thanks! gonna keep these in mind for next time i’m around LA. I actually went to long beach a week after i posted that and ate at The Grain Cafe. It wasn’t the greateat food but just seeing a huge menu full of vegan stuff and eating some cake. the service and presentation were really good though
when i asked the original question we didn’t have time to go to vegevalley and were kind in a hurry and happened to be next to a montys good burger so we ate there. it was also good fast food.
Also all the local vegans in my region are in mourning right now cause the good vegan taqueria just closed. RIP Tacongo. They were really really amazing and they had even expanded into san diego recently. Something not very good must have happened cause for the last two weeks they were in take out only mode cause they only had 2-3 employees.
Long time reader, first time poster here. I have a question I’ve been discussing here at home for a while and wondered what the opinion of it was here.
This evening I opened a snack of nuts, which had some flavouring on them, and were certified vegan on the packaging. When I looked through the ingredients list, a habit I’ve gotten into a lot more lately, I noticed that it had the dreaded may contain traces of … text and it noted two things that shocked me, eggs and milk. Which made me think, not very vegan that!
I read up a bit more and turns out the term vegan on food in the UK (where the snack was from) and the EU isn’t officially defined, meaning that it is totally acceptable to put vegan on a product which may contain non-vegan ingredients. While I’m not vegan or vegetarian, I think that’s pretty wrong!
So I’m curious, how is it where you live and is this sort of thing for vegans specifically very difficult when choosing options to eat? And do you take that chance on certain things if you really want them?
The whole may contain traces of thing is mostly for the sake of people who have really sensitive allergies, from a Vegan perspective it can mostly be ignored imo
Yeah, almost every mass manufactered foods/snacka will have the “may contain: eggs milk etc”
In mexico it used to be "this product was manufactered in a facility that also handles: eggs, etc. But it recenty got aligned with U.S. and uses: “may contain”
from what i understand there’s barely any food processing facilities that are entirely vegan so they are legally covering themselves just in case.
Agreed, I think of it as just a legal disclaimer for allergy sufferers.
For me the key point is that I am not directly paying for the use of animal products, similar to the point people make about perhaps animals being harmed during the harvesting of crops etc. Sure, that may happen - but it is not a necessity for the product to exist and I am not explicity paying for it to happen.
Most of the food I buy doesn’t explicitly say vegan or vegetarian on it so I gotta scan through if I’m not familiar with it. One goofy thing I’ve noticed is lots of meat substitutes will have small amounts of eggs or dairy in them. Why not go full vegan? I’m guessing they are working on it.
Ive been making some very epic miso soup this season. I call it Pink Miso because the purple cabbage turns it pinkish purple. My partner doesn’t know what miso is and doesnt like it so mg heart is broken. Her sister and brother in law came and brought some home though. I can’t tell if they actually like it or just feel sorry for me.
it’s not the prettiest but I’m sure it’s delicious and nutritious! maybe you should introduce her to a very light, simple miso with just silken tofu and a bit of seaweed first. it took a while but it has really grown on me in recent years and we have it all the time.
Yesterday, I thought I’d have a go at making some tofu scramble – I’d never done it before. I just never really felt the desire, I guess. A strong craving for some sort of breakfast sandwich came over me, and I figured this was the time to try it.
Turns out, it is really simple and genuinely rather good!
I made this recipe:
…with a minor tweak, in that I didn’t have any tahini in the house so I just used a little extra oat milk instead.
It was nice! I’ll make it again. I’m not sure how often, as I usually don’t eat a big breakfast but it is good to know I can whip this out pretty quickly and effortlessly.
