Ring itself?

It might be a bit harder to totally wrap your head around it, but even with my 200+ hours in Elden Ring, I was totally lost for my first few runs even after the tutorial.

Many of the things that were new in Elden Ring are carried over here in slightly different forms and there’s a bunch of new stuff. So, everyone’s at least a little lost right now.

I forgot to preload it, so I’ll have to dive in tomorrow sometime. Looking forward to pugging it up with randos and dying cartoonishly

I played through the tutorial this morning and thought it was pretty fun.
Familiar enough, but feels fairly different.
I love jumping and climbing.
Probably gonna try a solo run sometime after work, and then hopefully get a couple people together to play a bit.

It’s getting mixed reviews from players and boy do I strongly disagree with all the main criticisms. I’ve played with a friend and with strangers and think it works both ways. Haven’t tried solo, but also seems like that’s not really the point? I say this as someone who basically never plays multiplayer games.

Same.
Don’t do a lot of multiplayer in general, but i think it’s pretty good here.
I’ve been doing solo as a way to kind of figure out my strategy and then doing multiplayer, even though I’m always the worst one on the team.

so i’ve just played solo for an hour and a half or so

this is VERY fun and the only big gripe i have is the time limit/shrinking circle of death. But from what I’m reading this is a very very basic mechanic of big multiplayer games like Fortnite that I have never touched. Man oh man would it be taking over my life if I could just grind up for a day, take on a boss, do it again, die to a third boss.

I’ve seen people discussing randomizer runs of souls games before and like, yes, i get it. that rules.

I platinumed Elden on release and i’m just awful at this lol. Maybe rusty? Probably? But the time limit is making me act rashly.

Bloodborne taught me to be mean so maybe that’s more the mindset.

I also platinumed Elden Ring on release and I struggled with this. There’s definitely a learning curve on top of the rust. Being mean is definitely part of (work with the team to act as a gank mob).

And yeah, the shrinking ring is very much a fixture in the Fortsnites of the world*. It has really screwed me a few times, but the way they’ve implimented it here is interesting and not just a control+v job.

I remember a lot of joke s from when Elden Ring launched about what it woiudl be like if another studio made that game, so it’s very funny to get a version of Elden Ring that is fromsoft showing how they’d make other peoples’ games.

Okay, I beat Gladius after about 14 hours.
This game is hard as heck.
Big ups to Goonlester.

Mostly been playing solo but I feel like practicing with the extra pressure really did carry over to the few multiplayer runs I did. The biggest learning curve has been learning the damn map, but I’ve got about 12 hours now and it’s starting to click together. I love how scrambly the game is, just a mad dash the whole time.

After about 10 hours (mostly with 2 randos), I am starting to pick out a few strategic best practices. For context: I’m able to hold my own in combat—though I’m usually not the top contributor—but am still pretty lost in navigation. These are tips I’ve pieced together from watching what better players do.

  • Don’t spend much time fighting grunts, minions, and weaklings. Instead, rush the bosses. You can definitely get enough souls this way to level up, but it makes a big difference in the number of powerful items/buffs you get from killing bosses
  • Some bosses are harder than others. Don’t feel the need to fight, say, the death bird right when you land.
  • Find as many of the estus-flask-increasing churches as possible. I think you can get up to seven or eight charges.
  • On day two, find the big lava pit and go down to the bottom of the crack in the world. You can promote your weapon to legendary at an alter down there. Also, it’s cool.

Mostly I’ve been playing as the griffin character, which feels very beginner friendly. I also like his crazy anime swooshing attack. It’s fun to finally be able to do such a bog-standard boss move.

I’ve been watching people play this game and if I ever get a chance to play it, I think I might like it more than Elden Ring. Of course I’ll reserve judgement until I actually play it, but I’m attracted to the fast pace, building knowledge of the map, the shuffled familiar elements, and the character options. That I can experience Elden Ring combat without stressing about my build, sounds so fun.

I just heard about these. I wasn’t going to get it but now I’m interested.

It did score the coveted

Turns out you unlock skins once you beat 2 bosses; my first thought seeing Dutchess’ options.
