Your contrarian video game opinions

  • Cinematic games are a waste
  • Zelda games weren’t truly great until A Link Between Worlds
  • DS > 3DS
  • Metroidvanias should be good, but they rarely are.

I kinda blacked out there when I wrote that. Which part?

This one’s pretty spicy and I don’t think I agree but I could be persuaded.

I quoted your whole post but Discourse didn’t like that.

  • What are cinematic games and why do you dislike them?
  • What did A Link Between Worlds do to Zelda to make it worthwhile? Have subsequent Zeldas learned from it or is it unique?
  • Why DS > 3DS?
  • What makes a good metroidvania?

I’ll concur the ds library on the whole is better than the 3ds library. But I can play all the ds games on the 3ds with the addition of other 3ds games, so 3ds reigns supreme for me.

But you can play the GBA library on the DS.

I’m definitely in the DS > 3DS camp, as none of the 3DS exclusives wound up on my list of favorite games, but plenty DS and GBA games did.

DS games look better it has a nice bright density vs 3DS where they got some air in those polygons looking a little puffy

I don’t really know what this means but I completely agree.

The dsi form factor is also unparalleled imo

I don’t know exactly what I mean but I think it’s right

The 3DS has a bigger screen which puts these black bars on DS games. DS all the way.

Puffy polygons and aspect ratios….

3dsians, is it over for us?

Much like a camera, the best DS is the one you have with you.

this is very true, but if you happen to have one of every model of DS with you then the DS lite is the best one ;)

Character action would like a word with you.

Gotcha! I’ll try to keep it short here, because I could type way too many words on each of these.

  • Cinematic games, like Naughty Dog games, are technically impressive, but everything else is constrained from trying anything new or fun.
  • Zelda: I find the dungeon design in the classic Zelda formula too frustrating. When I can’t find a solution to the puzzle I end up backtracking endlessly and forget the steps that I took to even get there in the first place so looking up the answer in a guide was a lot of work, too. The open worlds didn’t offer many interesting things either. They felt like tacked on connective tissue between the dungeons where the real work clearly went. ALBW was the first I had played where the open world encouraged and rewarded exploration in a way that was vital to the core path of the game. The hub-and-spoke design made it much easier for me to come back to center and restart my steps that got me to the place I was exploring, similar to how Souls game reinforce it until the map is burned into my brain.
  • DS > 3DS: The games felt more innovative and exploratory. There was a sense from 3rd party developers that they could use the little tricks and gimmicks of the system in an interesting way, whereas the 3D never really made an impact in games I played beyond a handful of 1st party titles. Also the DS Lite was my favorite Nintendo console design ever.
  • Similar to the Zelda dungeon issue, when I’m lost there’s no way to remember or know what I did to get to that point in the first place which also makes retracing your steps in a guide very difficult. I heard Prince of Persia has a notetaking mechanic that sounds interesting similar to one of the DS Zelda games that might make it better for me. I’d like to caveat this and say that I’m playing Metroid Prime Remastered currently and am keeping notes along the way so I don’t get as frustrated. It’s really encouraging me to explore more and enjoy the game, but I think folks that enjoy this stuff tend to have better recall and sense of direction than I possess.

but the way that DS Lite feels in your hands tho

Ignore, I saw one of your later comments about the DSi. I never owned a DSi, but I kinda wanna find one used now.

The Switch 2 should have been a new dual screen console
