The Switch 1 should have been the controller for the Wii U2 (featuring Bono and The Edge).
(Autocorrect changed “Bono” to “Bonk” and I almost left it that way.)

ds > 3ds because the former has a bootup screen whereas the 3ds just boots into the menu. we need console logo + sound cue bootups back.
actually, i don’t know if this is contrarian, but game systems should stop pretending to be computers with functional and invisible ui! either bring back goofy menu design or boot directly into a game at random!
Pounding my fists onto the table demanding that they put music back in the eShop
3ds does have a bootup screen, unless i am wildly misunderstanding what a boot up screen is
3DS (and Wii) has banners though! Those little bonus images and sounds. Especially when they made one-off 3D dioramas for otherwise mostly 2D games.
Oh yeah this rules
The Switch desperately need some personality via Wii style menu/shop music. But I’m guessing they opted to go quiet because it’s a portable console??? Like they don’t want people blasting Wii Shop music on the train? That’s my guess.
It is not a dating sim, but based on your description have you checked out the game “God Save the Queen?” It may intrigue you, though it is very obtuse and easy to die.
New Super Mario Bros U (especially luigi U) is waaaay better level design wise than Mario Wonder. Levels are more cohesive. And this isn’t even a nostalgic take. I first played New Mario U in 2021.
If there can be such a thing as a Mario hidden gem, it’s New U. Almost nobody seems to know how good that game is. Probably a top 3 Mario for me.
My controversial take is that Nintendo ditched the shop music because it’s annoying and sucks. I don’t want the shop to be cute, I want it to be plain and boring. I want real money transactions to be handled with SOME sense of seriosity, Nintendo is manipulative enough as it is, can we at least skip the dopamine feedback store interface?
I have not, and my searches are turning up a few other games using the phrase in some way, but nothing specifically titled God Save the Queen?
Nintendo has said they dropped the shop music so it didn’t feel incongruous with trailers, which are now expected in a shop.
I really wish Switch 2 would have that Wii/3DS/Wii U level of personality. Stuff like shop music, wii channels, street pass, mii plaza, were such fun. Instead now we have to pay $10 for the system instruction booklet.
Here’s my controversial opinion: The Wii shop music is the best tune Nintendo ever put out.
Also, the Switch was the moment that Nintendo sold out and became just another Sony/Microsoft.
The Wii is the most corpo console ever made, surely that was the sellout moment.
Whatever sellout even means for Nintendo. It’s fucking Nintendo, the biggest game company in the world.
It’s pretty clear what people mean when they talk about Nintendo selling out or changing or whatever and it’s definitely not the Wii. Iwata was still alive, they had all the skits, and they showed the vitality sensor at E3. They’re much more boring now.
With all due disrespect, the Wii was undoubtedly the moment Nintendo died for me.
What? The Wii absolutely defied industry “wisdom” and ditched the pursuit of graphical improvement in favor of a novel control gimmick. This is a console that had 480p output when HDTV was becoming a thing. It had bossanova beats in the shop.
Sure, it brought the virtual console and wii shop, but it was a big gamble after stumbling during the N64 and Gamecube eras, and had tons of personality. If anything, contemporary Sony and Microsoft were acting corpo as hell, attempting to mimic the Wii’s innovation with sixaxis/PSmove and Kinect.
Just out of curiosity, do you feel the same way about grocery stores playing top 40 hits?
Follow-up: What if it’s music written for the store, like the K-Mart music?
I will bet money that @kiki has never been in a K-Mart.
