Travel thread

@“DaveedNoo”#p146325 nice RV, could use three times as many solar panels though if you ask me. ;o)

@“tokucowboy”#p148686 living in Tijuana I can confirm everything you said. the mexican army people always look so young it's disconcerting. btw if anyone is ever tempted to travel to san diego and cross the border for a medical procedure, feel free to ask me anything about coming over here! You can easily get to the border from the airport in a 30 minutes trolley ride.

@“treefroggy”#p148710 I was eyeing up that up! Guessing they got the starter pack.

@“穴”#p148711 In the late 90‘s my father ended up in Mexican City Prison La Mesa and nearly starved to death until they realized no one was coming for him after 8 months and set him free. He came to purchase over the counter medication which was sold in storefronts in mexico but was also part of a scheme to entrap and arrest americans. For him it was a formative experience, but I’m just throwing this out there as a warning to anyone who may make a trip to mexico for health care. They‘ll get ya!

I only had his stories until he found a video last year that was filmed at la mesa around that time, with a less well-adjusted victim, lol–

https://youtu.be/a9VdJhVTjks?si=BtWcqRDK_EZ7UVGj

it lines up exactly with the stories I was told my whole life so it’s all true! the video is just like his descriptions haha. From the box he lived in with the little door to the bucket of beans! He would watch shakira on mexican MTV and buy coffee from a little shop with “starbucks” written on the board lol

@“tokucowboy”#p148686 great story. i thought you were making a joke about the pomade until i saw the picture lol. the last time i got serious dental work, i was meant to be put under to get my wisdom teeth distracted. they gave me the pre-anesthesia and i was feeling good but the dentist wasn‘t able to penetrate any of my veins for the IV. they even tried sticking into my foot at one point. after about an hour, they asked me what i wanted to do. i was already pretty high, so i told them to go for it. they pumped me with barnyard levels of ketamine. my eyes were open but everything was black. i could hear and vaguely feel them going to town on my impacted wisdom teeth but it wasn’t painful. i was convinced this was because i died. when i eventually came to, i started talking to my dentist about religion. it was very strange.

@“treefroggy”#p148745 that‘s horrible. I’m so sorry that your dad had to go through that.

Right now it has gotten a lot better and medical tourism is a huge thing here and I know a lot of american people that come here just for that, that's why I thought to make that comment. There's a ton of extremely fancy and high end medical buildings and plazas in pretty safe neighborhoods right now.

@“穴”#p148749 well like I said it was formative, quite a positive experience after the fact. He had already faced a lot of adversity and crazy situations in his life prior. Unlike the guy in the video he made the most of it. He still eats beans out of a bucket every day, and I do too because of him! Think of all the EXP he gained from the experience– it's why he reached LVL 100 at only the age of 50! Basically La Mesa can be your Mexican Chulip

@“Karasu”#p148700 lord, very similar experience here, too – I was pecking away at getting stuff done in the US, spending a good deal of money every month (on work that needs done as a result of the poverty tax; being a freelancer, I never had healthcare and all of my tooth problems are the result of not having the money to get an annual cleaning). Every session, I asked the front desk what I owed and paid with my debit card right then and there. Then I started getting bills for hundreds more dollars and flat out said “nah.” Took them 8 months to tell me it was their mistake. For the implants, the US doc quoted me $10,000 – it‘ll be a bit over $3,000 in MX. The prices jumping all over for you is ridiculous; it’s an imperfect situation, but it's so refreshing to have communication and transparency instead of dentists acting like fucking mystical wizards who demand a $250 tithe just to be seen

@"treefroggy"#p148745 that's awful that happened to your dad. Like 穴 said, it's probably quite a bit different nowadays in places that are totally based around medical tourism (Nuevo Progreso was full of senior citizens in shorts who seem to do this all the time), and I wish it had been that way for your dad (or that he didn't have to leave the country for healthcare, that would really be ideal). But I'm glad you're both here to tell the story and eat beans (also recently read a study that said beans, friends and walks are huge drivers of a long lifespan, so big ups)

@"MoH"#p148748 that tracks -- these dentists were extremely liberal with the numbing agents and stuff. Any time I winced or clenched a fist too hard, they were like "pain?" and loaded me up. I honestly thought I was gonna feel a lot more pain than I did to get some screws drilled into my bone. I wish we'd talked about religion after -- instead I found out the very nice man at the desk who acted as translator for me this whole time was a big ol anti-vaxxing MAGA freak, so that'll be fun to navigate for my followup! I'm sure he'd love to talk about religion, or maybe cults

@“tokucowboy”#p148834 cool so I have two parts of the triforce: beans and long walks!

I’m gonna be down in LA on Feb 24th for a show at the Hollywood Palladium, I have a couple wandering around hours before it starts, wondering if there’s any cool game stuff in the area worth checking out? But also any general reccs for the area would be cool!! I’m gonna be on foot so gotta be walkable. Thank you!!!

@“sabertoothalex”#p150196 hollywood forever cemetery!

tomorrow I‘m going to Denver again. I won’t have a ton of free time but maybe i'll see something cool.

@“MoH”#p150283 sabertoothalex hollywood forever cemetery!

great call! Lots of celebrities are laid to rest there and its a nice park too. In the summer they also do movies and concerts on the lawn there. Larchmont village around there is a cute area to walk around in.

While you're in hollywood you can always get personality test at a scientology clinic. >!Don't do this.!<

Hey all you cool San Diego kids. What should I see and do when I crash in your wonderful city for a week in March? Spare me the zoo and the U.S. Navy stuff. I only know you from Top Gun, Anchorman, Almost Famous and getting your childhood’s sports teams inexplicably stolen by bored L.A. Billionaires.

@“◉◉maru”#p155059 la jolla is quite touristy but i like seeing the seals there (haven‘t been in years though). there’s also a shop with a weird tunnel that leads into a sea cave . uhhh torrey pines nature reserve has some nice short hikes along some cool landscapes (although there‘s a famous golf course near there so you can imagine the kind of area it is). if you want recommendations for some nice small record stores and book/zine shops let me know! as far as video games I just know of previous guest of the IC show Ian Ferguson’s store Luna Video Games.

if you are curious about crossing the border into tijuana just know that it's pretty doable timewise due to proximity, you'll just want to time your crossings right to avoid getting stuck for hours in line (this can happen walking and by car)

@“穴”#p155078 Thanks! Will check out Luna Video Games if I have the opportunity.

Regarding Mexico, I got great recommendations recently (from Sega staff no less!) for the Wineries north of Ensenada so I thought about it, but unfortunately, I can’t spend the budget to cross the border and take proper advantage of this opportunity this time.

North Park neighborhood is worth a visit. Walkable, great restaurants and stores and stuff. There's a good bar there called Part Time Lover that has a very warm ambience. Has a record store in the back too.

Little Italy is worth a walk for the touristy stuff as well.

@“◉◉maru”#p155105 the Wineries north of Ensenada

Yeah, it's quite nice down there. My mom's from Ensenada so I went there often as a child. My first sip of alcohol as a very young child was at a winery there lol
Sadly, I've been hearing the gentrification there is getting a bit out of hand.

Not being actually from San Diego my other recommendations would just be the usual "really nice beaches and balboa park has beautiful architecture and a lot of museums".

>

@“sabertoothalex”#p155110 North Park neighborhood is worth a visit.

Right. Forgot about North Park. Being vegan and from Tijuana I just tend to drink and eat over here cause it's way cheaper hehe. so didn't cross my mind. There's a cool used book store there called Verbatim. There's also a small leftist press that used to run on Verbatim but it recently opened it's own little zine/gift shop sort of near North Park. I'm close friends with some of the people involved there and you can even find stuff by my older brother's zine/book printing press project there. (gotta plug my friends and family lol)

@“◉◉maru”#p155059 Hey all you cool San Diego kids. What should I see and do when I crash in your wonderful city for a week in March?

Not a San Diego kid, but I can strongly recommend going to see [the Geisel Library at UC San Diego](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/44/Geisel_Library%2C_UCSD.jpg)! It's really excellent in person, and probably William Pereira's best work!

Just saw that his thread exists. I have a couple trips planned and would love any suggestions anyone has for things to do. One to Vancouver in March, and one to Lisbon in May / June. Hoping to also spend some time in Porto. What should I do / where should I go / What should I eat etc?
