I saw something called “LD illustration collection” and you know I got excited. It wound up being kind of disappointing even though it was in fact what it said it was - a collection of Laserdisc covers (all for anime in this case).

The problems with it are all related to size. It’s basically a pamphlet, just around 40 pages. It’s also just not large dimension-wise. So while there are cool illustrations on there they’re sometimes less than a square inch in size. Often larger, but never large enough. Well, worth a try.

Then I got something that’s newer, and very much bait for me. A book of pc engine and mega drive unreleased games. It shares all the known info about them alongside screens, illustrations, etc that ran in magazines, and other supplemental info. It rules and if you can read Japanese at all I recommend it. There are lots of games I had never heard of in here - the downside is now I wish a lot of them had come out ;_;

“But wait” you ask - “didn’t you get a whole bunch of videos and stuff too?”

Yes! On top of those Laserdiscs I mentioned earlier, and one I forgot to (the first Yokohama Kidaishi Kikou - I already put it away so this is someone else’s photo but I do have both and they look like this):

I also got some tapes! One is from our best buddy Ritsuko Kurosawa aka Ritz, who we all love for her super choom heavy new jack swing-ish beats and that little lisp. This is just some of her music videos but I figured why not for two bucks.

Then there’s this hyo-ryu-ki tape. I’m not sure what it is! I’ll find out eventually. Lastly there’s a beta tape of The Samurai, a live action sex comedy based on a Manga that basically nobody has seen.

As a bonus check out the trailer of another LD I got (not from suruga-ya) called ア・ホーマンス。I have no idea what this means but looks neat.

the only anime laserdisk I owned was a Ghost Sweeper Mikami. watching YKK would be amazing on laserdisk… on a big ol JVC…

“But didn’t you get any games?” you ask. I did!

First, a whole bunch of demos and such. I like these pc engine demo collections, and there’s a few pcfx ones in here too.

Then in addition to that I got the bottom two games here. The top one I already had.

All these games represent the original ps1 output of a company called Santos. This was a company run by Takeshi Tozu, who was known for having previously started a company that was also called Santos.

The old Santos made games like Toki and battle golfer yui.

These ps1 games are all lower budget 2D affairs that munch above their weight. Two (perhaps rightfully?) under-discussed 2D shooting games and a puzzle game. You can feel how low budget they are but you can also feel the heart! They also self published which is cool and unusual.

So, here are the games in question. Airgrave:

Stahlfeder:

Tripuzz:

I think they’re all pretty neat! If they’d been on the Saturn people might call them undiscovered classics at this point but on the ps1 they just sort of receded into the background.

Those are the games I got!

Here’s the last of my suruga-ya purchases. Ending on the least exciting note, here’s some music I got.

An akina nakamori album I didn’t have, a psy・s album I didn’t have, two blue seed ost (I have the first and didn’t want the third so I got vol. 2 and the soundtrack to blue seed beyond), two devil hunter yohko osts (the touch my heart one replaces my old battered copy), and the last Cindy album I was missing. Weirdly this is her first album and the only one in English. Her last two were Japanese (I’m not sure how well she really spoke English in the first place). She recorded this at Stevie Wonder’s studio, and the one song he wrote, well, you really can tell. Those synth sounds! I really like the bit in the chorus where she sings “from you.”

The end!

I’m going to assume that the SNES version of Smash TV is their best game of 1992 because it is.

After picking up the Amiga A500 Mini a few months ago I decided I wanted to see how The Spectrum Mini turned out. I wasnt expecting it to arrive until late January so was pleasantly surprised to see the heavily worn Amazon box in my driveway. Luna took a slight interest but became bored once she realized it wasnt food.

I’m glad this album(or the US version atleast) is in circulation again. Discovery was going for like $200-$300 right after Daft Punk broke up. I asked my local record store at that time if they’d do a store credit exchange for my copy and the guy was just like, “No. People are being dumb, they’ll repress that any day.”

The Japanese version was always expensive, I think mostly due to the alternative and far superior cover to the global release. So to get a copy of that for less than 1,000+ USD price they’re asking for now (before they split up it was around 500), was a great result. I think that was 45 euros including shipping and to have it displayed at home, makes it a truly great purchase.

At least here I don’t believe it’s never been out of print, so did they stop selling it entirely in the US for a while then?
