I remember a 1UP article by Jeremy Parish from around ten years ago naming NSMBU the best 2D Mario. I’ve always been curious to play it and see why that might be, and now you and @Mnemogenic have me more curious. What distinguishes the level/game design of Luigi U exactly? (besides playing as Luigi)
I’ve never been in a grocery store playing music.
That sounds pretty nice. I worked for a decade in a drugstore that played the same songs every day for months at a time and it was ghastly.
i might be using the wrong word! but i mean that startup screen that has the ds logo + sound effect before it kicks into the main menu. unless this is just something my 3ds skips for some reason, it just goes directly into the menu

True contrarian opinion: people shouldn’t be loitering in the eshop.
It’s not a library Buy something or leave.
I treat the eshop like a real store. Go in with a list of exactly what I’m going to buy, grab it, get out as quickly as possible.
But the Wii shop I’d bring an attractive friend, stay, talk, have a coffee, maybe buy one of the overpriced pastries…
whoa?!?!?! my 3ds totally skips this!
Are you turning the console off, or just putting it to sleep?
Was this on original 3DS models only? Every 3DS I’ve owned always played that same music, but loaded right into the home screen. (Just tested again on my New 3DS XL, and I know it wasn’t there on my original 3DS XL.)
My non-contrarian pick for most corporate console would be any Xbox. Lots of tie-ins with Yum brands (Mt Dew, Doritos, etc), Microsoft’s efforts to buy up huge portions of the industry, and lots of ties to the military industrial complex. The 360 is probably the pinnacle.
Not to forgive Nintendo’s awful business practices going back to at least the FC/NES and their penchant for financially ruining a handful of individuals, but Microsoft is the definition of corporate behemoth.
All I have is the new 3ds XL too so I can’t test. I knew it has a boot up screen because every time it plays I’m like “UGH just take me to the damn MENU already!!!” And I start freaking out
I have a 3DS XL and a New 3DS XL and both had the bootup screen, but only if you turned the console off, not waking from sleep.
yeah i always turn it off! i have an original model 3ds and it just goes right into the menu
maybe it’s some firmware thing? this is very confusing
Does the 2DS / 2DS XL use the 3DS firmware? There’s no start-up sequence on my 2DS XL but I’m not sure if the firmware difference would matter
Like @humblepopstar, mine is off and don’t get it. I hit the power button then press the button to power off. Turn it back on and straight to menu. Maybe a regional difference?
since there’s some Wii discussion happening, here’s my Wii hot take:
despite the motion controls being marketed as (and, at least to some extent, culturally received as) the future of videogames, the Wii instead proved to be a swan song: the Last Great Living Room Console
and relatedly: Wii Sports is the greatest Atari 2600 game ever made
