ARGH. I was literally looking at the other of the two games this morning and being like that’s not it… but it should be it…
I’ll take it! I didn’t know it had an official English title, but you bazoinked it. What tipped you off?
This is a screenshot of – and I believe this is the official name – Big Mode. Back when multimodality was still considered a sizzling move, rather than associated with movie-license games from 2007.
The “arigatayaaa!” sound clip is from the old lady in the opening. It’s seared into my prefrontal cortex – I haven’t been able to get it out of my head since I first heard it.
Alright! I had trouble remembering the name and kept settling on Getsu Fuuma Den, which is a different thing, so I ended up on the English name.
Somehow the thing that tipped me off were the little skeleton legs. And seeing that picture made the sound make sense and it just all coalesced together.
I’ve never even played this game; I’ve just watched the GameCenter CX episode like ten times. Thanks kacho!
Give me a bit to cook something up and I’ll have a proper post.
There is something about the awkwardness of Big Mode that’s both memorable and comes through in those skelelegs.
As a total tangent, there’s a song in Taiko no Tatsujin named “KAGEKIYO” – a medley of Genpei Tōma-den’s soundtrack – which I always expect to be epic, dramatic, bangin’, and heartrending, because of course you would, right!? Someone’s name in capital letters is the ultimate titling method for a video game song. “JENOVA”. “ASGORE”. Third example. But no, it’s mostly an ear-piercer. The music in Genpei Tōma-den just ain’t all that.
Sometimes I can’t tell if a game I like is popular or if I’ve just heard of it a bunch and it’s time to find out which this one is.
I feel like this may be an inconsiderate place to start, but I want to see if somebody gets it just from this.
Hint: It belongs on its platform
is that skate or die? I don’t know why I think that.
kinda looks like an unpainted wall in The Sims
LittleBigPlanet? It feels kinda Sony, I would not be able to explain why.
Turning into a forum-wide Rorschach test
Is it Wild Trax / Stunt Race FX ??
RC Pro-Am 2?
Thank you for indulging me in that. Everybody is wrong. Stunt Race FX is kinda close aesthetically. Here’s a screenshot that has information in it.
Hint #2: My first hint doesn’t make sense for the Japanese version
Wait, should I have taken the shot? Here’s what my gut reaction was when I saw that first image: IS IT CUBIVORE?
Man, that would’ve been such a cool hat trick – we could’ve had that guess in in the first four minutes. You know what stopped me? I thought, “no, that’s not at home on its platform – it was originally an N64 game, and it’s expressly not at home on the N64, since it wasn’t even released there.” In contrast, what made me sure was thinking, “oh, Dōbutsu Banchō doesn’t contain the word—… Iii get it.” The superfluous knowledge giveth, and the superfluous knowledge taketh away.
Wonderful pick!!! Gimme a hot minute and I’ll have a freshly baked one.
Here’s a different kind of challenge for y’all. If you’re Swedish, this one should be a cinch, since only 3⅝ video games have ever come out in Swedish. If you’re not, Google Lens should help.
Going to guess the only Swedish language game I know:
Is it Agent 999?
Max Von Sydow Teaches Typing
that’s Shadowrun SNES font…
You got it based on the FONT! That’s masterful! Hot stuff! How come it’s so familiar to you?
The Swedish translation of Shadowrun is immensely funny (“Don’t lock me in some shed” as a song lyric? And of course, my favorite – “Ferocious orc” became “Förbaskad orc”, which means “Gosh-darned orc”), but also something I’m bottomlessly thankful for. Translations to Swedish are few and far in between – video games are practically never translated to Swedish (a bit more as of late only on mobile, for some reason – and, er, Balan Wonderworld?), and the Swedish-translated manga industry died a grisly death entirely about 15 years ago (something that’s particularly devastating to me, since its former existence is the reason I’m a manga translator today). Even if Shadowrun is a bit silly, it’s all I want out of life.
lol i wish i had an interesting answer for you but i think i just have a text-box-oriented memory? Brains are amazing. I haven’t even played a ton of shadowrun but the text is very distinctive!
anyway does this mean its my turn
