What's a "BAFTA" and why do they think this?

Everybody loves Gobbo!

A British childrenā€™s book villain rocking the hangover makeup since all the way back in the 50s, wow

Why is he dressed like a bee?

Shadowheart specifically being on this list is very funny to me. I guess considering British tastes in cuisine, this is not so surprising.

But in fairness my own list of top 20 iconic characters would be far more inflammatory to most people, so I respect the hell out of the hallowed institution of BAFTA deciding that LittleBigPlanet is more iconic than Pokemon.

tbh I feel like the question of ā€œmost iconic characterā€ would be a good prompt for a poll similar to the irregular forum-wide polls such as Game & Sound or the prestigious forums.insertcredit.com video game poll. ā€“ and Iā€™m sure it would end up even more fascinating results.

Even though Iā€™ve played all three of those games, I still had to look up what the hat looks like. In my mind he had his hood up like a real hacker. Truly iconicā€¦

Iā€™m NGL I kinda thought that Watchdogs Guy hat was a bit iconic. I still donā€™t know him as anything other than ā€œWatchdogs Guyā€ but I still think about that hat.

Watchdogs Guy has always made me think of Steve Reich, since, I figure olā€™ Steve must be very self conscious about having gone bald, since it seems like there are only two kinds of publicly readily available pictures of Steve Reich, ones that look like theyā€™re from the 70s and heā€™s not wearing a hat but heā€™s likely got a distinctly receding hairline forming, and ones of him wearing one of these Billionaire Avoiding The Paparazzi-ass baseball caps on:

Bald is beautiful Steve, but you do you.

this has to be a 100%, totally novel thought lol

Do they know what an icon is? Itā€™s not just ā€œwhat characters are popular right now?ā€ Itā€™s closer to ā€œif you had to click something to open up ā€˜video games,ā€™ what would you click?ā€ I might click Pac-Man. I would click Kiryu, but Iā€™m not sure most people would. Shadowheart and Astarion? No. Iā€™m clicking them to open up some slashfic, and a lot of people arenā€™t clicking them at all.

Youā€™d be the right person to ask, then. Did you ever look at Watchdogs Guy and think of Steve Reich

I mean I am flattered to be thought of as capable of a novel thought, but there are so many thinkers out there, you know?

i think your post has spoiled me, as iā€™ve never really looked at watchdogs guy that much before besides a couple cursory glancesā€¦
by which i mean, every time i see him going forward, iā€™ll think of steve reich
(also i didnā€™t know that steve reich is bald)

I mean, Iā€™ve only ever looked a Watchdogs Guy in cursory glances as well, so, maybe @yeso is on to something here

Out of respect for his clear wishes in this regard, letā€™s say that itā€™s undetermined whether he is bald or not. Perhaps if your hairline looks like the below in 1989, there seemingly not being a single photograph from the current millenium of you not wearing a hat just means you really like wearing a baseball cap:

I mean, look, he likes wearing hats so much he even wears one while performing in the notoriously casual world of western art music, a thing I have never seen anyone do even as a joke:

(Once more I have to state clearly that Bald Is Beautiful and it is nothing to be ashamed of)

  • There were not 4000 people polled for this. A group of twenty 20-something-year-old staffers spent literally hundreds of hours working on this list, trying to alchemize the most discourse possible. Putting Mario at #2 is an obvious tip of their hand. Lara Croft is a great choice for #1 because sheā€™s British and also itā€™s throwing red meat to the anti-woke crowd bc ā€œwoman.ā€ Baldurā€™s Gate picks are there to piss off the oldheads and please gen-alpha. Agent 47 and Sackboy are also WTF picks but ones you canā€™t claim recency bias on. The rest of the picks are standard, meant to lend the list some credibility, but thereā€™s enough subjectivity in the placements that the order will still get those valuable quote-tweets. (Okay fine Iā€™m being cynical, but likeā€¦ am I really that wrong?)

  • The REAL REASON the British public voted Lara Croft #1

  • I resent the BAFTA film division because they have somehow never nominated Denzel Washington for anything(??), so I want to hate the whole organization but they do also do the BAFTA Game Awards. Compared to the ninth circle of hell that is The Game Awards, presented byā€¦ that manā€¦ The BAFTA Game Awards come across as a much more respectable institution. The difference in the games the BAFTAs have awarded Best Game vs The Game Awards have awarded Game of the Year is kinda wild. Iā€™ve heard that part of the difference is that there are a lot more game developers involved in nominations/voting for the BAFTAs compared to The Game Awards

in ten years i can guarantee the bg3 cast will be legendary, but yeah this is still 2024 here, last i checked
