I thought it'd be difficult to go back to static portraits after being spoiled by the nice animated 3D models of the "recent" 3DS games, but surprisingly it's not a problem at all? Imagination really fills in a lot, plus the SFX and VFX carries everything else. I guess this shouldn't surprise me considering that 4 / 5 generations of Pokemon and Dragon Quest basically worked like this too and it was fine.

I prefer the 2D art over 3D models, for first time playthroughs of the original trilogy.

For EOIV and V, it's fine and it makes sense to be in 3D. But this is part of my qualms with 3DS hardware, which I felt cheapened itself by mostly using cheaper 3D graphics than the beautiful 2D art we saw on the original DS.

I may be over leveled.

Last night I utterly decimated the third stratum boss, doing over 1000 damage with maxed out flame combined with maxed ifrit chant.

At this point, the map design is the challenging part of the game.

I made it to the next stratum. What a twist! Honestly wasn’t expecting anything like this and it’s so awesome. I could criticize it from my 2023 perspective, but it‘s easy to forget the original etrian odyssey came out in 2007, one year after mother 3 and the wii hadn’t been out for a year.

One criticism of a previous stratum: the “forest folk” would not select the most barren desert stratum as their home. That makes no sense.

I‘ve started playing EO2 (just the first floor so far) but I had a fun time making my party with my girlfriend who isn’t familiar with the series, and explaining the differences between EO and other RPGs. We had a good time choosing portraits for each member together and I explained my naming conventions for the series, which is typically:

  • - Two regular names mashed up as a portmanteau - I have a guy called Thominald as a mash up of Thomas and Reginald.
  • - At least one member must have a non-alphabet character.
  • - One character must have a dumb nickname like name, cue Dr Bilby, my medic. To go with the above rule too, I've got a Protector called "Beef Man!" too.
  • - One character must have a nonsense nickname, like, say, my Troubadour called YumRumBum.
  • - And there should also be a character with a regular name, like I dunno, Gideon my dude.
  • Looking forward to playing through it with her. We're playing games that the other likes, even if they're not something we'd normally play, so it's fun to see what she thinks of EO.

    Has anyone used the feature of transferring data from EO1 to EOII?

    My switch for whatever reason never works when a game wants to read data from another game.

    But EOII seems to also have the password feature from the original.

    I just can‘t find the password anywhere in EO1. Doesn’t seem to be in options like before.

    This is a moment where I reach for an Instruction Manual. I assumed all games have them digitally now. But I guess games these days truly have no manual whatsoever unless stated otherwise. That‘s wild, for moments like these, it’s not outlined anywhere online for the HD version.

    I did the work to beat the game, I wanna transfer my guild and have the story reflect as much! >:I

    A manual would also be appreciated for how the heck _autopilot_ works. I just went the whole game without using it properly, which I guess is fine because the original didn't have it.

    I figured something out and holy cow I love that although I can’t literally bring my old crew across to the sequel— I can make updated versions of them, because the key art has redrawn all the same characters in new poses!! So cool! So it really feels like my same team is going to take on the new challenge! I love that.

    EO1 (NDS) spits out a password. You can use this in both EO2 (NDS) and EO2 (HD).

    EO1 (HD) saves data to the Switch. EO2 (HD) can use this save Data as long as it's a completed game (Save data with a Star Icon). EO1 (HD) does not spit out a password to write down and use.

    the reason I had to use someone elses password from a forum post from 2009 is because my nintendo switch never works when it tries to read save data from a different game. I've tried this with botw->totk and Smash Ultimate, which unlocks stuff if you have save data from certain games. It never works for me.

    Using a password from the DS game or carrying over cleared save data from PC or Switch will change the narrative slightly. You will be recognized for your feat of clearing the Etrian Labyrinth. You get a few small bonuses along with dialogue changes. I believe there may be some sidequests or more down the line. This won't matter at all to most people, but because I use the same party / character in almost every RPG, because I like it that way, this matters to me and increases my enjoyment of the game a fair bit.

    The **only** thing that carries over is your Guild Name, and you are given the option to change it. This all takes place within the canon of the story. So when you meet people in town, they say, "You used to be guild So-and-so, right?" So because I used someone else's password, at first, even though I changed my guild name to Sprouts, a lot of new people I've met say the name of the password I used from gbatemp, which is *guild OHHHHH*. It's still worth it for the dialogue changes, for me. I just read OHHHH as Sprout.

    I’m on floor 4 now and they haven’t used my new guild name once and keep calling me the old one.

    I guess it’s still worth it. I did the work to beat the first game so I want the continuity and rewards, but damn I wish it just worked properly and carried my save over. It works normally for most people but I think my custom firmware is breaking it.

    I started playing EOV last night and managed to make a terrible team (oops! All support). I kept losing party members to the 1st floor enemies.

    I read through some gamefaqs this morning and managed to rectify it. It‘s such a speed bump to make 5 characters right at the start of the game, but I’ve got to a stage where its pick up and play now.

    It's kind of nice to have auto drawing in this version, it means I can beautify the maps by coloring in water and not bother drawing a wall every time I move a space.

    I started a playthrough of EO1 this weekend and compared to the not so much fun I was having with EO3 a few weeks ago, I had a blast. I know that at least half of that experience was informed by my difficulty adjusting to the map drawing controls, but on Saturday I finally caved in and tried the button controls and they‘re much better than trying to manage doing touch controls. But I also think that EO1’s classes are remarkably well turned in a way that I don't think the series managed again until EO4 or so. Some of the classes are slight duds (alchemist is tough going because you have to be super careful keeping pace with the TP requirements of literally all their skills), but they all have uses, and they all work well together.

    @“Karasu”#p121607 I think starting with the first game is important for understanding the role of each character and their skills. Starting with EOII, they began adjusting the skills, deprioritizing certain ones that were OP in the first game. If you come straight into a sequel, you may not realize that an effective strategy could be to gun it straight for the same strategies that were effective in the first game, more or less.

    My OP strategy that made the game easy (at least the bosses): max out one of the three elements, the attacks that do massive damage to a single target, and the one that damages all enemies. Then max out the associated elemental buff on your troubadour, and start leveling the troubador's spell to add elemental damage to your physical fighters.
    I was doing 1000+ damage by the midway point of the game and absolutely crushing bosses. Also the element you choose seems to not really matter so much in the first game, I just went with fire, and by the time that was fully maxed, began working on electricity for the rare case where an enemy was resistant (basically just the red dogs in the final stratum)

    Dark Hunter seems like a very worthless class compared to troubador, especially when landsnecht and protector have enough binding skills between the two of them to get me through the entire game.

    They’re much better at dealing damage than troubadours, and their AGI is slightly better I think, so (for me) their binds end up hitting more often.

    Honestly, they changed enough in EO2 that I found them more useful there but they also have the alchemist problem where all their skills need more TP than they sometimes have access to in the early game. But I’ve tried replacing the landsknecht with a dark hunter before and had some success.

    But I think it’s about seeing what works, especially in 1 and 2! I’ve seen all kinds of gamefaqs and Reddit posts that are just people claiming their party is the only true party for doing well and I just don’t find it to be true. Maybe in 3 it’s harder to avoid having a broken party but in 1 and 2 I feel like just about anything will work!

    drawing a wall every time I move a space

    This can be really tedious if it’s the way you’re going through the game. I did it for much of the first game, but now in part 2, I walk through the corridors without drawing, until I reach a fork, then I make a line for the path I didn’t go down. Then when I take a break or have mostly cleared the map, if I feel like making it look pretty I go in afterwards and fill in the gaps.

    Here’s an example of a map I completely cleared, where two thirds of the map I wasn’t so meticulous about:

    it’s just like real paper. If drawing stops being fun… just stop drawing. So what if you have to make another trip? Sounds like a good excuse to go through the dungeon blind again.

    Another way to manage tp in the early game is something I said above: **pay attention to TP increase at the next skill level**, and **dont level the skill** if the tp cost goes up at the next level. Keep your offense magic level 1 and it will only cost about 6tp. You can then focus on raising the “root skill” that the offense is based on, which also increases the elemental damage *for free*.
    Does that make sense to anyone? Hard to describe, and I’m just typing this out on my phone real quick. It’s been a hectic weekend at work haha

    Yes, I agree with this, but I'll also add that I don't think the alchemist's skills are especially needed in the early game, or maybe at all-- you can get the troubadour to add elemental effects to other classes' weapons. To me it's not much fun to raise a character who can do one skill attack per run with the promise that later they'll be a beast. But that's probably just my preferred play style. I like playing with a team that works well together from the start and doesn't have characters who just defend for the first ten levels or whatever.

    I'll second not drawing maps! I say just go for automap if you don't find mapping fun, but if you don't enjoy building characters from scratch AND mapping by hand, maybe this isn't the right series, since those are for me the defining features.

    Another example for beets, when I already have floors mapped, and I’m just cruising through, grinding, going for a quest, fighting the stratum boss, clearing out FOEs, or anything that doesn’t require mapping; I turn off the large map and use my SEGA Saturn controller. it feels awesome, and is almost completely incapable of mapping. You could even forgo the in-game map and draw :writing_hand: it the old fashioned way sitting on your couch!! Who’s stopping you from doing that eh??

    Anyways, on the other subject of alchemy… that’s totally valid if you don’t vibe with it. My teams for these HD runs has been completely standard. I rarely ever use the defend option. I just use auto battle through all but the more menacing mobs. I got 5-10 elemental spells per run in the earliest game. The added physical attacks from the back row are helpful when I’m not using tp. By the second stratum, the troubadour and alchemist combo is a boss blaster. I tend to enjoy that sort of thing. I don’t use any of the elemental weapon buffs from the alchemist or landsnecht— that is entirely the troubadours job. The only songs I have the troubadour learn is ifrit and blaze. and I always used alchemy on the crabs in the first stratum.
