Videogames and the Military: A Love Story

on resetera dot com you could see video game dork ‘thought’ process coalesce into condoning fascism in real time today

@“yeso”#p58089 you couldn't pay me to read a video game forum thread on that particular topic. there is not enough money in the world

it is a cross I must bear for no real reason and no one has ever in any indicated I should do. But I think it‘s germane to the thread as tom clancy/COD weird war fantasy + propaganda effects on the video game nerd brain. They’re going to be so disappointed if they don't get the slav bloodbath they were promised, would be a major missed opportunity for scolding

in the next COD there will be a mission where you are embedded in an azov battalion firearms training session for grannies

imagining lieutenant soap renouncing the MiC, travels to chiapas to help the EZLN. Press ‘F’ to…….wait for it……teach the letter F to a group of students in a Zapatista classroom. Yes you're prepared for self defense, but spiritually you have turned your sword into a plowshare and you occupy your days by literacy tutoring and agricultural labor in you autonomous village. Activision I know you need to rehab your image and I have the solution

Turns out the US Department of Defense and @“exodus”#3 have one thing in common: they both don’t appreciate Nintendo very much! Still waiting for their stance on the PC Engine.

@“Moon”#p46792 Thats one way it could go, another one I like to imagine is that “war zones” become “game theaters” and whoever is caught inside of them is incentivized to collect “killstreaks” or perform other rewarded actions, and points can be redeemed for airstikes or other support that’s lobbed into the fray by the US military sitting in the relative safety of a nearby green zone.

The app is real!

@“Moon”#p60063 this seems about as real as the (equally quickly shut down) patreon for the ukranian military

Arma 3 Ukraine map mod is blowing up. The azov battalion unit is still available on the official, arma3 site, though it looks like it was removed from the steam workshop.

Also, resetera dot com has given their approval for the Ukrainian public to embark on a years long insurgency campaign if needed. Which is incredibly brave of the posters there thanks nerds

according to the #gamerbrain there are good guys and bad guys, and there‘s moral ambiguity but that’s a gameplay feature. You do or watch the moral ambiguity gameplay feature and then it's over and digested.

@“yeso”#p60513 I saw someone on Twitter try to compare what‘s happening right now to Xenoblade Chronicles 2 for exactly the reason you’re describing. Like, people were talking about Ukraine, and unprompted this dude started talking about Xenoblade. What a world we live in.

not sure what is more unsettling, kotaku championing an esports pro donating lots of money to the Ukrainian military, or the comments section rabidly shouting down someone in the comments pointing out that this is a bit gross.

edit: removed link to kotaku article in support of the GMG union strike

This kind of thing, confusing game footage for reality, has been happening more and more
