I wouldn’t know. I haven’t played this game in roughly fifteen years, and I took the audio from a YouTube video.
Gotcha. My thought is it sounds like one of those poorly acted Star Ocean games, but the character sounds too haughty.
Valkyrie Profile?
It doesn’t sound as bad as chaos wars but I’m gonna guess chaos wars.
So far, @Tradegood is on the right track, if not the right platform.
Let’s see if grabbing some actual gameplay audio jostles anyone’s memory.
Is this a Tales of something???
It is not Tales, and it is not associated with the Tales series in any way.
Koudelka?
Why’s the audio version of What’s That Game taking so long? I’ve got a couple of interesting ideas for th-
Oh.
Here’s hoping the slightest morsel of more gameplay jogs people’s memories.
I think this thread might be a bit flawed, design-wise! It’s a very “if you know, you know; if you don’t, you don’t” kind of game. In the screenshot equivalents, there’s immense potential to extract googlable details, should one not know the game. That’s not quite possible in the same way with audio.
I wonder if some design changes could be made to make a version of this forum game viable… I might think on it a bit; perhaps try a new version.
For certain games, there are contextual/technological clues you can grab from the audio itself - instrument sets, audio frequency, signature sound effects, etc. More recent games don’t admit these solutions, and if people stalling on “late 90s RPG with bad voice acting” (IE as much as anybody’s narrowed my entry down) is anything to go by, acting on the clues you do have can be difficult in ways it wouldn’t be if this were visual.
I’m going to guess Grandia. I can picture the scene in my head where you’re selecting stuff in a menu, enemy is dropping coins, there’s a “bwaa” sound effect for something animating, and a little sister party member, but I just don’t recognize the music or the voice acting.
I think the last clue in particular is good, I can visualize something going on but I could be way off.
It’s not Grandia, and I’m honestly at a loss for any audio I could post that would move the game along without outright giving away the answer. I do have that option.
OK, this should narrow things down: you want a Saturn game.
Ah, Shining Force 3.
Seeing how this thread has stagnated a good few times in a row, I think I’d like to try making a new one within maybe a week or so! I have some ideas as to how it could be improved:
- Instate two time limits:
- A guideline for after how many days without a clue it’s advisable to put up another audio clip.
- A number of days without a guess after which one should reveal what the game was – since it turned out that no one could guess it – and when it’s officially alright to hijack the thread.
- Take a page from the Easy Mode screenshot thread, and advise that people choose games that others are likely to know somewhat.
If anyone else has any ideas, don’t keep your secrets!
Here, I think this one should be fun:
If it weren’t for the birds chirping, I’d think it was some sort of ambitious cracktro…
oh that’s Pokémon Snap! I’d recognize that starting chord anywhere lol
I think I speak for all of us when I say the audio edition of What’s That Game is one where you realize what the answer is only after someone else has already realized it for you.
