I have been meaning to ramp back up my physical activity, very easy to get lazy working away your days for The Man. I am an odd ball, I get seasonally depressed in summer not winter. I love for the snow and snowboarding. I make my own, it’s a passion that’s been lying dormant recently and getting me down. Plan in the works to correct that but still just plans…
I got back in the water and surfed this week, it’s been flat most of this year at my beach (and rather poopy) which has been a bummer. The water is unnaturally warm, even for a El Nino year. Hoping the extra powerful hurricanes that will be coming soon stay far off shore and keep damage at a minimal, just clean waves and good vibes. Want to shape some surfboards too. But again, stuck in the plans…
Need to get deeper into skateboarding, my missing sideways link. Longboarded in college but no traffic free hills to rip up elbows on near me. Would love to learn bowls, a yearly goal going on 7. Some surf skate decks would be another fun one to advance beyond plans…
I have a road and mountain bike collecting dust that I’m aching to get back on. One of these weekends will be the one I finally spruce them up. My kettlebells and running shoes are crying for attention, I hope to make the new routine stick soon.
My main source of physical fun these days, as a 30 something year old dude with 30 something year old friends, by law it has to be golf. Which is an incredibly problematic love for someone environmentally minded but I can’t shake the need to go out and swing. Realizing I have a natural knack that needs just a bit of refinement to reach a respectable level certainly drives the duality there but I try not to over think it. Excited to get out and play this weekend and watch the Open while working the next few days.
Someday hopefully soon I’ll have those board building plans sorted and executed and if anyone wants to try some wacky stuff and are in New England would be happy to link up 🤙🏻
@“Gaagaagiins”#p125005 I’d be loathe to opt out of them entirely
You don't have to, btw. You can have it only replace thumbnails that have had manual replacements selected and voted upon via the community. You can also set it to not touch the thumbnails and only update/replace the title text.
An example that turned up for me recently that showcases all of these things:
vs
Even if you want to see the author-specified thumbnail, the community replacement titles are usually significantly more useful than the buzzfeed-style "you won't believe what happened when I did THIS" clickbait ones.
For the next month I‘m running everyday and writing about it here. I’m on day 6. Not sure how interesting it will be to people who aren‘t me, but there are a bunch of descriptions of random roads in Shanghai, and other thoughts that I have while running. Maybe somebody on here will get something out of it. I might add photos at some point if I’m ever back with my phone at some of the places described (I don't carry my phone with me while running).
out for a run and checking IC during a breather. Mere seconds after reading about dangerous Chicago geese these guys walk out of the bushes directly into my path
it’s because they’re more aggressive in defending their nests + they tend to nest in tall grasses, so are therefore often hanging out in parks where people are walking and jogging. They also don’t really warn you before swooping in and bonking you in the head, while canada geese will at least hiss at you first
I’ve rarely felt menaced by either of these animals. The geese down by the canal locks where all the tourists go are definitely ready for a fight but I don’t go down there much. Geese on bike paths and in the parks avoid confrontation more even when they have their young around.
Where I grew up I would go for long bike rides out in the farmland and have red-winged blackbirds trailing me overhead. I didn’t know at the time that was territorial behaviour and exactly how they drive intruders away. Until I moved to a big city I hadn’t heard of them dive-bombing people either. Maybe dense urbanization and a car-centric culture make every animal that has to tolerate that kind of environment irritable?
Sick thread! I’m obsessed with biking and skating, and have covered a tremendous amount of area throughout all boroughs of NYC, except for Staten Island for obvious reasons. I’ve never been a skater that can do tricks, but I’ve street surfed all over the city, then later transitioned to mostly riding my fixie as I’ve gotten older.
As someone who gets along best doing solo activities, it’s been an amazing way to hang out with myself in the city and not feel lonely. When I was in my 20s I was lucky to have a few friends to cruise the city with, and I have to admit although we never hit anyone, we were pretty reckless/adrenaline seekers during our group rides. But these days I take it slow and mostly ride alone, as friends here have since scattered or settled down with kids.
Back then and to this day I love nothing more than getting out on my wheels in the city and just taking it all in. I’m not much of a photographer, but I have documented tons of images of the city over the past 10yrs just riding around, and often in unique spots, as I venture far and wide on my fixie. I’ve ridden over all the bridges multiple times, and I think my furthest round trips have been around 60 miles (recently from Bed Stuy up to the Bronx near Fordham, and long ago when I lived in Harlem, I rode from Sugar Hill to Riis Beach and back.)
Bought the bike and board about 10yrs ago, have calculated I’ve easily surpassed 15000 miles riding around NYC alone. (Spent 3 yrs riding from Harlem to LES everyday, rain, shine or (minimal) snow. And that time alone got me to 10k miles!)
hell yeah. have you done critical mass or a similar bike event while up there? i’ve always wondered how it must be to do a big bike event in NYC.
the rides up there must be super cool. i often watch this guy’s videos of people on fixies riding through the city
photography and biking are pretty intertwined hobbies for me. once i photographed my neighborhood by walking around, i figured i’d take my bike somewhere else to take pictures, but i havent been doing that as much with this humid hot weather.
And no, I avoid all the big group events. I hate crowds. A wild thing to say living here I know. But I tend to do most of my riding activities early mornings, or other low volume periods, depending where I plan on exploring/visiting. Also, I spend many rides kind of freestyling my route and destination, just going where the mood strikes.
I love riding with a few buds though, and am always happy to show folks around on the bike. So anyone here is more than welcome to hit me up if you live here, or are visiting, and ever want to go on a ride. Super casually of course! I don’t do the adrenaline rides anymore haha, so no worries about danger.
i’m the same way. i’ve done critical mass here a couple of times and i’ve liked it. with how bike-unfriendly things are, having a big group of people next to you occupying the road feels much safer. i usually go alone but it seems like a good time for small groups to stick together through it. you see people going super fast on skates too which is pretty cool.
though if you arrive late and the whole group leaves before you arrive from the starting point, it becomes a bit hectic trying to catch up. since the route would be quite unsafe otherwise, ending up doing the route on your own (as in separate from the group) is dangerous.
tbh its slim pickings out here when it comes to safe solo routes for biking and miami drivers are quite aggressive. even using the “”“bike lane”“”" (really just a sharrow) i’ve gotten the good old honk + middle finger.
i ride by myself most of the time i usually have 3 or 4 routes i pick depending on the mood/hour of the day with some slight variation if i see something cool i want to look at.
Muay Thai and weight lifting over here, when I can find the time. I like going to a local gym, but that costs money, so I use some loose weights/body weight exercises and a heavy bag at home.
I’m in my mid-40s and have had more than enough concussions (The last time I saw stars was my late-30s and that woke me up that my brain has had enough), so I see Muay Thai now as my version of an old man hitting a bucket of golf balls. I care more about “working on my swing” than anything else.
My #1 advice: don’t get old. And if you gotta get old, don’t take super long breaks from being active. Getting back up to speed just gets harder n’ harder n’ harder …
during and after the lockdowns I gained back a good chunk of the weight I had lost pre-pandemic and over the past 9 months or so I’ve been getting back into the gym to weight lift. I am certainly stronger now but I’m not really dropping any of the fat I gained because my diet isn’t the strict macro-focused affair it was when I lost weight. Trying to decide what it is I care about here really. I’d like to decrease my tummy size but it’s the first place I gain weight and the last place I drop it from so I’ll need to do some pretty heavy diet changes again for it to happen. Idk.
Been taking walks to hit 10k steps multiple times a week as well which I have been really liking! There’s a rose garden right near my apartment that’s great to walk around so I do laps around it and some of the surrounding neighborhoods. Takes a lil more than an hour, good for listening to a podcast.
