Why were there so many caveman games!?

You probably won’t be surprised to hear there was a Flinstones game late into the PS1’s life (2000). You possibly won’t even flinch that it is called The Flinstones: Bedrock Bowling. But you’ll probably be surprised by the actual end result based on the expectations set by its title.

@treefroggy it’s in the multiplayer! But you can kinds play it single player

Is this a caveman game??

@exodus It’s definitely a game for the Insert Credit forums, is what it is!

@exodus In this case, the first world of Diddy Kong Racing counts for something then. Also Dinosaur Planet N64 prototype, hehe. Rare cared.

Primal Light has some Shadow of the Beast going on, I dig it.

did we already talk about caveperson professor in Pokémon [one of the new ones but not both i think?]?

@rootfifthoctave we did not! Are they in fact a cave person? If so, excellent

unfortunately, i don't know any more than “they look sort of like a caveperson”!

New Joe & Mac – Caveman Ninja is out. (It’s out since Dec. 1, I just completely forgot about it.)

Somewhat related to this thread…

in 2058 there's gonna be a “why were there so many zombie games??” thread

@phylaxis that’s no mystery though - zombies are a classic monster which, as popularly depicted in other media, are very single minded in pursuit of humans to eat, which makes them very easy to create convincing AI for. They’re also generally antagonists rather than protagonists so a “zombie game” usually has a normal human person as the star.

They’re also just popular in general, but making convincing enemies is what puts them over the top.

Cavemen on the other hand are just ugly old weirdos (unless they’re female in which case they are sexualized to the max), usually fighting dinosaurs or other things that didn’t exist during their timeline, and they’ve never appeared to be particularly popular except as the butt of a joke. Cavemen should be the antagonists if you ask me!

I’m pretty sure this is the reason there are so many caveman games.

@tomjonjon clicked on the bumped thread hoping to finally get some closure, thank you.

@tomjonjon This reminds me of the film Peking Man, which had a promotional tie-in version of the Tamagotchi, that is IMO one of the coolest ones. I have one, and it’s probably my second favorite Tamagotchi. I got all the secret characters on it.

Gotta love that progression:
the usual tama blobs -> monkey or ape -> caveman, mammoth, or … Haniwa -> alien, skeleton, or dogu

So if we define the westernized “Caveman Era” as blending post-paleolithic human prehistory with dinosaurs and fantasy, I would argue that similarly here the Genjin fantasy era, which may not always have dinosaurs, is still taking creative liberties. So here’s a couple more games:

As one may argue Chrono Trigger is the Cavemen’s Dragon Quest, I say that E.V.O. aka 4.6 Billion Year Monogatari is the Cavemen’s Dragon Quest

Anyone who has played this game to chapter 5 or whatever will know that you do become a Cave Man.

While on the subject of Haniwa and Dogu again,
Arceus Pokemon Legend may be considered a unique view of the ancient world of Pokemon, in a vaguely edo or heian-period setting, depending on whether you consider the vaguely Post-paleolithic Age of Japanese history known as the Jomon-period to be caveman-adjacent or not, Bushi Seiryuuden could be considered as caveman Pokemon. I haven’t beaten it yet, it may even have dinosaurs, but at first glance it would appear to be set in a post-paleolithic jomon-period type setting. Haniwa are fully present and accounted for. That’s enough for me!

I’ll admit this last one is definitely a stretch!!

That Tamagotchi made me wonder what other lower-tech caveman games there are. Turns out Tomy made an LCD caveman game in the early '80s!

@exodus

haha thank you for the education on this! i’ve just honestly been so tired of zombies for a while and never really looked into it, clearly. that easy-to-program bit is super obvious in retrospect

@phylaxis

my children, treefroggyjr and popeye will be asking on this forum in 20 years.

rip raquel welch, who i guess kicked off the sexy cavewoman trope
