"What could possibly go wrong?"

Gex was just acquired by entertainment juggernaut Embracer for an astonishing $300 Million U.S. dollars, bundled with a few irrelevant dependencies… Exciting times for Gex! Great things ahead!

Not sure if it counts as a mascot, but above average 3D platformer precursor Croc finally gets some love well after all those losers cited above.

I think Blinx is fine

Earthworm Jim has always been terrible - excising a creator with garbage politics doesn't change that.

as a kid, i never saw sega anything out here - so of course i lost my mind when a nearby mall was gonna have an event to hype up jurassic park for the genesis (you could play as the raptor!!)

i also entered every sweepstakes that didn't cost me money, but barely ever won a thing...until this sega event! man they called my number and i was hoping for like an alex kidd figure or something like that (maybe a raptor?) but...it was a bubsy plush!
wish i still had it, haven't seen it on ebay/etc since.

For archiving purposes, let it be remembered that the latest annual high budget promotional video from publicly listed company Devolver Digital Games playfully riffed on the topic of this thread.

If this game store ever closes they need to donate the statue to the videogame history foundation

Correction!: Square Enix dumped Tomb Raider and Deus Ex and Legacy of Kain but somehow they have kept the Gex IP. It’s Cloud and Sora and Gex now.

the title of this thread not saying “paws-ibly” makes me double-take every time

anyway the answer is conker, i never played awesome possum but it just looks derivative and generic as opposed to just awful and terrible

also i just wanna drop this one here, titus the fox. or, uh, the titus fox?

Awesome Possum... Kicks Dr. Machino's Butt (full title only, please) is the game that deserves all the scorn Bubsy gets:

  • the game handles like complete garbage and runs at a very low framerate
  • the character design is maybe the most no-effort of any comparable game
  • on top of being an anthro mascot with 'tude, it also does the completely toothless environmental thing
  • its one unique selling point is having lots of voice samples, but all the quips are sub-Bubsy levels of not-even-jokes, and they don't even sound good

It's the actual worst of all the fake Sonic games of its era, no question. Bubsy could conceivably be okay with some tweaks, but not this one.

e: turns out I said pretty much the same thing years ago, yall know I'm Solid

Am I (is anyone?) supposed to know or care what Carbon Engine is?

Dev houses (or perhaps more accurately, marketing departments attached to dev houses) seem to _love_ naming their toolchain, and some weird subset of gamers seem to really care what that toolchain has been named.
Flummoxing.

I think it‘s more for IP holders and licensors than Gamers—it’s easier to attract interest when you can demonstrate a through-line between a bunch of existing products and the one you‘re pitching, even if it’s completely arbitrary, and being upfront or nonchalant about it being an emulator suite still carries baggage that can cause unnecessary problems… like, when Digital Eclipse relaunched and were talking up the “Eclipse Engine”, a big part of that was them heading off all the concerns from people who believed Nintendo was going to waterboard anyone who tried to reissue a raw NES game on a non-Nintendo platform, etc etc.
